What you blatantly neglect to emphasize is that in 2006, then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld wanted to terminate the C-17 immediately. He intended to do this as retribution to California, where the C-17 is built here in Long Beach, for never supporting George W. Bush for president. Instead, Rumsfeld wanted to renovate antiquated C-5 cargo planes where they are repaired by Lockheed Martin in Texas, the home state of Bush. Rumsfeld also wanted to ditch the C-17 to help pay for the overly costly misguided Iraq War. “Shock and awe” changed to “long, hard slog.”

Thanks to the late Representative Juanita Millender-McDonald, and Senators Feinstein and Boxer, the C-17 has contracts until August 2010. And to show my objectivity, I will even be grateful and thank Rep. Dana Rohrabacher for being a C-17 advocate and participating in its revival. I beg to differ on his incoherent ranting that somehow the recently-passed American Reinvestment Act has taken funding away from the C-17.

Secretary Gates’s budget plans call for major restructuring of defense funding priorities, including terminating the over-budget F-111, joint strike fighter. I only wish he included terminating the V-22 Osprey vertical aircraft, the so-called “Marine Killer.”

The C-17 is in good hands; it’s called the U.S. Congress. Congress has the final say on its funding and given that C-17 has major contracts in blue states Washington, CA, and Obama’s home state of Illinois, where Boeing is based in Chicago, the C-17’s fate is assured. Defense Appropriations Committee chair John Murtha (D-PA) is a C-17 supporter and the whitehouse.gov website also sings the C-17’s praises.

Your allegations that only Bush would be criticized by local media is unfounded, without merit, and misinformed.

In the end, what will be the consequence of Garcia’s election? Little or nothing. The city continues to face a $20 million deficit; the state faces an $8 billion deficit and $7 billion more if voters fail to approve budget propositions on May 19. JetBlue may vacate LBG for LAX with Alaska Air to follow. Port traffic is down 20% from last year and the national, state, and regional economies continue to stagnate. The Queen Mary rusts inexorably. LBUSD is again a finalist for the Broad Prize. Danica Patrick will race in the L.B. Grand Prix the weekend after next. And the beat goes on….

Granted Proposition 99 protects residential property owners from having their homes seized through eminent domain for non-public uses, provided the RDA pays fair market value as protected in Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution, blah, blah, blah, blah....

The real issue is that all the North Long Beach residences located in the Redevelopment project area should be taken out of the redevelopment area and regarded as residential areas of the city. The dirty secret is that the entire property tax assessments of those homes is money that exclusively goes to the RDA, to give us wonderful projects like the Downtown Plaza, the City West Gateway, and numerous landscaped street medians. All this property tax assessment is at the entire expense of where it would go otherwise: The LBUSD, the county, and the city general fund--police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and infrastructure.

Isn't redevelopment wonderful?

Dick Cheney is the exception of a running mate upstaging the presidential
candidate.

Otherwise, my point was to argue that Palin is a slam-dunk for Republican
victory. What worked in 1968 and 1988 will work again in 2008. McCain's
choice of Palin is a masterstroke. He consolidates the right-wing
evangelical base of the Republican Party that prior to Palin was elusive to
McCain. Look at how Mike Huckabee, Dr. James Dobson, Pat Buchanan, and
Richard Viguerie are effusive over Palin; prior to that they didn't trust
McCain.

Palin as running mate makes evangelical turnout key for McCain's victory,
particularly the swing states of OH, VA, and CO--states that were key in the
George W. Bush/Karl Rove strategy of 2004.

Hey, I'm a liberal Democrat, but I'm always happy to state the facts. I
have no axe to grind.

Sarah Palin is a slam-dunk victory for the Republican ticket. The Republicans are once again practicing their winning 20-year itch strategy: Choose a running mate that allows the president to upstage his running mate. Twenty years ago, George H.W. Bush chose the incompetent Dan Quayle to battle long-time veteran Lloyd Bentsen. Twenty years prior to that Nixon chose the ineffective Spiro Agnew to battle against a whale of a Senator, Edmund Muskie of Maine. Now neophyte Sarah Palin will debate long-time Senator Joe Biden, a former chair of both the Senate Foreign Affairs and Judiciary Committee. Hey, I'm a liberal Democrat! Who am I to argue with the Republicans' strategy of nothing succeeding like incompetence?
