Anything is better with bacon. I'd still be tempted to throw a bunch of onions in there...

Re: Simple (and frugal!) homemade hot chocolate

As much as I would love to claim credit for this particular post, it was written by my beloved step-mother, Valerie. She has written several posts at Foodie With Family and this is a gem from her.

I also have to put in a good word for this cocoa. Over the years, I've been happy to receive several canisters of this in my stockings. It's good. No, it's great! And may I recommend topping it with homemade marshmallows?

Re: Apple Cider and Beer Braised Pot Roast: Pure Fall

Cygnus25- I'm so glad you liked it and are making it again. It's a frequent visitor on our table!

Re: More on comfort foods

Gloria- I'm glad you enjoyed my braised meat post. Food is a such an easy connection between people. I vote for more food posts from you :-)

Re: Butter Beer. And might I recommend trying it whilst reading Harry Potter? For the full experience, you know...

Re: Butter Beer. Does that come with a recommendation?

And as for finding schnapps in Koln, I think you should be able to lay your hands on some without too much difficulty. As I remember, Germans have some pretty extensive choices in liqueur and liquor available :-)

Re: Pumpkin Pots de Créme, served three ways

Pianogal- Shucks! Thank you. And I can personally attest to the appeal of the blow-torch to young boys. All five of my sons stood around me thrilled while I torched those brulees. I thought a fist fight might break out over who got to have the first one.

As for feeling guilt, I'm too overstuffed to feel an ounce of it. You'll just have to make some! (I might recommend NOT eating them prior to a singing engagement, though ;-)

And driving all the way to CMU with a tray full of Pumpkin Squares? You're a good mom. If those travelled in a car with me I'm not sure they'd get to the destination. You don't feel like sharing that recipe, do you??? I'm always looking for more pumpkin recipes.

Re: Cranberry Upside Down Cake has vibrant flavor and color

Let me know if you try it Kierstin. It's some pretty good stuff!

Re: Papa's Homemade Hooch: Easy homemade ginger ale

Marie- It is more fun than I can possibly explain. There's just something about edible science that really dings my chimes!

Bob- I use SAF-Instant yeast, but I have also used Fleischmann's Instant Dry Yeast as well as active dry yeast (the packet-in-the-refrigerated-section-of-the-store variety) with great results. I really am not sure that I found any discernable difference in end-result, either in quality of flavor or in concentration of carbonation. I'd try it with two varieties with the kids so you could compare-and-contrast. More science! (Er, is THAT what you meant about detailing the yeast?)

Re: If a sloppy joe and a taco were to marry and have a baby…

Thanks for the kind praise, Roger... Crusty roll, small wedge of cheese, good mustard, an orange or some grapes and a glass of water. That's good stuff.

Re: Inside a foodie's vacation suitcase: What would YOU pack?

I'm with you, religious statues... If you go to my website, you can see all my boys lined up at the counter cutting the dough. It was an awesome project. Cooking offers such immediate gratification for work that it's great to do with kids!

Re: I dare you to tell me these honey caramel and coconut candy bars aren't better than any you've ever bought

Abigail- The nice thing about this recipe is that it's pretty forgiving. The proportions I used are as given in the recipe. I buy my unsweetened coconut in bulk, so I just measure out 12 ounces into my bowl. And I buy my dark chocolate in 12 ounce bags as well, but I use 4 ounces from a second bag to make it 16 ounces.

Please let me know how it turns out for you. We love these around here!

Re: Here's what I think about that

I agree about the dogs. I have one who tips the scales at 45 lbs and another who breaks the scales around 90 lbs. Them's dawgs.

...And for your consideration I present the also woefully underused interjections, 'phooey', 'flummery', and 'colsarnit'.

Re: New Comment System

I like having the newest comments at the bottom.
