I agree with Emily that the "Chile helping Chile" motto doesn't bother me that much... perhaps it's because Mexicans are known for not being very solidary among themselves. A slogan like this would actually be a good thing, we're not very strong at promoting fraternity as you can imagine.....

However, it DID hit me how isolated Chile (Santiago and Valparaiso) felt when we visited last year. Granted we were only there for a week, but I did feel that this was an "enclosed" community. People stared at us the entire time, me probably for being blond, Andre probably for being so tall and it reminded me a lot of how we felt in Japan, another highly known isolated culture. I'm not saying Chile is completely shut off from the world, but when you compare to other countries that are more exposed to diversity in culture, language or because of pure geographic proximity you can tell the difference.

However, I'm probably very biased after all this time, after all, cultural diversity IS the norm here (I'll always remember how some mexican friends who came to Paris for the first time mentioned this was the very first time they were actually seeing asians, blacks and indians and were surprised to learn these communities lived in France!!)

Girl, you know I love you to death and you know that I feel EXACTLY the same way about the Wold Cup and Futbol in general, word for word. I am living the same conflict here in France. You can't fight against your patria and with every fiber of my body I'll root for Mexico against France tonight (to Hubby's utter horror - you got the only Chilean who doesn't like futbol, I got the only Parisian who does!!), or any other country, even the US (sorry hon). I honestly believe that this World Cup could turn into a toss up at this point: barring Germany, none of the "favorites" have been convincing so far, so maybe this will be the year that an outsider will make it to the top....

The beauty of the game is the way it makes the world stop, because it does stop, I've felt it, while that little ball is bouncing around the field.

OMG these are absolutely stunning... Emily's dress is gorgeous and they both look amazing. Am loving all the pictures - too hard to pic one fave but the traffic light one is right up there on the list... Am so so so so happy for them!!

SO GLAD you guys are okay and safe. Earthquakes are the scariest things out there (I should know, Puebla had a big on in 99 that still sends shivers down my back when I remember how it feels to have the ground shake beneath your feet!!)... Stay safe and hope things get back to normal as soon as possible.

Clothes, clothes and more clothes... (how shallow am I?).... and I'm definitely with you on the treadmill.... it's something I'd love to have one day, although being as our place is so small, we'd probably have to place it in the middle of our living room... don't think that would fly with hubby.

On Christmas, the thing I like the very, toppest most (even more than the eventuality of presents) is the general atmosphere... I love the frenzy last minute shopping and the bundling up for the cold, the sparkling of the lights and the creativeness of the Christmas dinner, I love the coziness of waking up on a clear late December morning to a cup of hot tea and gathering around the fireplace in your pj's and warm socks and knowing you don't have to go to work that day. Priceless!!!!

Loved, Loved, Loved these posts!!! I am soooooooo aware when it comes to clothes too; usually I remember very clearly what people wear, when they wear it, how they wear it, what I am wearing..... Even though I'm no fashionista (black, grey, white, jeans is my motto) I do agree that the clothes we wear in those monumental moments of our lives become an invariable part of the memory of those events.

Ooh wedding post!! I love wedding posts!!!

As I might have mentioned to ya when you guys were here, our wedding was a small and pretty laid back event. We paid for everything ourselves and this allowed us to keep it small (and affordable) and to have it OUR way since it was us who were footing the bill. At the beginning my PIL took it badly (Hubby is an only child and they'd been looking forward to "running" the event) but I kept my stand and eventually they realized they either got with the program (ours) or they would miss out on the event all together. Eventually they came around and in the end they even ended up helping us put the finishing touches on all the organization stuff.

We had a small party (80 people, meaning 40 invites + dates) but really nice if I do say so myself ;)

Because we didn't go with the conventional traditions of a French, American or even Mexican wedding, but instead we just took what we liked of each and mished mashed it into a party that matched our personality, all of our friends and family told us it felt like a very personal and unique event.

I totally agree with what you say... the wedding is all about the bride and the groom. Let them be the deciders of how they want their special day to turn out and that's exactly what it will be!!

As much as I agree with the fact that the American mentality on charity and the Chilean (or in my case Mexican) mentality on charity are very different, I think there is another factor that heavily weighs in the equation: Corruption.

When I was living in Mexico, I never really considered giving money to charity (not that I had much to give anyway) simply because I could never really be sure of where that money was going to go. When you work really hard for your money and you give away a chunk of it thinking that you're doing it for the right reasons and then you discover that in reality that money went somewhere else (someone's pockets mainly) you simply get to a point where just don't feel very philanthropic anymore.

I do remember doing a lot of volunteer work in college and during the whole Chiapas guerrilla era but even then, sometimes you ended up with a very unpleasant surprise. I remember one time my friends and I put together a whole truck of donated food and goods to send to another state that had just been hit by a major earthquake and weeks later we were informed that the person that had coordinated the whole thing actually was in cahoots with the local political party in the area and they were actually SELLING the stuff we'd sent to the people in the devastated area! All of us were disgusted and a lot of my friends never wanted to help out again after that.

Awesome pics K! They look soooooo professional (then again, they ARE!!) and Marissa looks absolutely gorgeous! I can sympathize with the "waiting 10 mins till you get your shot" thing... Hubby is just the same way.. he HATES getting people in his shots when he thinks it'll "spoil the mood"... :)
