Calm down everyone, haha. I would put myself into the "super dad" camp, though I'm a 34 year old lady. I like to go fast, I've been known to rock the chamois. I wasn't at all offended by the story, it makes perfect sense to me. Here's my take:

People commuting by bike are such a small proportion of the population that — whether we like it or not — every person is implicitly an ambassador for cycling. When you're on the bike, you're extremely visible to every other member of your community. So, if you're goal as a cyclist is simply getting a workout and getting to-and-fro quickly, carry on as you were.

However, if, as a cyclist, you want to model behavior that captures the imagination of pedestrians and drivers around you, and thus influence them to consider cycling themselves, then you need to shed the chamois. If you're looking cute, wearing everyday work clothes, casually cycling an upright bike to the office, you are much more likely to subconsciously influence someone to consider cycling. When we're all sprinting around downtown in our spandex kits, it's much easier for "othering" to occur — pedestrians and drivers won't see themselves in you.

Make sense? Maybe some strong language in the piece, but no need to get offended. Shhhhh... we're all cyclists, we gotta stay together guys, or we'll never fix this thing.

Re: Towards A Slower, Simpler, More Civilized Bicycle Culture

What does "MEC" mean? Matt Bernier's site is REALLY good as far as general comics process is concerned:

http://comictool.blogspot.com

You should also read Alec Longstreth's "Your Comics Will Love you Back" — it's SO good, 24 pages of gold. He's posted it online here:

http://www.alec-longstreth....

Good luck! :)

Re: Fixpert Comics - Auto-Bio Bike Comics by Sally Carson - Website Login

Hey A.J.! I'm glad this post was helpful for you. Good luck tabling at your first con, just try to have fun, and table with a buddy or two. Don't take it too serious.

If you want more process posts, that's basically what this whole blog is, so cruise around a bit, click on "Process Blog" in the upper right hand navigation. I get really deep into the creation of The Skids here on this site.

The mini's are I think around 16 pages, one is 8.5" x 7" for $3, the other is a weird format 8.5" x 3"or something like that. I charge mostly based on how old they are. If the mini is less than a year old I'll charge $3-5, and then take off $1 per each year it ages. I really want to sell minis from 3 years ago to get rid of them, so I only charge a buck.

Most of them were printed on a Xerox machine in the basement of the Center for Cartoon Studies, then folded and stapled myself.

Hope that helps!

Re: Fixpert Comics - Auto-Bio Bike Comics by Sally Carson - Website Login

It's more like how _doesn't_ the crotch research affect my decision making. I guess I now just look at the world through Terminator's eyes, with a bunch of rainbow hot-spots on everyone's crotches and I think "this is what dudes see."

Re: Fixpert Comics - Auto-Bio Bike Comics by Sally Carson - Website Login

Cool Robert! I asked her why and she said that the work turned out to be kind of boring — the vast majority of patients were coming in with lower back issues, caused my tight hamstrings because they sit at desks all day. Those patients would be told to take frequent breaks, stand up and stretch, walk around, and do hamstring stretches.

Re: A standing desk for $22

Shhhhhhh.....

No, just shhhh.

Re: A standing desk for $22

Here's my cheap standing desk set up:

http://instagr.am/p/MGbkP2r...

I think it cost me $40. I like the colors too. I just stood next to my existing desk, raised my hands until my forearms were parallel to the floor, then measured the distance. Then I just spent a couple weeks looking around shops until I found some boxy objects about that height. I slapped another desk surface that I already had on top. Bam! I used to put my laptop on an empty Sierra Nevada case. Just do what's cheap, no need to spend $1k.

Re: Fixpert Comics - Auto-Bio Bike Comics by Sally Carson - Comics - The Skids #1 Debuts at CAKE this Weekend!

Thanks Pat!!

Re: Fixpert Comics - Auto-Bio Bike Comics by Sally Carson - Comics - The Skids #1 Debuts at CAKE this Weekend!

Thanks Jake!
