ps, they weren't advertising they are gay, they JUST are, exactly like you are not. You walk into a store with your fiancee on your arm with a ring wanting a photographer they did the same thing.

Tell me exactly where the "expression of art" stops? The cake that is made for the same sex marriage? perhaps the printer of the cards? The maker of the rings? The dress shop? The shoe shop? The place they buy their underwear? The people that create the streets they walk on or homes they live in?

They picked a JOB ITS A JOB A SERVICE. If they want to express their "art" let them put up the pictures they take that they make the people sign as property of the photographer, then put them up on a big giant bill board with a circle and a line across their faces!

Sorry, art isn't being "squelched" here.

If we didn't use the state, we would have slavery still. Slavery would still pass on a popular vote in some portions of the USA.

An extremely white response if I have ever one. Once your whole being is being threatened just because you are different than someone else, once you have the very law saying you are a second class citizen, or no citizenship what so ever, once you know what its like to have a history of less opportunity because of who you are, once you have the majority saying what you can do how you can do it and make it law then come back to me. You are a white woman, less than a white man, but you are privileged. Once we understand who has the privileges and who doesn't and we have true equality amongst all peoples opportunities in life, we will be a true human race that is good. Untill then we will fight and not back down to those who are bigoted, full of power and greed. I am a straight, white woman who has had one husband, and two children and I know how privileged my hard working road to the top of mediocre middle class, struggle for the bills and health care and food for the table I am.

The objectionable portion of all of this is the fact that you mix the idea of moral and faith as one.

The business of determining what is moral is not for the photographer to do. It is discrimination if they refuse to do the job because they are different than they are.

obviously you have never been discriminated against. This is not about if you want to deal with someone or somthing, this is about law. You would not be allowed to do this if they were black and you didn't want to serve them. There is no difference.

One can not turn down someone of a different race. One can not turn down anyone that is different they are and are not accepted because of it. Should we have different water fountains for gays?

If you are turning down a wedding because you do not want to tell the story of a same sex wedding because it goes against your religious beliefs. Then you also are going to turn down a Muslim wedding, a Buddhist wedding, a Wiccan or Jewish wedding on and on...... You will have to ask if the person in the wedding had sex before marriage, If one of them had an Abortion in their lives, have them write and sign a contract saying that they will not divorce or have an affair. Will you them if they commit adultery? or ask for your money back if they have a pregnancy they stop? or use birth control?

Perhaps we should put out signs over shops saying we do not serve Gays here? or have seperate bathrooms or water fountains while we are it make them sit in the back of the bus.

Reading this review, or perhaps its just a long list of thoughts on what is fringe, I come up with two word to review this review. Subjectivity & Contradiction. The words of "Brand" is thrown about with the connection to success and perhaps the idea that if one has a "brand" they get into a fair, nice and
nonjuried somehow because of their brand. Here is what lies in that... The Brand's alluded on were made in huge part because of the fringe, which leads into the thoughts on art that is made popular because of and out of the fringe such as TLA (only stating this production because it was called out on in the article) and critized because they continue to produce alike art each time, this thought is contradictory and subjective mostly because.... would anyone who is seeing a ballet dancer think they might break out in stand up comedy just because they have last been seen doing exactly what their art entails which is dance? Audience is made of both returning and new members, the ones returning are the ones that make the decisions on seeing an art form that they have once seen, is it the artists fault if they are bored because they have already seen the art form?

Fringe is nonjuried here because of history of what is fringe, which is to be non censored and keep what will be contradictory to my own words here and the very core of all what art is, fringe or not fringe, which is subjective. Not because of anything Minnesota Nice. The part I will give credit to, in regards to Minnesota Nice and the Fringe (at least in our community in MPLS) is actually in the alluded idea that an artist can some how always get into the nonjurried fringe even if their ping pong ball isn't picked. After following the art scene now for almost its entire history here in Minneapolis, I have seen how the culture and community of artists work on and which each other, sometimes to their own detriments, in either being outshined by brand names but at the same time, have been lifted into their sort of brand and self indentity because that brand helped pull in some returning fans of the brand in question.

TLA is certainly not the only example of a group that has been made to shine and given its local spring board for success, as I have mentioned in earlier in the success it has made for local artists. In light I would say some extraordinary production groups might have even chosen NOT to participate, as to not want to be known as a sort of art medium but of a more ranging art form? I have tons of questions leading out of this article that I believe that were not faced on in thought, such as the comments on commercialism and art and success and the use of the word brand. Is art, if it becomes successful because it has a fan base commercial? Is it a "Brand" because an artist has a certain medium they use? It is "nice" because its nonjuried? I think the answers all lie within the subjective and in the history of what is Fringe. Which is a festival to express without censorship and in hopes to get a response. For if it was all in the success of most ticket sales than some of the most active artists in the fringe would not participate as often or as much in any given festival. Ask anyone of the artists that often do 1-half a dozen or more shows all in one festival! The biggest factor is reporting, the papers need to gauge the success on something, the artists do need to make a living, and the festival needs to be able to fund itself to produce for the next year.......

This all said and done, I hope the new reign of power of the fringe continues to keep the core nonjuried and "nice" effect in the future, To continue what is known as venue to learn, shine and have artists sit in an audience one year and say I can do that! Then do it the next year, to have opportunities to help and guide new and non experienced festival fringe artists shine. there is always room for improvement. All of it will be contradictory and subjective, as is my own opinion.

I almost agree with all your ideas, i dont agree with the ten best shows get thrown in first. I say if they are all local shows then they all put on a fringy encore midseason just for the locals, and to keep up fringe buz all year. There is always such hype about who can get enough of their friends from the biz to the shows, and the out of towners always get less of a good deal that way.

I also don't agree with your total dislike of the Big G, I think its the responsibility of the Big G to promote all theater, and frankly the pull of the Big G gives this town an up on the theater place we have here in minneapolis. We need them, they need the talent of the talent that is in this town.

I soooo wish for the Fringe trolley.

I also was irked about the 10pm spot for fun stuff after the shows. Couldn't Bedlam have kept their full kitchen open? That also irked me.

Yes on merch! I agree people will only buy merch right after or right before a show they are going to see. Have a policy that says that owners, producers, talent inside the show can not wear merch before day of show starts type thing.

Git a rope and for christ sake drop the line one line two thing, have credit card here/will call passes here signs!

I will refrain from all the personal dislikes I have on her. I will not buy the trib as long as she is writing for it. that says more than me being as loud or annoying as she is. I did spend real money though at all three kushner plays and that again speaks louder.
