Re: Twitter Begins Attaching Locations to Tweets

I am not sure I like this feature. I do not know if your solution - philantropism, will truly be the solution. How will this work in journalism? How will we make sure that there will still be independent journalism? After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. I wonder what freelance photographers within my network will make of it. I do think this is a terrible development. In the Netherlands, rumours circulate that certain huge agencies only pay € 10 per photo for it to be published in a newspaper. It's evident that this is grotesque - no photographer can make a living under these conditions.

I notice a tendency for requests to text journalists to be supply not only text but photography as well. With digital photography, everyone feels anyone can make a great photograph. When you compare amateur shots to those of professional photographers, the difference is clear, though.

Re: Psychologist: Facebook Makes You Smarter, Twitter Makes You Dumber

Interesting article. However, I wonder on what basis the effects of the use of Twitter have been analyzed. After all, Twitter can be used in many ways. For me - and many, many others - Twitter is used, amongst other things, to share links to articles like this one, and to discuss the contents of those articles. In fact, when I posted a link to this article on Twitter, a fellow-user of Twitter immediately pointed out this fact in his reply to me.

In other words, to many users such as myself, Twitter is not just a tool to send out information into the world. It's all about sharing. It's all about dialogue. That's exactly what makes it so great.

Re: Twitter Plans to Mangle ReTweets #SaveReTweets

I don't think I will lie awake over this. Nevertheless, if it's true, then it would seem that Twitter doesn't understand a thing about Twitter...

Actually, I seldom RT without editing. I often add a comment of my own. I plan to keep on doing this, no matter what Twitter prescribes :-) A RT from someone I don't know, without the clearly visible credentials of a person I do follow, is meaningless.

Re: RSS: interesting or boring? It makes me think that rss-feeds aren't even mainstream yet. I use my Netvibes page to glance through feeds quickly. I find that a huge improvement compared to newsletters and newsfeeds in my mailbox. I have a separate tab for every subject I am interested in. It works well for me.

That having been said, I have to admit that I don't look at my Netvibes page as often as I used to. Twitter has partially replaced it. However, I find Twitter and other social networks a little time-consuming right now, so I am looking at ways to use these tools more effectively.

Re: The 22 Step Social Media Marketing Plan

That's a great list. I don't think it is essential to do ALL of these things, though. The Psychology Behind Tweeting!

For me, the most important reason to try Twitter was self-education. As a communications consultant I should try things myself before I advise them to my clients. I have been on Twitter for almost a year now, and my experience has been a positive one. Apart from the learning experience, I have found interesting people, learnt a lot through insights on Twitter and through links to postings I would never have found otherwise. And? And it has given me entertainment, diversion, a good laugh now and then. As far as I'm concerned, twitter is here to stay.

Truthfully, in Maslow terms, for me Twitter is belonging, esteem and self-actualization. Especially the latter, since for me Twitter is all about education and development. At the same time, Twitter is only one of the many tools at your disposal if you wish to interact with people - be it socially or professionally. Let's not over-analyze it... a year from now, Twitter will not be a hype anymore, it will just be out there for you to use to your heart's delight. Just like so many other tools. In the end, it's all about sharing, communications.

Re: How I Manage Facebook

In The Netherlands, the Dutch social network Hyves (I know, it's a very odd name) www.hyves.nl is much more populair than Facebook. Recently people here have begun to discover Facebook. I have been on Facebook for about a year now, but it only starts to get interesting for me now that my friends are joining Facebook too.

I agree that Facebook is most suitable for friendships and to a lesser extent for business.

Re: Twitter for Beginners: 5 Steps for Better Tweeting

Great posting. I occasionally recommend people on #followfriday, when I feel like it. I have no set of rules in my mind as to whether I will recommend people or not, other than the fact that I enjoy someone's tweets myself (funny, interesting or otherwise worthwhile).

Re: Why Teens Don’t Tweet

My thought was that it all depends on who the early adapters are. In the case of Twitter it's certainly not teenagers. Therefore Twitter is for old people.

My teenage son contradicted me, though. According to him, it has to do with the Twitter question 'What are you doing?' My son believes that this question leads to people telling about what they are doing rather than to engage in a two-way conversation. In other words: Twitterazi mainly want to broadcast themselves and draw attention to themselves. His conclusion: Twitter is not the ideal tool for conversation, the way MSN is.

Re: A Brief and Informal Twitter Etiquette Guide

I agree with your ideas. I would suggest to include the rule Ronda Levine wrote in her comment to this post: Don't post anything that you wouldn't want your children, mother, boss, or client to read'. I think a lot of people are unaware at first that everything they post may turn up in their Google results.

Re: When Do You Use Twitter Versus Facebook?

My use of Facebook and Twitter is a bit similar to the way you use them. I use Facebook and the Dutch social network Hyves to connect with friends I know IRL. Facebook and Hyves offer me the opportunity to stay in touch with them. I use LinkedIn mainly for professional purposes. Twitter is positioned in between Facebook and LinkedIn. Although I do connect on Twitter with friends, I do follow follow a lot of people - like yourself - whom I don't know IRL. My purpose on Twitter is to learn things from other people and to share my own expertise. I do add more personal tweets, as I believe that this makes my tweets more interesting. And after all, I am a whole person and not just a professional.

Re: Twitter Corrects Follower Counts: How Many Followers Did You Lose?

I think it's a good thing to be rid of spam-followers. I lost about 60, even though I have been blocking spam followers myself continuously. As this article http://bit.ly/TuteW indicates, the relevance of your followers is much more important than their quantity.

I do wonder, however, if Twitter can't find a cure for the often disgusting spam following you get - in the beginning of the process that is, rather than to carry out a periodical sweep.

Morover, I have heard of several cases where people have lost legitimate followers. In one case, only the people the tweep had added in the past two days had remained. In other words: the sweep may not have been completely accurate.

Re: What Type of Social Media User Are You?

According to the survey, I am your typicial 'business user'. I don't spend my money lightly. So far, I haven't come across any updates from anyone that I would be prepared to spend money on. Frankly, my experience with the internet - including social communities - so far has been that all information was available for free. That will be a very difficult - if not impossible - habit to break. As far as I can tell, the added value is too little for me to want to invest any money.

Re: Last.fm, de gratis alternatieven.

Da's jammer, want voorkeuren handmatig opbouwen kost erg veel tijd.
