Yes, they are large, but not that difficult to understand when working with a team of professionals. The use of the colloquialism "doing an end run" in the first paragraph is a sign of several things. One, the "reporter" (I use that term loosely on this site) can not explain what transpired in simple black and white terms. Yes, after the use of "end run" the article does describe what happend to some degree, but clearly assumes something wrong has been done, without providing and deeper comment from experts in how the city government works. Yes, we have calls out, but lets rush to print.

Re: Liberal Consultant Does Mailing for Right-Wing Candidate

My THE END comment was in reference to what I know of DC culture, not out here.

Re: Why Does McGinn’s Potential Rail Plan Look So… Familiar?

What was the proposed alignment of the monorail from 15th to downtown, and what is it under McGinn's plan?

Re: Why Does McGinn’s Potential Rail Plan Look So… Familiar?

Sort of but streets is supposed to create support that pressures people to create funding.

Re: Liberal Consultant Does Mailing for Right-Wing Candidate

Actually, you are wrong. Political Consultants are usually tightly bound with one party. I don't know about out here. But in DC, if a firm aligned with D cantidates and issues did some work for an R, that would be the end of them, and their work would dry up, overnight. In fact it need not be a massive study, his work could stand alone, if he understood its short comings and presented those with the findings. He just keeps digging a hole. Rather than attach the appropraite qualifiers, he comes up with weird defenses like, we could not afford to do the work anyway, and its not like we could use a nuke where a tack hammer is required, so we used a stapler instead.

P.S. A straight forward question, even if its a "very" straight foward question, is a pretty weak indicator. It is not without value, and can be useful, but John does not seem to understand it.

Re: They Were Asked Very Straightforward Questions

"It is not a 30,000-person survey,.." Gawd every time I read an excuse from these Winpower political consultants I wince. They clearly do not understand public opinion research, and their shallow self serving defense not only says they don't give a sh*t about real public opinion, but that they are trying to shape public opinion.

Don't be mistaken, this is not a push poll. Its just sloppy work designed to produce a predetermined result, and give their clients an opportunity to say the numbers are with them. Their work would not survive the scrutiny of a intro to social research class for a pimple faced undergrad frosh. That they continue to produce and defend such work as actually measuring public support or opposition of anything indicts them thoroughly as muckraking hacks.

FWIW - THERE IS NO WAY TO CONDUCT A 30,000 Person Survey and have it mean anything in the context of city wide election. Work of this size usually represents a seminal study, and is typically funded by someone like the Carnegie Foundation and part of a very serious body of research conducted by TEAMS of academics, professionals and actuarials using a method produced after weeks and hours of discussion and vetting. In the end, it would serve as a benchmark designed to aid a great many things. That a political consultant uses the fact that he is not undertaking a survey of that size to distance himself from the quality of his work speaks volumes about what his motives really are.

I recall on their website they went so far as to admit they did not have proper resources to conduct good work, but their client deserved credit for trying to measure public opinion because they are cash strapped.

From their Winpower Blog

"I know how tough it is for non-profits to raise money in this climate so it’s great to see the fundraising work done to get it into the field. If anyone wants to learn more on these topics, we’d be happy to work with you to put another poll in the field. Just make checks payable to.."

Thats a cheap trick, and thats not how it works. There is way to do work on a small budget, but when doing this kid of work its imperative for the researcher to point out the short comings of their own method, for example if only three questions cover one subject, its incumbent upon the researcher to point out that their findings while perhaps reliable are actually pretty mushy, and should not be considered firm, or accurate. Lastly, if you are going to so quickly acknowledge the short comings of your findings as teaser to find someone who will fund the proper work... well thats says more about you as a researcher than your findings.

F-

Re: Coming Soon: Lots of New Transportation Taxes

--!!
