Great film and good review. I do think you missed out on a small but in my opinion, very important detail. She doesn't just run away with the $700,000. She takes it after her husband slaps her hard. Now, this could be just some bullshit, but I would like to think that there was something -- some trauma --in Bridget's past that made her react in the way she did. Moral of the story? Don't slap women around.

Good point. Right now, I blocked someone on Facebook because she posted what I consider a mischaracterization of an interaction I had a with a woman on the Multiply group.

There's a difference between allowing resentment to fester and not allowing false hoods and character assassination to proliferate.

That's an interesting thing for a doctor to say considering there's a plethora of studies on mediation and pain management dating back to the last 20 years.

today, Slick Willie tried to pass around the Kool Aid that his policies didn't have an impact on mass incarceration. Nothing could be further from the truth.

1994 Crime Bill, the largest and most sweeping crime legislation
ever passed, authorized $12.5 billion for states that adopted
“truth-in-sentencing” laws, which stipulate an offender must serve at
least 85% of their lengthy sentences.

After the bill was enacted, 24 states passed such laws. As one example,
New York received more than $216 million, and by 2000, the state had
added more than 12,000 prison beds, incarcerating 28% more of its
citizens than a decade before."

The New York example was the NORM not the exception. States throughout
the nation increased their prison population as a result of the
incentives in Clinton's crime bill. The extra cops he put on the streets
began stopping and frisking, planting evidence, shooting Blacks and Latinx without consequence, and
abusing their federally mandated authority. That bill was once of the
most racist, pernicious, most racist bills ever passed.

PLEASE don't let him get away with this racist nonsense.

What helps me is if I change that question to, "What can We do." The empty lot is also a metaphor -- there are many emoty spaces throughout the American landscape. Whether it's inequality or even apathy or cynicism, there's an essential emptiness to our lives these days. That's where it starts. At east for me it does.

I had a lot of help, but it was one hell of a road. And white racism is prevalent throughout the system from arrest to indictment to trail to incarceration -- the whole construct of justice is one heaping mass of racism at an individual and institutional level.

I just finished this book and found enjoyable (in a serious way), educational, and thought-provoking. I especially like how the author was able to articulate the symbiotic relationship between the cartels and the hunger for drugs on the part of the US population. He clearly did his homework, as he does for all of his books. If you want to be entertained and educated at the same time, this would be a fine reading. My only criticism is that I think he spent almost 100 pages too much on the depressing aspects of the war on drugs. I think he could have done it with half of those pages. I have read almost all of Winslow's works, BTW.

The same here and I work in the criminal justice reform arena. I think this comes from people's experiences and how they shape their perspectives. Let's face it, for many people, the police are seen as a fair and benevolent social institution. For Blacks and Latin@s this is most often not true at all -- the police being perceived (with good reason) as at best indifferent, at worst as an occupying force.
