Not only do they have a great selection of movies ranging from independent films to classics (they won me over by showing the “Princess Bride”), but the atmosphere is unbeatable. Forget the soullessness of $10 popcorn and five M&Ms in a giant box – Red River makes you feel like you’re money is going to a worthwhile cause (because it is) – Red River is a non-profit organization. One of my favorite things is ordering a glass of wine or beer to go along with my snack – it makes me feel like I’m at home, only better.

Re: Thousand Crane

Thousand Crane is by far my favorite Chinese food restaurant (they also have an extensive Japanese and sushi menu). The food is always delicious and you really can’t argue with the price. The lunch special in particular is a fabulous deal. This is the kind of Chinese food that doesn’t leave you feeling like you ate a plate of grease – it’s flavorful, fresh, always cooked well and my favorite thing to have in the fridge for a late night snack. It’s right downtown on Elm St. and easily accessible if you’re taking a stroll or parked nearby.

Re: Jewell & the Beanstalk

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve left Jewell and the Beanstalk rubbing my stomach and swearing that I will “never eat that many pancakes/eggs/muffins/waffles again.” This is the Sunday brunch tradition – wake up, think about cooking at home, grab the keys ten minutes later and head to the Beanstalk. The menu is huge, the kitchen is full of fresh and often local foods and the specials board regularly tempts me with the devilishly delicious pancake (or waffle) selection du jour. They serve lunch as well, but I have a profound weakness for breakfast at any hour, so I have yet to even get to that part of the menu. This little café is homey and friendly and well worth a smallish trek off the main Manchester roads.

Re: Z Food & Drink

Having lived, worked (and played) in Manchester for a while now, it’s nice to see some really great places popping up, especially along Elm St. Z Food & Drink brings a touch of upscale to town without succumbing to a stuffy atmosphere or snobbery. This restaurant is inviting, fun and boasts delicious food and excellent service. My boyfriend and I recently had a great all around dining experience at Z. I noticed on the bottom of the menu that vegetarian dishes were available upon request. When I asked, I was told to name a style of food or particular ingredient I liked (and if there was anything I didn’t like or was allergic to) and the chef would whip something up. My boyfriend and I each racked our brains for our favorites (he said something spicy with tofu – I said something with mushrooms and asparagus) and waited to see what would arrive. This added a little pzazz and adventure to a night out. I highly recommend Z to anyone, meat lovers and vegetarians alike.
