Alternative to 24 - 105 L is 24 - 70 L. With 2.8 it does cost more.
I am more interested in LT Reliability of lenses.
My 10 year old 24 - 105 L v. 1 now has aperture sticking problem and is a $350 Canon repair.
DXO makes a lot of comparisons on lenses but never address Reliably or Build Quality.
This would be a valuable input to any photographer.

ER was quick by ambulance and diagnostic but it took 8 hours to get into surgery for a ruptured appendix.
Hospital was clean and nurses nice but that won’t matter if you die getting to surgery.

Sharpness
Resolution
Curvature
Auto Focus Speed
Contrast

All these can be Qualified and Quantified.
They should be in all reviews ..

Phase Shift technology is used in photo lithography.
We manufactured various Photomask reticles with
mild to extreme shifting for semiconductor microelectronics.
I would like to see more in post process than in camera.

Chuck,
Canon shutters have been rated since the 30D with an "expected liftime" of exposures.
What is the basis for these ratings and now higher use ratings ?
Is Hardware, Software, and oil used really that different ?
What is expected life range for products before 30D {10D, 20D, 5D etc} ?

Thanks for answer on AF lens speeds.
Yes it is a bear with all the varibles but would still like to see some benchmarks incorporated by lens manufactures.
But there must be a way to do meaningful metrics .... I seen some real poor preformers over the years.

Also -
There are many 5DII sample videos on the web and some are quite good.
I would like to see more details on post production techniques using software like Nero, Adobe, etc.
This should include sound recording and editing.
Still + video edits would be of intrest.
Where can you point me for such ??

For FF DSLR's 12 or so MP makes a lot of sense.
24 mm x 36 mm = 864 sq. mm - when divided by 12 MP the single pixel is 7.2 microns which many consider the better pixel size with "existing CMOS design".
IFF Foveon Style or equivalent can be improved and become mainstream ... THEN we can talk of up to 50 MP.
But until then ... improve signal noise and optics {including illumination and reduced vignetting}.

MF DSLR is leg up on more resolution and better optics.

What is Canon's plan on these issues ??

The 90's were the decade of Auto Focus Lenes.
Many a sports photographer switched to Canon because at that time their AF lenes were considered fastest.
I think this may still the case but wonder why no published spec data on how fast these lenses focus.
Other brands also do not publish these specs. Why is that ?
Perhaps in light of recent reported focus problems they might focus to fast esp when used with AI modes.
I personally have not seen such reported out of focus images but also use Single Shot mode.
Is Single Shot and an ocassional "double clutch" {halfway down with front shutter release} the best way to avoid out of focus images ?
I am somewhat leary of even trying AI.
I have not used the back focus button.

I take note of "Evidently they are just calibrated to an incorrect standard".
Being a photographer and photo image technologist -

There are no real correct standards in any metrology.
They are all relative and some are considered more exact than others although this remains subject to debate.
The issue will be to promote and use a universal standard with all makes and models over product lifetimes.
This is easier said than done due to grandfathering and individuals using different rulers [those they prefer].
Without a higher authority {like God} over equipment manufactures, we have found the need for end user software calibration so that all can lie to the same degree. We match with critical customers via an agreeed upon standard.

Other than calibration standards and 30 or even 29.97 fps... use 1 seperate audio recording system like Hollywood and then you might want to remix [even recreate] the sound in the studio. Of course this is 1 of a dozen reasons while Hwood productions cost $200 million.
