Maybe if he had the he would of known carrying a pistol in your lap was a bad idea. Of course the cop was found not guilty. His actions were objectively reasonable by any police officer. He pulled someone over because they matched the description of an armed robbery suspect and during the stop the suspect moved his hands in the direction of a gun sitting in his lap. Honestly who wouldn't of shot?

Re: Environmentalist Protest Destroys The Environment At Standing Rock

Actually they were asked to clean up but couldn't complete it. Really "beefy federal agents?". I've seen as many 50yo gray haired women as anything I would call beefy, as bizarre as that particular word choice is. I mean even the title. They didn't beat her. Her head split open when she hit the ground. Was she tackled, pushed, or did she trip and fall when she tried to run through screening? Regardless of what you think about the case there has been no financial hardship at all. The amount of 3 mill was what Kyles estate has received not what the book sold. Only 1.3 would be from the profits as 500 thou will be paid by insurance which has also picked up he entire legal tab. Mind you every bit of the profits were supposed to be donated to charity, and we haven't even started talking about the movie rights and other income, so Kyles widow shouldn't be using any of the cash anyway right? So how is it a financial hardship? Mental yes financial no.

Re: Gun Test: Smith & Wesson Model 632 in .327 Fed. The price is entirely consistent with S&W revolvers which go at a premium and the fixation on size ignoring performance speaks volumes. The vast majority of self defence shootings are at close range and 5" at 25 yards using a rest is quite good for a 3" revolver from any company. Most people wouldn't even bother to shoot this gun at 25 yards as it's just outside the engagement envelope for the majority of self defence situations.

Re: Craigslist ad leads to gunfire at Missouri City Walmart

No it doesn't. Also a mall shooting where a rifle carrying shooter was confronted by an armed Cit and then detoured into the back service hallways where he was stopped by police. You can't hear when you stop listneing

Re: Hunter saves own life after rattlesnake bit him

The reality is there isn't much proof good or bad about snake bite extractors because among other things not everyone reacts the same. Most times a kit such as the one used here may not get any more than 1 or 2% of the venom out of a bite, but who is to say that may not be enough to make a difference. These devises are the least effective on large muscle areas such as calf and thigh and should remove more poison from bitten extremities like hands and feet , which are a good portion of the snakebites overall. There is a concern that there may be tissue damage from such devices but if you are heading right to a hospital it seems small risk, While you can argue at the possible effectiveness of such devices the possible benefits if used correctly far outweigh the negatives.

Re: What the evidence says about pepper spray safety

It might suprise people to know that while OC spray is dangerous and can cause health issues you are more likely to be injured if a cop just puts his hands on you than if OC is used. Yep nothing is safe or guarantied but used reposible OC is safer than westling with someone and not for the police but for the suspect. Now I don't know if the protesters needed to be removed or not but 95% of the arguments used are ignorant or just plain faulse. This is an example. Also some facts are wrong or misleading in the excerpted article. Civilian and Law Enforcement Pepper sprays range from 0.18% to 1.33% Major Capsaicinoids. Bear Sprays range from 1.0% to 2.0% Major Capsaicinoids. There are 5 Capsaicinoids or types of pepper used in OC spray. The amount of Oleoresin Capsicum, one of those 5 Capsaicinoids, does not indicate how strong the spray is. It's a combination of total Capsaicinoids and the amount of Oleoresin Capsicum. Trust me though bear spray is much stronger. In the ACLU study none of the deaths were directly atributed to OC spray and all but 2 were drunk or on drugs. The other 2 were......well had mental issues. Really being drunk and being arrested looks more dangerous than OC and the same.

Re: TX GOP Official Opposes Jewish House Speaker: Christians ‘Are The People That Do The Best Jobs’

Just one point for the Texas haters out there. The local news said that gay students won the right to join christian clubs at schools and I just don't see how they got that. I also felt the condemnation for the dissenting justices was a bit unwarranted because the way I read it they were not trying to say the policy was unconstitutional but rather that the policy came into effect afterwards and so wasn't really an issue. Also am I correct in gathering that the lower courts could still find that the way the policy was applied was inconsistent and rule against the school? Can't see it mattering to anyone else but it is a law school and so the students may find all this more important than the rest of us. Maybe they worked a little to much on their own case.

Re: A Small Victory For Gay Rights

The decision covered if the policy was constitutional (ignoring the fact that it seems to have been put into place as a fig leaf to cover the schools ass) on it's face but made no statement on the application of the policies directly. Am I the only one who thought that some of the concurring justices thought the policy was a little stupid? It seems the majority point was that the policy is constitutional and left the actual conduct to the lower courts but the dissenting opinion felt that the policy that was actually put into place after the decision to exclude the CLA means that the policy shouldn't of factored into the ruling and based on the other arguments made the conduct of the university was not constitutional. Nothing I read in the descent lead me to believe that applying the "everybody allowed" policy would be considered unconstitutional but that the CLA had not really be denied acceptance not for that but because some didn't like their viewpoints and did not want to have the university associated with them.

Isn't it impossible to have the kinds of groups that universities have without having some common purposes? Sure they can turn every group into, well, any group, since anyone can join but there seems to me to be some believed importance to giving students groups that they can identify with or schools wouldn't help fund them. While the policy easily seems constitutional the application of it seems suspect to me and more about showing descent with the message than concern for inclusion in this case.

Re: Anti-Terrorism Law Trumps Free Speech

This is the first post since the return of comments over at TMV that caught my attention and I agree I prefer the format of Disqus. The benefit over there is that there are more responses but you do have to "wade" thru some of the ultra partisan posts. I don't necessarily have a problem with people having strong feelings but at some point it kills discussion because the poster has become closed to conversations that aren't echoes of their opinion.

I would think that in a paper\press situation even such a thing as a guest editorial conveys information to the public and it would be very hard to outweigh the value of the press being able to do so. Unless the press was being directly used for coordination of activities or recruitment I can't see the court restricting their ability to operate. Some things are much greyer (is that a word) tho, like being a doctor in a neutral area where you assist injured terrorists. That I could see being ok, but providing such "in theater", if you are a US citizen then you should be prosecuted. Fine lines

Re: Anti-Terrorism Law Trumps Free Speech

I can't get past the idea of how unlikely it is to be able to separate the different actions of such groups. Living a healthy vegan lifestyle is very hard for adults but even harder for children. It is possible but to expect any significant amount of people to be able to pull it off is ....... inconceivable.

Some concerns with vegan diets include
*no complete proteins (Soy is the only food with the protein equivalent and has it's own issues)
*Iron - the iron in plants is harder to absorb so you must be very careful of amounts (and no coffee or tea which helps block absorption)
*Zinc - Vegan diets seem to inhibit absorption of zinc which means you must eat more zinc carrying foods.
*Calcium - people who eat and drink dairy still have trouble with this. How hard will it be to get it from spinach?
*B-12 - no known natural source of B-12 in a vegan diet.

The b-12 think is a real kicker. All natural my ass. That and something about a Vegan diet makes you an ass. Really self absorbed, often intolerant, and obnoxiously self-righteous ass.
