Lots of pressure from the US followed, obviously. It was sold to the public that, instead, the Dutch would help 'rebuild' Afghanistan with more troops, a humanitarian mission. Right. That blew up in their face, as they couldn't even control the relatively calm south of Afghanistan, which was not surprising considering the amount of troops and the vastness of the country.
Now, what's now been becoming clearer and clearer is that the Dutch government was blackmailed. And that was quiet easy: the US threatened were it would hurt the most: the wallet and a politically vulnerable subject: The Joint Strike Fighter project. Easy duzzit, the Dutch rolled over, selling the 'maintaining the Trans-Atlantic and historic relationship with the US' line. That, and the Dutch wanted one of their own to head NATO, play among the big boys. Anyhoo, Dutch soldiers started dying (no way!), to cover their asses, the Defense Department started printing 'support our troops' stickers (I'm not kidding) and other propaganda shit has been hitting the airwaves and newspapers ever since. It's disgusting. Call the Dutch pragmatic, call them calvinists (true), but they are weasels. Crying wolf a little too late.

Last week this appeared in the Washington Post. So far, in all my working life, I've never, ever, heard somebody at the office in particular of generally (in the news, aka public outcry) demand or push for showers in connection to biking to work. Some have it anyway (government), some don't. The question was, "are they essential?".

I understand that many people have different commutes and atmospheric circumstance, so my point was totally biased.

However, I'd like to point out that often there's too much emphasis on special bike clothing. All very sleek and fancy, but it has nothing to do with the practicality of cycling. This should be simple. Just step on and bike away. Whole nations (Denmark, Holland, Germany) have already proven it's the way to go.

Re: Amsterdamize : A Bicycle Commute Vlog

thanks and you're welcome, Jose!

Mark, I know, I should have rung your bell, too...and sshh, at B I thought going down Kinkerstraat would be interesting, bonus C :-)

Re: Amsterdamize Bicycle Vlog #2: “I Can’t Slow Down”

hahaha, you're right, I don't, easier to anticipate, use that 'eagle eye' ;-). I compare it to a certain 26% President still able to do whatever the fuck he wants, regardless of a Democratic Congress.

And our traditional media? Either slow to pick up, non-critical or totally absent. I missed this news in all of the Dutch national newspapers, I bumped into it on a mediocre (not so much anymore, I guess) news website.

One (yes, only one) member of Parliament here in the Netherlands saw this coming and started putting the provisions (on a citizen's ability to be taken off a terror watch list for starters) to the test 7 months ago. As of this moment, she still has to get past the application form, legal fees have gone through the roof already, so it's a no-brainer what this will do to our already vastly eroded civil liberties.

I've been trying to explain to people around me what all this security bullshit means, getting not much more than a look of a deer staring into some headlights, basically. What disappoints me the most, is the fact that all the EU (and national) criticism on US violations of international laws over the years can be boiled down to hogwash, theater, spineless dribble. I'm disgusted.
