I lived in Amsterdam in the late 1970s for about eight months, before returning to graduate school in the States, and eventually settling and raising a family here. I can report that, although I have a happy, successful life, and I appreciate many good things here, not a day goes by that I don't feel a little homesick for the life I left behind in The Netherlands. Every brief visit I make there makes that feeling even stronger. I don't think I will ever get over it, and for that matter, I don't even want to!

Re: Veraneando En Amsterdam

Stunning! What a perfect evening to make a film. I especially love the shots where your shadow precedes you. I am so looking forward to "coming home" next week! By the way how were you holding the camera? If you were American or Australian, I would assume attached to your helmet, but I know better!

Re: Fietsforce

I need them; my bike has another flat tire, and I'm really tired of changing it by myself!

Re: Fighting The Bull In Society’s (Little) China Shop

Since January, I am on my city's Bicycle Advisory Board, so now have some responsibility for helping to develop the policy that moves our infrastructure in the right direction. In the four meetings I've attended, I have quickly learned that the pushback for any suggestions or ideas we have (and I haven't really even tried to push the idea of cycle tracks, just lanes and sharrows) is very strong. We've been reprimanded soundly for asking for the impossible. I have urged our Bike/Pedestrian coordinator to read David Hembrow's blog, and I bring up the ideas when I can, but so far they fall on deaf ears. I will keep trying. They may come to wish that they had not invited this Dutch Girl to be on the Board!

Re: Fighting The Bull In Society’s (Little) China Shop

I listen to our engineers talk about why we can't have cycle infrastructure because our road widths are in many cases too narrow (while we are drowning in rivers of asphalt), I wish I could force our "experts" to take a trip to The Netherlands and see how its done! All the same, I have to admit that is a very cute car!

Re: http://www.tweetdeck.com/twitter/amsterdamized/~cCpz7

It's possible; but that's ok; most of the time your posts are to REALLY useful links. It's like a dance. However, the soundtrack does leave a little to be desired, with all the brommers. Too bad they can't be made to be quieter. I understand how useful and desirable they are, especially on a rainy or windy day, when you want to make that trip as quickly as possible, but the noise would keep me from ever wanting to own one!

Re: Frosty Transition

So glad you're back! We have had a mild winter so far, with only a little snow that has now melted in a drenching rain! Dedicated winter cyclists here can buy studded snow tires for their winter rides! I've often wondered if that helps at all! So far, I am happy to report that it's still quite possible to ride on a regular basis, as long as you can dress warmly.
