Mike, I hate the Beavers as much as anyone, but I lived in Halsey for three years, and I happen to know that there are four fervent Beaver fans in Shedd. And as for Tangent, well get out of town. No, I mean get out of town. You don't want to be caught in Tangent after dark. Suffice it to say that there are tens of Beaver fans besides just the ones in that town I lovingly call East Philomath.

Well, I have a new second favorite NFL team pending, of course where/if Marcus lands. I was surprised how much I hung on every pick in the first round, knowing that Justin would be the only Duck taken. Must be my un-slaked thirst for sports. You can only bet on horses at obscure Nebraska tracks for so long until you need to see how far Mel Kiper's hairline has receded, or how gray Trey Wingo has become. Good luck to one of the best young men to have ever worn the colors of the Ducks, no matter what color they were wearing that week. You will make us proud in that new joint that L.A. put up for you.

As a Graybeard with "Underlying conditions" I feel terribly helpless! In my prime I would have been working on providing food for the poor, shelter for the roofless, and Spiritual guidance for the hopeless. Now, I have to pick up my groceries in the car and avoid crowds at a movie theatre. My aunt used to say, "Old age is not for wimps." I thought she was being funny. She wasn't. To be honest, I hadn't given a thought to Duck football with respect to the current crisis. I was too busy lamenting the unfulfilled end of the year for the athletes of the winter and spring. All I do know is what I don't know, when it comes to the future. But changes are in the offing for all of us. God Bless us in our time of need and despair.

Do you know what Justin's "official" 40 time was? I know it isn't an exact science until the combine, but just curious what JH was compared to Ashford's. I don't want to worry prematurely, but 4.6 seems iffy for turning the corner.

Fun conversation, but we are blinder than that 19th Century warship (to piggyback Jon Joseph's imagery) lost in the mists off of Seaside until we secure an OC. I'm excited for Ashford, though I would have loved to see him a tick faster than 4.6. Many is social media (not here, because we're all smart and stuff) predict that Shough will actually be better than Herbert. If so, close the gates and let's get started. I'm not convinced about him, though. I do agree with the person who said Butterfield may have been given short shrift in the article. But, as I said at the beginning, some of this will appear much clearer after we get an offensive coordinator with some creativity and style...or so I am hoping.

Two comments in the article wondering if this game even matters? That's not my wild-eyed frenzied friend! Of course it matters! Every bowl game is a springboard to the next season and an addition to a winning culture for the younger players. They need to know that they aren't here just to play in big games on national television, and under the Goodyear blimp. They are here to WIN said games, leaving their opponents vanquished and in the mud. Every opposing player must regret their decision to attend any other school. Surely it is a result of too much Holiday feasting to suggest otherwise. As I type this it is 10:35 am, New Year's Day. Three and a half hours to void our bowels, sharpen our wits, and get ready to march over the top of the Badgers. Let's get to voiding!

I am flummoxed. Though he is not always, today Charles Fischer was my spirit animal. I too thought we would lose (I thought by ten-ish,) I believed we would lose because JH would have one of those inexplicable stretches where he can't hit his mouth with an M&M. He did have one of those stretches and we still pole-axed the presumed toughest team in the conference. Imagine the score if he hadn't gone into a quarter-long slump. I don't want to look beyond tonight...tonight, except to imagine what it will be like to see #5 blowing up offenses next year.

@Ken Stewart, I didn't take from Scott's comment that Cristobal doesn't deserve credit for this year's team. So far, this is a better year than I thought possible. If we could go to the Rose Bowl and win it, I would pop with joy. Like others in this thread, I don't believe we could make the Championship semis and win, or even come within two TDs. But, the Rose Bowl! Yummy! However, the headline in this article contains a variation of the word "proof"," and that is a tricky word indeed, and one that takes a long time to come to fruition. Like Scott, I have read many articles (and Mr. Whitted's is very well written) that appear to say that the final verdict is in and the outcome is a done deal after a relatively short period of time. Not just about coaches, but about any number of things. Goodness knows we all like to spike the football and declare ourselves the winner. Few things are more fun than winning online arguments. But, the "proof" that the doubters were wrong will take place in 2025, or so, when Cristobal's culture and style has survived the test of time...or not. For now, let us enjoy the season before us, and eschew "proves." We still have a hill to climb to win that Pac-12, and we have many hills to climb before ascending Mt. Proof.

You favor the Utes "significantly." Seven points? Ten points? More? I agree with a lot of what you are saying and I would prefer to win/be extra-extra competitive in the Rose Bowl rather than having our doors blown off in a playoff semi. But, I don't think there is a Pac-12 team out there that would be a significant favorite over us. I would favor the Utes by 3-4.5 max.

Thrilled with the win, and I think a clear-eyed read of the box score ought to slow the roll of people who rode Herbert’s behind in this forum...all...game...long. I know that in-game comments are often ill thought out and a little ridiculous post game. But, pull Herbert? Next year we are going to wish he was still here. That said, the north is ours and it feels so good. The Huskies are vanquished and that feels infinitely better. I intend to spend the rest of the evening with a smile on my face.

It is currently 2:09 am. I'm awake and having trouble catching my breath. Is it because of a nagging cold? No, that isn't it. Is it because my anniversary is in a month and I have no idea what to get the hot wife? No, that isn't it. Is it because the DOW took a dump today? No, that isn't it. I can't properly catch my breath or get to sleep, because this is the most important sports day of the year! Here are the facts, as I experience them. Since 1979 (my first year in Oregon) I get the willies and the shakes on this day. Occasionally, I throw in the trots, just for fun. The records of the two teams do not matter. The rankings do not matter. This is HUSKY DAY, DAMMIT, and no athletic endeavor ON EARTH will be more important until NEXT HUSKY DAY, DAMMIT! It has been even worse since 2000. Because, since then I have to live near and next to these infernal hounds for the next 12 months. Most of you have no idea what that is like, because life didn't guide you to the Puget Sound and fan-mange as far as the eye can see. So, to blazes with sleep and proper respiration, brothers and sisters! Let us all, with whatever understanding we have of a Higher Power, beseech He/She/Them/It to grant us this fervent prayer. Please, God, Yahweh, Krishna, Creative Force, or Bloody Rock...Go Ducks!

"Bandwagon" is a tired phrase that, imo, has no place here and little place in any reasonable forum. New fans used to be welcomed, but now they are derided unless they have some kind of three-decade bona fide. I'm willing to bet there are new fans that are lapping up this site and the knowledge it contains. I hope they aren't driven away with an expression that's lazy.

I'm not convinced Auburn is a top-tier SEC team so I would not predict a run through the Pac based on this game. Adjustments during the game were mostly non-existent, and I find that hugely frustrating. It seems we have to be up 28 at the half to hold on in the second half. I have a vague idea what that is symptomatic of.

So glad to see someone saying, "Hey! This is the year!" For four decades (pause to ponder how old I am) I've read analyses that say, "Well, maybe not this year, but next year for sure." The time for this team is now, and if our coaching staff can't wrestle 10+ wins out of this team, then it is on said coaching staff. Obviously, catastrophic injuries would change the imperative there, but that goes without saying. I'm more hopeful than confident. I read this morning that our team got off the plane and "looked like the Auburn Jr. Varsity team" when observers compared relative player sizes. If so, then we are going to have to be creative and savvy to be in the game this Saturday, and innovative and unique to win it. So be it, Mario! Take us to the land we dream of seeing! Take us to the top of Sinai, and over the border into the Promised Land! Allow us to dream of gold trophies with a black inlay! Get the National Championship that I (and Charles Fischer, my older brother from another mother) dream of attaining before we leave this mortal coil! LET'S...GO...DUCKS!

Enjoyed the article and the comments. Is the good the enemy of the great? That's the question hovering over this team and its offensive philosophy (and at times last year it was truly offensive). Why is that "the question?" Because, we are going to win 8-9 games this year. If we win 10 games it will seem foolish to turn over the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball. That said, there is GREATNESS to be mined. Is this the staff to mine the gold? I have my doubts, but oh how I love to be proved wrong about my beloved Ducks.

I'll bet I could put together an All-Pro team of players who have called Oregon their "Dream School" and then followed the siren song elsewhere. It is almost as empty as "thoughts and prayers." Let me see if I can put it another way. Once upon a time I was falling in love (with Oregon is my D.S, players.) but now I only fall apart when he turns around, (in the Mo Center) with bright eyes.

A week ago I wasn't even planning to watch the Selection Show. Today, I would have passed up (okay, postponed) a cuddle from Carrie Underwood to watch the CBS one-hour show, and the ESPN two-hour show live and in their entirety.

Look, it is all gravy now, but who is playing better ball than the Oh how we love to learn abouts? I have sixteen visions, boys and girls and they are sweet indeed!
