I’m disappointed that the corporate owners of the World Surf League chose to put this event (The Surf Ranch Pro) in its 2019 schedule even as it was just starting up for its first run. I think that’s a mistake.

I see this as a “specialty” event, not in phase with the other 10 events on the tour.

It does, however, present a serious option for making the surfing competition scheduled for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan reliably contestable. That seems like an appropriate venue for the technology.

Also, theme parks … that’s obvious.

But it’s not the ocean.

Mytho-Tragic figure. In my imagination and from several encounters & conversations, I think he was a sensitive only child and victim of disrupted parenting who found his Utopia at Malibu only to see it increasingly encroached upon in the early '50s and finally swarmed in the late '50s. His writings about his world and The World were prescient; it appears we are living in a world he feared and knew was coming.

At the time Nat and Wayne were on return from Europe with Greg MacGillivray, who was filming them and Keith Paull on their new short boards. They were drawing new lines on waves -- tight arcs that were so beautiful to see! They were ahead of their times.

PR'68 was a most interesting event (to me) ... I've been reflecting back on it a lot these past weeks, as we watched the island blasted to smithereens by hurricanes, and then witnessed our so-called commander-in-chief tossing out paper towels ... and now not sure they're REALLY Merkins. I remember when we arrived on the island in November of '68 campaign season was in full swing, and cars in the rural neighborhoods were driving around with brooms tied to the front bumpers -- to sweep away the nails that the city pols had thrown on the roads to keep them away from the polls!

No surf in the Puget Sound (except a couple of spots that look out the throat of the Strait. When I moved here I imagined I'd find surf, but I needed a lifestyle that could support 2-day excursions on the road, and that didn't play out. So most of my surfing is away from here. On the other hand, this is a great place for bike riding & fishing!

Don Kremers was a classic! And he passed away in a classic manner. He was working for an Orange County mag and was a the office. He suddenly stood up, said, "I'm going out," and keeled over.

John was a bit of a shy guy, for sure. When he was first doing his movies in Hawaii and California, he had Fred Van Dyke do the narrations. The 1969 Surfer poll banquet was held in San Clemente in May (or so) of 1969 -- so everyone looked tan from the Hawaiian winter (except Hevs) ...

The swell dropped right after those warm-up days, and someone alerted the officials that there were waves down by the nuclear plant, and so the lion's share of the contest was held at the beach called "Domes" ...
