Sockets reduce the load on the server. When I am behind a proxy, I use streamed HTTP.  The primary issue is allowing cross-domain connections. SilverLight can also be used, but HTTP only.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So I am taking traditional web services out of the loop other than page delivery etc..
