Cleared as in 'in the clear'. And thanks Hackademic it is not a basic mistake. If I was arrested for something, charged, and then told all charges had been dropped (there was not even enough evidence to take it to trial) I would consider myself cleared.

For someone who seems to read Press Gazette so closely it is strange that you could misunderstand us so much. Save Our Sources was nothing to do with payments…it was about police viewing journalists' call records. We've condemned phone-hacking many times and also the corporate failings which led to Elveden. We tend to be supportive of journalists, or at least to see the world from their point of view, as a publication for journalists!

It was sophisticated in the sense that a real scientist set up a fake website but carried out a real study which was published in a real peer-reviewed journal.
The study looked completely legit.
You would think that most journalists would want to know the sample size before running with it.
BTW journalists should be skeptical but never cynical in my opinion.

Why self-serving? We took an open-minded look at the research and came to the (surprising to me) conclusion that the biased press coverage was probably not a factor in deciding the election. We thought we would go out and ask some actual people what they thought (again with a totally open mind). They all said press coverage did not influence them.
This does not claim to be anything other than a vox pop.

It's a vox pop. Lot's of newspapers do them. As does the TV news. We were interested to find out what a few random members of the public thought about Labour's Leveson proposals so we asked them. It is not pretending to be a scientific survey. I know there are lots of those too and we have covered every single one of them.

Here's my take it on it. In a nutshell I have reiterated the point we made in the 2012 Editors' Code review that journalists need specific protection from commercial pressure:

I am sure we are fine to do it legally. Panorama's justification for exposing him is that they think he is a thoroughly bad egg and think people should be forewarned in case he targets them in an undercover operation.
I don't think that case has been proven yet.
There is the additional point that he has exposed some genuinely dodgy people so has concerns about the security of himself and his family.
For those reasons I haven't followed suit and published the Panorama pic.
It makes little difference as anyone who wants to see it can Google it, but we have to follow our own conscience on these things!

It's Alan Barnes, the franchisee, who has netted £60k.
Johnston Press has made an awful lot of journalists redundant in recent years. It's one of the big four publishers so rings a lot of bells for readers.

1. The Sun has said they are going to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal to appeal this. Though most people seem to think this secret court is a waste of time as it almost never upholds appeals over RIPA use.
2. I don't think PG has ever railed against the Royal Charter, we've certainly reported on a lot of abuse of it in the industry. Personally I think you could fit a cigarette paper between a Royal Charter regulator and IPSO in practice.
3.Again I think PG coverage has been fairly even handed on this.
4.The Save Our Sources campaign is targeted at the Interception of Communications Commissioner, the person who oversees RIPA. Ultimately though, it may be for Home Office to amend the RIPA code of practice to ensure that police don't use it to spy on journalists who haven't broken the law.

The aim of the petition is extremely clear. The Government should ensure that RIPA is used in accordance with the ECHR. Public authorities are using it obtain journalists' phone records in order to out lawful sources. This is a clear breach of European law. We want it to stop please.

We say that public authorities should go to a judge if they want to obtain journalistic material.
