One of my favorite bits of trivia about Doctor Who is that sometime around 2002-2003, former Buffy producer David Fury tried to pitch the BBC on a reboot of the show starring... Anthony Head.

The plan never came together, possibly because Russell Davies was also interested in the show and Queer as Folk had put him in a position to write his own ticket, but it's one of the great what-ifs of the show's history and Head would obviously have made a fantastic Doctor.

I found myself saying a similar thing in the comments to the obituary for Catherine O'Hara: one of the impressive things about Tony Head is that the man was an absolute smokeshow at every age and stage of his career, and yet the number of roles I can think of where he coasted on his looks is a flat zero.

One of the funnier bits in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the kids reacting with horror and disgust any time Giles seemed to be hooking up with anyone. Head was barely into his 40s when Buffy was filming, and was still absolutely leading-man handsome, but he made the gag work because he absolutely nailed playing Giles as someone surrounded by children who made him feel ancient at every moment, despite looking like this:

It's hard to think of another film that I have more mixed feelings about: Taylor is brilliant in it, and Herron is probably one of the most underrated directors of the 90s and early 00s. And it's just a shame how many films of this era have disappeared into the maw of IP law clusterfucks and corporate indifference to same.

But man... the film flat skips over the fact that Solanas also shot Mario Amaya, and continued to stalk and harass Warhol — a man who, it can't be emphasized enough, had done nothing to her except make the mistake of letting her attend events at the Factory and decline to produce her play — for years after she left him permanently disabled by shooting him with every intent to kill.

She's tragic only in the sense that everyone with a crippling mental illness is tragic, but I can't say she deserved to be remembered, and certainly not by a film as good as this one.

About the only thing that's an unmitigated positive about this movie existing is that it required Alison Brie to go on a press tour and she decided to lean in to the ridiculous outfits.

Counterpoint: Solonas tried to murder a man who had never laid a finger on her (and while failing to kill him left him permanently disabled), also shot a random bystander, and her justification for it was 100% delusion. She's tragic only in the sense that every story about the severely mentally ill is tragic, but most mentally ill people don't shoot anyone else.

(The movie does not cover much of her life after the trial and conviction, but she continued to stalk and threaten Warhol and others for years afterward.)

Yeah, I was getting really excited by this review until that jumped out at me. Sugar was some of the most embarrassingly awful shit I've ever watched, and I bailed out long before the even-more-mortifying plot twist at the end.

I'll still try this because Tatiana Maslany, but I'm scaling my expectations back to "cautiously pessimistic."

I really, really don't understand why Collins has now twice made the announcement before he was actually holding the keys. There's no reason to think that Jones can't keep this tied up in court for years to come, not least since any judge who finally signs off on the deal will have to pay for private security for themselves and their families for the rest of their lives.

Coldplay is fine. I think they somehow became the sin-eaters for all of the musical/production sins of their era and then of course the whole Paltrow thing, but their first three albums are pretty unimpeachable examples of what is admittedly not my favorite genre, and I saw them on the "rush of blood" tour and they were at least then a fantastic live act.

Every once in a while Grohl or Homme will make some noises about it, but JPJ is 80 now and I feel like if it was going to happen it would have happened years ago. (Homme's alcoholism can't be helping matters.)

A lot of that is that there's no "they" in the first album: Grohl recorded all of the instrumental tracks, and didn't put together what we now think of as the band until afterward. This was less then a year after Cobain's suicide and basically marks the last moment in Grohl's career when he had something to prove and you can really hear that.

Counting on my fingers here, but three beers and two shots of whisky inside of an hour really sounds more like "a drinking problem" than anything else. Which frankly might explain some of Grohl's more notorious lapses in judgment in the last few years.

This is enormously premature. The deal has to be approved by the judge, who already threw out one settlement, and Jones has right of appeal.

The thing about civil law is that axioms like "you can't libel the dead" and "the truth is an absolute defense" is that these are defenses, not get-out-of-jail-free cards. You have to argue them in front of a judge, paying your legal team $20,000/hour the entire time, and the argument only works if the judge agrees with you. Maybe he does and he throws out the case with prejudice. But maybe he doesn't, and now you're going to spend the next 2-10 years locked in litigation.

People with something to lose tend to approach scenarios like this with appropriate caution.

The best part about this is that we've basically replaced a once-a-decade-or-more death from falling masonry bits with a regular cadence of deaths and injuries (and the odd bit of property damage) from collapsing scaffolding! The entire industry adds negative value and negative safety to the city, and we would be better off in every measurable way if we did away with them altogether and revoked Local Law 11, but scaffolding vendors are now a constituency, so that's never going to happen.
