In what deluded reality do you live in that there’s some grand manipulation at play to reshape the legacy of this movie. A bunch of shitty insecure men couldn’t handle the idea of a nerdy ‘80s property being geared towards women and —guess what —three years they still can’t handle it. That’s the entirety of the narrative surrounding this movie.

I do appreciate you in admitting that, because you aren’t busy living a life, you’re able to keep this narrative going on in 2019.

Thank you. I apologize if my dunking is a bit scattershot but I just feel like the initial toxicity surrounding Ghostbusters 2016 was so disgusting that it can never be forgotten. I just want anyone who still clings to the “Ghostbusters 2016 and that’s a matter of fact” to remember that a lot of bad stuff was done in the name of that opinion and that the movie does mean something to some people, particularly young girls.

Self-reflection is never easy as we have to take a long hard look at ourselves without the lies or personas we adopt to mask flaws or insecurities we've amassed through years to survive. It's a worthwhile process and I think if you worked at it and maybe met with a counselor or therapist you could work to free yourselves of these burdensome masks and live a happier and freer life where you're more open and accepting to new things.

Alright, even disregarding any opinion on quality, what I also don't like is that this new legacy sequel is pretty much invalidating the 2016 movie and any of its fans. This is Ghostbusters we're talking about, not The Godfather. I don't think there's any reason why Reitman couldn't do some retconning and bring back a couple of 1984 and 2016 characters and put them all in the same universe.

If it holds more appeal for 10-year old girls than it does 30-year old men, does that make it crap?

Let me explain why the AVGN thing bothered me so much. And please keep in mind, I like James. I watch Cinemassacre all the time. I was extremely disappointed with how both he and RedLetterMedia reacted to Ghostbusters 2016.

The issue with James flat-out refusing to see the movie is the implication that it has to be made exclusively tailored to his tastes. It's not that he has a problem with four women starring in the film...it's that, with four women in the lead roles and a female screenwriter, the content may not be exclusively geared towards him. It may have jokes which he can't relate to. It may involve relationship dynamics between women that doesn't resonate with him. Instead of even giving the movie a chance and being open to that, he chose to throw a tantrum and say "if it's not made for me, I won't see it!!"

That's the heart of the problem with the reaction to Ghostbusters 2016. There's this belief that, because it doesn't first and foremost appeal to the young male demographic, it's trash. An 8-year old girl might see it and think it's the best movie ever but...who cares what she thinks. It's not her movie.

Scroll through this comments thread. Look how many types you see men posting variations of "Why do people keep trying to defend this movie?" It's like they can't wrap their heads around someone other than themselves liking it. Just once I would like to see a comment like "you know, I didn't like it, but then I saw how much it meant to my niece and I realized that it does have its audience and it has value for them."

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that. I had to endure piece of shit "fans" mocking pictures of the cast of the 2016 Ghostbusters visiting sick kids in the hospitals MONTHS before the movie even came out so it's not possible for ANY reaction to this stupid movie to be overblown. These "fans" already see this movie's very existence as acknowledgement that their horrible opinions are valid and matter so there is absolutely no excuse -- intentional or not -- for Reitman to refer to this as a concession to them. He knows very well about the despicable toxicity displayed by Ghostbros only three years ago and is making something which purposely disregards the existence of the 2016 film and caters to what they wanted: direct ties to a series of films which were aimed 100% exclusively at them. You hear the same exact remark about Ghostbusters 2016 from people unable to comprehend the concept of a film not being made specifically for them: "let's stop pretending it was good." If they didn't find it funny, it wasn't funny, because it was clearly being made specifically for them to find it funny. Women dancing, lip syncing and making DeBarge puns can't be funny because it appeals more to those outside the 8 - 39 male demographic and this isn't their franchise.

I'm so incredibly incredibly disappointed that BMD would now take the stance of "wait, let's not get carried away" in terms of dunking on this stupid-ass movie which is explicitly catering to the worst of the worst. If you're so very tired of all this then pass it along to someone who isn't. There isn't even a single picture of Girl Slimer pegging Slimer in this article. What gives?

I would agree with you that the more typical blockbuster stuff in the movie isn't anything groundbreaking but I think Coogler is a great writer and the scenes that stuck with me most on a rewatch were almost all based around two characters simply talking to one another. My favourite scene in the movie is when Erik takes the herb and speaks with his father: https://www.youtube.com/wat.... I think the dialogue here is amazing.

I love Black Panther and one thing I don’t think gets mentioned enough in discussions of it is how personal a movie it is for Ryan Coogler. Creed was a movie he made for and about his dad getting sick and Black Panther carries on the idea about fathers as well as examines the need for cultural representation and role models for black youth. Coogler spent the first part of his childhood in Oakland so the prologue with young Killmonger in Oakland — that’s essentially him. Killmonger is someone who has been abandoned by his culture and left to fend for himself in a country where he is a minority. That’s why the movie ends with Black Panther going back to Oakland to help those kids like Killmonger — it is meant to represent Coogler making this movie for them and letting them know that they are recognized and their culture can produce huge mainstream heroes and role models too.

I agree with everything you're saying and the review itself. This is some of the best writing I've seen on The Mule. I just don't like seeing any review end with the writer literally saying "fuck you too" to the director. It's the same reason I don't like "worst of" lists or when critics personally attack directors on twitter. Let us be the side with some decency.
