To paraphrase Robert Houdin, you are not a magician, you are an actor playing a magician. The only thing that counts in magic is the effect, the method is of no intrinsic value. A great trick presented poorly is a poor effect, where as a poor trick presented well is a great trick. One of my best received effects by lay people is a card force presented well!!! It blows them away and they don't suspect the simple method.

The audience do not come to see a demonstration of skill and it's not a guessing game where you have to give them clues as to how it's done. They come to see magic and it's your responsibility as a magician to ensure they do, how it's achieved is unimportant.

You seem to think the method is the art, it's not, the effect is. Nothing is outside the rules of the art to achieve an effect. there are some questionable ones like stooges (grand if they are good, if it's obvious they are stogges then it ruins the effect) and camera tricks (the problem is what is a camera trick? off camera stuff akin to preshow work is fine but video editing to achieve the effect is more iffy, fundamentally there is nothing wrong with it unless it is poorly done and spoils the effect).

Jane, you seem to be getting caught up in the misconception a lot of people seem to make, that the trick is the important part, it's not, it's all about the performance.

Jane you seem to be against pre-show work? As a mentalist pre-show can be one of the most useful methods. There is nothing wrong with pre-show as long as it is done well and not blatantly obvious. As far as Criss's was in the clip above, I thought it was fine. To the lay person (the important ones) pre-show won't have crossed their minds, they'll think marked cards then they'll see that Criss dealt his card first and they'll be caught.

Wow, I love how the 'loyals' give out hen someone who hasn't seen the show criticises Criss and then give out when someone who has seen the show criticises him. Why do any of you bother reading these stories, it's obvious that no matter what people say, it won't change your mind. All reading the story did was make you cry and bitch about how mean and unproffesional a reviewer was. How the hell is it unproffesional to write that review?

What!!! Guys just hate Criss because he's a forty year-old dressed like a fourteen year-old getting some female attention? That is the biggest pile of bollocks I've ever heard! Why is every negative comment a 'bash' from the 'haters'? What a load of shite! It's a critical comment! It's insane that you dismiss it all like that, I said it before and I'll say it again, personality cult???

As someone who works in theatre, I think it's despicable that the show went out before it was ready. To claim Criss is still working on the show does not excuse it. It makes a mockery of the relationship between the artists and the customers. If you perform a paying show it has to be ready when the first real audience walks through the theatre doors, not four or five months later.

Also, just because it's Criss's dream it's good? Whether it's his dream or not has no bearing on the entertainment value of the show. Saying he should get credit for it being his dream or being outside the box is bollocks, he should get credit if he performs a professional level show that satisfies consumers and critics. From all I've seen he's failed to do that.

Okay, what the hell is up with this whole you either love Criss or you're a 'Hater'? What a load of bollocks.

From every indication available, Criss's show is not worth the ticket price. If you want to spend an insane amount of money on a ticket to see a show that probably won't be worth it then do, but if people don't want to risk their money on it they're not a 'hater', I'd consider them bloody sensible!

Also what's up with saying he's thinking outside the box? 'The Cure for Insomnia' is way more outside the box (approximatly 86 hours more!). It doesn't make it good, in fact it's a boring piece of artsy shite!!! Whether something is inside or outside the box has no bearing on the entertainment value of it!

Is it just me or is there striking parrallells between Criss's fans and say... a personality cult? They've got the whole with us or against us mentality, the inability to consider that Criss may have messed this one up a little and dellusions that they (and only they) really understand what Criss is all about! That sounds like a child moaning that they're just 'misunderstood'.

Bizzaro, I think stage two is well passed!
