Make sure to exchange info (names, business cards, etc.) during the conversation. Afterwards, continue the conversation with a "thank you, nice to meet you" email along with some insightful feedback/questions or connection you'd like to introduce that can really help them out. Build relationships, one person at a time. Follow and communicate with them on Twitter. Send a personalized LinkedIn request. On many occasions, I've found mutual connections, shared groups, or interesting jobs/roles to talk about after looking at their LinkedIn and getting to know them better. Keep the conversation going!

Re: Three Qualities that Net Jobs for Networkers

Great advice, Andrew. I'd like to suggest going one step further and spending some time getting to know each of the people you might interview with or work with (check out their social media profiles, personal blogs, etc.) for two reasons 1) you'll probably be working with them, so make sure they are people you want to be around 2) it will lead you to ask insightful questions and impress them at the interview. Of course, this strategy works much better at a small start-up than a corporation with thousands of employees. :)

Another thing, always be networking, not just when looking for a new job. When you tap your network, you're tapping relationships and relationships take time to build. Always keep an ear/eye out for when someone is looking for help. You never know when or from whom the favor might be returned. :) #payitforward

Re: Chuck Eesley: Updates

Chuck, we have a few new people joining our team, and we'd like to remove the inactive people from the team on the website. Cultural fit is important. Take a day off and offer to work for free for a day to give you an idea of what it's like inside. Worst case, you lose a day. Best case, the place is even more awesome than you thought and you are even more excited to join the company/team, or you find out quickly that this isn't the right place for you. Bullhorn recently launched a beta site called TheFit http://www.thefit.com/ where you can gain culture insight from employees within.

Re: Should You Get Martin Luther King Day Off?

You'll have to lock us out if you want us to take the day off, damnit! #smarterer

Re: Playing Games At Work

Thanks for the share.
