For grade school: Olive Beaupre Miller's Picturesque Tale of Progress (this has been reprinted in different editions, some two volumes in one); Child's History of the World, by Hillyer (not overly friendly to any religious group, but a good read aloud and discuss), some world history books by Margaret Synge; This Country of OUrs and Island Story (also called An Island Story and Our Island Story) by Marshall; get good biographies (Messner publishing, now defunct, published some excellent ones). I am not aware of a decent version of modern history for kids. Susan Wise Bauer's fourth volume is adequate, but only by comparison with the drek that passes for history in the public schools. Dickens and Chesterton both wrote very engaging histories, Dickens is quite anti-Catholic, Chesterton of course, quite pro.

For upper grades and maybe middle school, I like the American history set A History for Peter. A series of books by Unstead or Unsted is excellent,

High school and up (maybe middle school) Winston Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples;Gardiner's three volume 20th century, Paul Johnson has a couple of good books on the 20th century.
Samuel Eliot Morrison has a good history, albeit it ends too soon. Clarence Carson wrote a five volume American history we liked.

Ancient History- the Olive Beaupre Miller books mentioned above; books by the Guerber's , Bullfinch, and Edith Hamilton's stuff is great. Also look for the ancient history studies by Greenleaf Press. Homer, of course.

Look for good historical fiction to make eras come alive for your kids.

Take a look at AmblesideOnline.org, where some of these recommendations are found.

Re: Kelley attorney reflects on case, plea deals

So you're saying that the parents already suspected Greg of being a child molester, and they put their kids in the daycare where they stood the risk of being molested anyway? This was so they could either used their own kids as bait, or so they could set up circumstances allowing them have plausible accusations?
Wow.

But okay, I'll bite. Supposing this is true, what had brought Greg to their attention in the first place? Why did these vigilantes and advocacy frauds believe Greg was a child molester?

And where are these documented cases of such monsters using their own kids to 'out' people they suspect?

Re: ACA tradeoffs: Now they tell us ...

"Now they tell us?" Don't you imagine yourselves to be journalists? Why did you have to wait to be told? You could have checked this for yourselves. You could have, you know, compared Dem and Republican claims with the actual documents and resource materials and done that little thing called 'investigative journalism.'

Re: Roboseyo: Your daily (monthly) cute.

Babyseyo is adorable.

Don't all parents refer to themselves in the third person when talking to their children, especially young children? I thought it came naturally, and it makes sense. We're hardwired for language, and pronouns take longer to learn than nouns, so it's natural to use nouns with the little ones for 3 or 4 years before introducing regular use of pronouns.

Re: Community - Viki.com

A while back on my blog I linked to an episode of a drama on Viki.
