When the moderator was done making sure I hadn't suggested an armed overthrow of City Hall, he put it back in the wrong place. So you need to scroll down until you find where I replied to myself. It begins "Look, I'm no fan ..." It all makes sense in someone's mind.
Cheers,
Dennis

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Council just loves the hot water

Who. What. Interesting. I made comments about the Dispatch's business relationship to the Pinnacle in a different post and the next thing I know my response to you is "being reviewed by a moderator." Could be coincidence. Folks can draw their own conclusions. Too bad, I put a lot of thought into what you wrote, and replied honestly and in a spirit of dialogue. If the post doesn't make it up because it was "lost" this will be my last posting here. Again, too bad. I was just beginning to warm to you.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Council just loves the hot water

Look, I'm no fan of Pinheiro. I, too, believe he and other council members made bad policy decisions in handling of the layoffs and subsequent raises for executives. I doubt I'd vote for him unless it was a matter of holding my nose and choosing the lesser of two evils.
I have no aspirations for politics. My skin is thick enough, but I'm too much of a hothead and wouldn't have the patience required for the compromises needed to govern a community like ours. Secondly, I've lived in Gilroy for a couple of decades now and believe what the council needs is fresh blood. I come with far too much baggage. People would be obsessed with my liberalism instead of the issues facing the council. Plus I'm too cynical to be constructive. Wish it weren't true, but the last thing our town needs is a grizzled old cynic. No, it wouldn't bother me if I were attacked, either straight on or through ridicule. I put myself out there as fodder for attacks and have done so fairly regularly for the past 10 years. If it bothered me I wouldn't be such a loud mouth. Please understand that I was trying to use parody and irony to expose folly; I wasn't "joking" in the sense of "A guy walked into a bar ... "Ouch!" So perhaps my explanation could have been clearer and not used the word "joking." Sorry. Politics has denigrated to the point of absurdity. Something like one in 10 voters believe Obama is a Muslim. His health insurance reform efforts are met by people who take a portion of a proposal that would provide a patient with counseling about how they want to leave this world and turn it into "Death Panels." How is anyone supposed to work in that environment? I'm sure there are liberals who are just as whacked. I read yesterday that former DNC chairman Howard Dean wants to take a page out of Bush's playbook and instill a "permanent campaign" as a means of governing. Translation: Lie. Lie your ass off because we as a voting block are so stupid that these things actually work. Washington has infected all the Gilroys of America. So, no. No interest in politics.
My hope is that the antics of this council doesn't turn younger men and women, left or right, away from public service.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | City staff running roughshod over a complacent Council

Yep, marijuana is pure evil. Whatever You Are, God I hate explaining jokes. I have nothing personal against Craig, but it's so much fun to stir up conservatives ... oh, sorry, I broke the rules ... CONSERVATIVES by picking on Gartman. Nothing gets under your skin more than taking a slapshot at Craig. I don't want to recall Gartman; I was just making fun of the singlemindedness of you guys. What do you guys do when your wives or boyfriends ask you to pass the salt? Respond with "RECALL PINHEIRO NOW!!! (slamming fist on table). We have a columnist who is taking the council to task for its secrecy and all the danielpatrcikboyd2's can muster is to, yet again, chant your rallying cry.
As for Craig, I promise here and now never to utter the words Craig Gartman in a negative way again. Parody is lost on people who take themselves too seriously. I didn't vote for him, and wouldn't. He's a conservative and I'm a (drum roll please) LIBERAL. But I'm sure he loves his family just as I do and he acts with what he thinks is the best interest of the community. I've voted for conservatives in the past (I won't name him because for his sake I don't want my name tied to him) but with the behavior of you guys over the healthcare debate I have no desire or use for Republicans of any ilk. Not interested in compromise; not interested in bipartisanship. May the party in power steamroll the other guys.
The reason I enjoy raising your blood pressure is because this whole recall scam is because Pinheiro won't kowtow to cops like you advocate everyone should. Good for him. But honestly, you would be shocked at how little I give a damn one way or the other. Recalls are for gross dereliction, yet y'all simply have a grievance with Pinheiro's policy position. Although in Zappa's case I think it's for the same reason men drive big trucks.
So no more picking on Craig. Promise. And my word is good.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Updated: Report to DA: Investigate MACSA

Daniel, I'm sorry, you and Alan Viarengo writer so similar, I addressed him instead of you in my reply. No, I worked for both companies and the Pinnacle was bought out by Mainstreet Media Group, the parent of the Gilroy Dispatch, and the Gilroy edition of the Pinnacle was soon shut down by Mainstreet. The Pinnacle is alive and well in Hollister. Of course you can always try to call me an idiot and provide no support whatsoever for your contention, but that's what we're used to Alan. The Dispatch bought the Pinnacle because it was selling way too many ads in Gilroy and then shut down the Gilroy edition of the Pinnacle to force advertisers to buy from the Dispatch. Guess we'll have to ... oh wait, there's no petition to recall Pinheiro either. Well let's spend $400,000 of taxpayer money per council member and launch oodles of recall drives, because, gosh, that's such a practical idea in the midst of a recession. Simply not voting for your candidate of ire during the next election is so undramatic, so simplistic, and it doesn't provide a grandstand to play to someone's weird little fantasy of being a mover and shaker in Gilroy.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Council just loves the hot water

The problem is Gartman. Peter is about people. Helping people. He wouldn't be a doctor if his world view didn't include all people in need. Calling Arellano racist is like saying Sara Palin is a thoughtful leader. You are the only one turning his candidacy into an issue of race. Yes he supports Latino rights; he's seen what "justice," left in the hands of people with your point of view has done to minorities in his life time. But as far as I'm concerned, what's good for Latinos is good for all of us.
Oh, by the way, my great-grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee. Do I still count as a token white boy?

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Councilman solidifies candidacy for supervisor

Thanks again Ashley, I appreciate you doing the legwork on this. I totally get your point of view. And I, too, would want our tax dollars going to schools and other services we need. There's a host of services I would not support for illegal immigrants -- bank loans, driver's licenses, business licenses ... the list is long. Healthcare just isn't one of them. I can't argue with you and you make an excellent case for your point of view. We (the Bush and Obama administrations) bail out banks so the privileged can buy one more mansion, we send cash to GM while they are laying off workers, we are spending billions every month on wars with murky purposes while our schools crumble, yet we debate a bottle of antibiotics for an illegal farmworker. That I don't understand. I have to say, debating you on this has been refreshing. We didn't call each other idiots or resort to CAPITAL LETTERS and 12 exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a deep respect for Denise Apuzzo, and I know in my heart she wants the best for our children and our community. Sometimes we just disagree.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | An ugly and pervasive silence in the City Council chambers

There's plenty of unAmerican activity in this town. Not sure whether this editorial is about organized workers or the city council. But if it's intended to fire a shot over the bow of organized labor, then say that and make your case. If the editorial board believes unions are threatening council members then say that and make your case. Cops and firefighters need unions, otherwise they would be ordered to work exhaustive shifts, not have a decent pension and their families would not be protected if something happened to them. The local police union (I can't speak to the firefighters' union) has done a disservices to this community by not being willing to give anything up while other city workers lost their jobs. The unions representing the workers who were laid off understood that if X = revenue and Y = expenses, and Y is greater than X, something's gotta give. Not so for Gilroy police. They couldn't care less what the mechanic down in the city yard will do without work, or the mom who lost her job because police wouldn't compromise. Police and firefighters should be paid well, not extravagantly, but well. Their jobs are dangerous. But to selfishly ignore the reality of the situation so no inconvenience will befall themselves flies in the face of unions being a brotherhood of workers. Instead they climb into bed with Mark Zappa, a well-known right-wing activist who wants to recall the mayor and nearly spits when he says the word "union."

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | An ugly and pervasive silence in the City Council chambers

Well, smaller_government, I would venture that "snipey apologist" is a fairly unnecessary attack.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Oakland man dies in accident

Does anyone know why the collision occured?

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Councilman solidifies candidacy for supervisor

Ashley, thanks for the clarification. I seriously doubt, however, whether the chairperson of the committee knew these people were undocumented or not. I suppose it comes down to two different people looking at the same thing and coming away with different opinions. I support helping kids and moms stay healthy, and with my tax dollars. I just believe members of a community should help other people, whether those people are fifth generation Gilroyans or just rolled into town from Michoacan. You seem to be OK with helping undocumented workers eat, so I'm a little confused about why you object to a bottle of antibiotics when a dad cuts his leg with a hoe.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Mr. Gartman and the parade

Mr. Gartman,
You'd be surprised by what we agree on. First of all I don't understand the reference to food or lunches. I haven't a clue what you are being investigated for. The Mercury News indicated it might have something to do with check writing, but I have stated in several blogs, this one included, that you are only under investigation, and I for one presume your innocence. Where this ran astray was when I used you to make a point, and for that, I apologize. The point, so long ago, was that Mark Zappa wants to recall one council member while another, who he sings praises for, is under investigation for criminal wrong doing. Using you to illustrate my point about Zappa really wasn't fair to you. But the irony is rich.

You made a point about how sad it is when politically motivated people go on fishing trips against their detractors. You're right. I'm as guilty as anyone else. But what I've come to understand is that there is no "compromise" between the Mark Zappas and the Dennis Taylors of the world. You didn't start this caravel, neither did Zappa or myself. But it's spinning nonetheless. People, like Obama, who really believe there can be compromise between liberals and conservatives are deluding themselves. We have sank into a bitter culture war, and like any war, woe is the soldier who stops firing first.

Re: GilroyDispatch.com | Mr. Gartman and the parade

Anthony, sorry, I should have been clearer. I didn't mean to cast aspersions on the committee. My ire is for the underhanded way political activists in this town embarrass us all. What did the Merc call us, Mayberry? I do two things: I've voted in every election since 1973 and I'm a loudmouth. The point I wanted to register is that regardless of motivation, regardless of political intrigue, a (potential) crime is a (potential) crime. Shouting down those who notified authorities is like blaming Congress for Richard Nixon's misadventures.
