The antics of the Liberal party over the last couple weeks is pressing the patience of what is left of their grassroots support. They may infact have to form a permanent coalition with the NDP to remain a political power in Canada. They are indeed a rudderless ship being bounced around by the waves of public opinion and an international financial meltdown. While grits bounce around in the waves the PM and his Conservative government quietly go about building a budget and a plan that will guide Canada through the rapids and propel our nation into calm open waters.

Re: Thank you!

After Saturday's rallies this became clear.

The anti-coalition rallies felt more like a movement going from average Canadians to the the coalition leadership.

The pro-coalition rallies felt more like a campaign going from the coaltion leadership to average Canadians.

Re: Rally for Canada today!

Just came home from the rally at Fort McMurray, AB. We were enthusiastic but admittedly cold with the temperature dropping to -14 degrees Celsius (that doesn’t include the extreme wind-chill). I enjoyed getting together with others who share my views and concerns on this issue. People are taking notice, taking action, and taking a stance against the coalition. From this average ordinary guy who is typing this with his family at the kitchen table, thanks to everyone who organized and attended the rallies across Canada today. We did something good today and it has encouraged me to keep up the fight since this is far from over.
HAPPY RALLY DAY EVERYONE

Re: Former Liberal MP slams coalition, suggests Western separation

Mr. Dion,
Here is a question that screams for an answer. To all of the volunteers that dedicated and sacrificed their money, time and energy on doing everything they could to ensure a Liberal candidate won a seat in the last election only to fall short to a NDP or Bloc candidate. What do you tell these people? What do you say to those who fought the enemy every minute of every day of that campaign; with no thought of person gain; their only goal to see the Liberal party become victorious, what do you say to them? What do you say to the candidates who put their life aside to defeat their NDP and Bloc rivals? What do say to those who suffered malicious personal attacks, who went to battle for the Liberal cause only to come up short against a victorious NDP or Bloc candidate? How do you tell them, “Thanks for your dedication, thanks for your hard work, thanks for your tenacity but I am going to form a coalition with those that beat you. I am siding with those I asked you to sacrifice your personal lives to defeat, how do you explain that to them? You have lied to your very own people; you used them as cannon fodder. They have become collateral damage for a coalition. That is the legacy you have to live with now Mr. Dion. Layton, Duceppe this legacy is yours as well.
Sincerely,
An average Canadian talking with his family around the kitchen table

Re: Sincere advice for the Liberal Party of Canada

Stephen great column. Brian, I agree with you as well. The MSM has to recognize the fact their political views are not middle of the ground but left of centre. I believe people are now taking what they see and hear on TV with a grain of salt and not blindly accepting what Lloyd and Peter say as the gospel. As for Craig Oliver...you didn't fool anyone with your election coverage. Next election grab some Liberal campaign buttons and go door-to-door with your message. You have no business being on TV pretending to be a journalist.

Re: New Conservative Ad

It is funny how Dion was the target for the Conservatives before and during the election. Now he is the target of the Liberal party. If you watch interviews of key Liberal players, the strategy is lay the blame squarely on Dion and distance the party as far away from him as possible. If anyone every wondered if politics is a blood sport, here's your evidence. But everyone seems to know this except Dion.

Re: Frank McKenna watch

Does anyone know how much the Liberal's are in debt? This election had to cost them plenty and now they are likely to have a leadership convention in Vancouver in May, if the "experts" are correct. I assume the leadership candidates would have to cover a chunk of the convention costs but the party would be on the hook for some it. Can the Liberal's assume the majority of Dion's debt from the last leadership convention? If you are a wealthy Liberal supporter...get your cheque book out.

Re: Preston Manning talks about the election

Thanks Stephen, I enjoyed the interview. After listening to Mr. Manning I think its a shame he doesn't have a higher profile in Canadian mainstream media. He has great insights, but because he has great insights is the very reason we don't see more of him in the MSM.

Re: Media endorsements

Harper did not waver from his firm, confident, strong position that we can get through this crisis by intellegent planned decisions. He did not take advantage of people's fears, he did not make snap campaign decisions to take rash action as the other candidates wanted him to. Maybe he is a wolf in sheep's clothing (knitted sweater) but when pure strength is what the country needs you cannot go with the alternative which is a sheep in sheep's clothing. If there are any people visiting this forum, this weekend, who have not made a decision on who to vote for ask yourself what characteristics does a Prime Minister need in dire, uncertain times? Then match those characteristics up with your four choices for PM. I think you will agree with nine of the ten newspapers listed above.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Re: The Media on poorly bilingual leaders

It will be interesting to see the fallout on whether this has an effect on the average voter. I would prefer both. We can't let this slide. Someone just got caught with their hand in the cookie jar...ready to take the heat Mansbridge and company or will you serve up Dion on a silver platter.

Re: Is Harper’s campaign in decline?

You are most likely right, the only reason I figured that long was that it will take time for the Liberals and NDP to built up another war chest or pay for the present one. Also if the Conservatives do win Dion will be dropped into the lion's den by his own party ie. Ray and Ignatieff. Dion could buy some time if he can keep it close.

Re: Is Harper’s campaign in decline?

When the smoke clears and the average Canadian's net worth continues to slide, Harper`s no panic, stay the course approach will be comforting. Again as it was in the last election the voters do not want to see another Liberal government in power. The majority do not want to go with Dion and his carbon tax when it’s unclear how this would operate under the new world economics. The problem is Canada does not seem ready to entrust the Conservative with a majority government. In the past three elections when the Conservatives rise in the polls a correction occurs bring them back to the pack. I was expecting it to happen this time again and it did. But fellow Canadians keep this in mind...the answer to these economic woes will take long term solutions that require long term implementation. A minority government will not have the time or resources needed to combat the current situation. A trip back to the polls in another two and half years does nobody any good.
