I suppose my real issue here is that I'm concerned about the possibility that we will put Obama and this election on such a high pedestal that neither can ever live up to expectations. This country is messed up. A change in leadership was/is needed. But, as Obama himself even says, change doesn't happen overnight. And after the past eight years it will take a LOT of work.

Well, I can honestly say I have been accused of being an idealistic oaf from a bygone era on many occasions. And as Allen will attest I've never been a joiner or felt like I needed to be a part of a movement. I've just always believed. Some people have religion. I have politics and foreign affairs and humanism. I'm not sure I would say I'm extremely left wing. I'm an old school European socialist, so probably. I'm not Marxist or anything I would consider extreme though. But, as a historian, I also see everything as cyclical. We will swing back and forth between parties as we always have. We will have years of repression and conservatism, and we will have the beatniks and the hippies and such. We will punish the workers and then we will fine the business owners. Such is the nature of the beast.

I also wonder if I'm not different than most people our age. My mother at least gave me a say in the run of my own life from a very young age. I was encouraged by her to think my own thoughts and always be intellectually engaged in some way. (Sure, we look like slugs, but we can argue you to death!) So I guess I don't disengage in any aspect of my life, I don't go to apathy. I fight and cuss and spit and tell you exactly what I think in any forum I'm given. It's a flaw sometimes, but not in terms of civic duty.

Or perhaps I just never felt disenfranchised. I certainly never felt any apathy. I felt angry, but in the end whether you like to admit it or not the past eight years have served their purpose...to warn us about the dangers of despotism. It's a lesson every country has to learn at some point. And we thought the Brits were bad with their taxes on teas and such.

As a former poli sci/history major I'm a bit bothered by the fact that suddenly everyone is feeling civic, that suddenly everyone is feeling the need to vote and worrying about the constitution after these past eight years. I suppose I should feel proud, but it feels a little bit late in the game for me. The first time I read the constitution I was moved by it. My problem was always that I believed and was terribly disappointed by the process or the reality of what this country was/is. I do believe it will get better under Obama, but I think it will take time, esp. to restore civil liberties and constitutional rights (or rather to remove the impediments to those). I suppose it just makes me sad that we had to fall so far before we got to this point.
