I personally made it a point to speak quite directly with the Marriott team in order to ensure proper bandwidth. Unfortunately, as organizers, we have to trust the folks who provide the service (for a living).

Cheers.

Re: Online, House Republicans Lead

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the community. Thanks for reading.

I think you may be misunderstanding our position. What we did was explore the consequences of the decision and, in particular, the decision that wasn't made. Through this process we've identified more of the facts which led them to making that decision.

There's no way of knowing what would have happened if Team Palin would have decided to fight for what we consider their property. Would it have been a difficult fight that drove unsavory news headlines or would it have been easy and let them maintain use of a massive channel? We'll never know...

Re: Sarah Palin and Twitter Usernames

Re: "...it's up to guys like you and David to work to make use of new technology easier, NOT to blast decisions made by others."

This blog and the online politics community is not the Geek Squad. We are folks who deal with these issues on a regular basis at nearly every level. This conversation is part of a process... identifying areas for further thought and consideration.

After all, it wouldn't be objective, fair or prudent not to point out best practices, seemingly flawed strategies, or work to better define the "rules" for an emerging industry.

Re: Sarah Palin and Twitter Usernames

Hey William --

I think this exploration and discussion have been positive for both clarifying Palin's position with the situation and with identifying an emerging problem that elected officials should think about.

Cheers

Re: Sarah Palin and Twitter Usernames

Maybe not even a pay phone... just a regular, publicly available phone.

Re: Sarah Palin and Twitter Usernames

You need to tweak or re-think your analogy to make it stronger.

The State of Alaska would certainly "own" a website and all content that they built for the state (the legal pad). Twitter owns Twitter and is publicly available for all to use (presumably).

Perhaps a better analogy is a pay phone that the state was paying her to use on a regular basis. Then they wanted all of her contacts and comments which is ridiculous.

Re: @RNC: The Counter-Revolution Will Be ReTweeted

Fantastic work. Very nicely executed multi-channel campaign. This is yet another example of Republicans understanding how to effectively utilize the online channel to be successful.

The one area of innovation that I wanted to applaud you on -- and am now thinking about new ways to deploy in our projects -- was your widget which displayed the heat map of donations. (Let me know if this has been done in other campaigns.)

The thermometer concept -- thanks Ron Paul (Jesse!) -- was great a few years ago. We will all still use that tired concept (yes, me to) because it's easy for clients to "get," familiar for our devs, easy to reset or extend, and has a record of success. But those innovators who read this comment likely know it is on its way out and fun, interactive ways to display information are on the way in.

Empowering the donor and/or those that embed the widget would be the next area for exploration.

For example, your heat map concept had me yearning for the ability to drill down deeper -- to see who in Columbus, Ohio was giving donations (opt-in via Privacy of course). I wanted to be able to set the graphic to only display Ohio and pass along to my friend Jon Keeling who runs a DC-based Ohio politics blog.

The bottom-line is that a guy like Mathias Shapiro should bank in the information (graphic) age. And props to you for pushing the ball down the field.

Re: An Alternative Facebook Friend Diet

@Jordan -- Great post. While well over 90% of that group was active on Facebook, less than 5% had or would use Ning.

At the end of the day, we heard "Don't re-create Facebook," and "We don't need another Facebook or ANOTHER social network."

Listening helps guide an effective deployment of technology.

Re: How to Avoid a Facebook Photo Tagging Fiasco

Great post and tip Jeff. You've hit the importance of establishing your goals before using social media tools on the head. After all, Rome wasn't built with Craftsmen.

I disagree, however, with your allegation that those who bill themselves social media experts are "not to be taken seriously."

Without a doubt there are a large percentage of those that do use the label who are not in fact social media experts, which is likely who you are speaking to. But it's silly to think that there are not experts who happen to use social media as their craft. And do it really well.

In my estimation, the larger problem is that there is currently a void in the social media expert space. Therefore every big firm, small firm, political vendor, mail vendor, etc., when asked by their prospective or current client if they handle "new media" answers that they do have the capability when in reality they do not. The barrier of entry to utilizing social media is seemingly low - but to use it correctly requires a very high bar of deep, thoughtful use on major issues and constant learning and re-learning. A majority of the social media tools I used in 2006 are still strategically important today but the tactics change all the time.

Take for example Dan Zarrella (@danzarrella). He labels himself a "Social and Viral Marketing Scientist." Clever phraseology to essentially say that he is a Social Media Expert. And, in my estimation, Dan is indeed a social media expert. He spends countless hours studying the medium, watching how it's used, building tools to better understand it, working with partners and learning from how they use it. He. Never. Stops. Learning. (And teaching others.)

About social media experts I once Tweeted, "Social media experts are personal trainers willing to train and be trained by others to achieve mutual, pre-determined goals."

They do exist. And they're really good. They're simply scarce and harder to find then folks claiming to know what they're doing.

Re: Good Video, Poor Design

It is still broken and it is not yet fixed (while the video continues to spread/likely send traffic to the site).

Re: My Encounter With Sen.
