Actually, it does.

Chattarati places a high value on products that are created locally—be it video, music, photography, artwork, food, etc.—by local residents with a vested interest in the local community.

Why would we post something that takes place in Birmingham with no local angle? The good folks from The Terminal already have that one locked down.

What I find baffling in this entire debate is that Robin Smith or any Republican for that matter would try to position him/herself as the protector of Medicare.

We posted this piece as a Guest Editorial from someone who has taken an active interest in the community, particularly where food is concerned.

The opinions and conclusions above belong solely to the author. We simply provided a forum for him to express his opinion.

As far as fact-checking goes, it's been well-established for many years that the quality and integrity of our food supply has a direct impact on our health. You're partially right, however, in regards to autism. Most of the studies that have been conducted are inconclusive, though many (including a citation from the USDA) suggest that a gluten-free diet can lessen the effects of the disorder. And food's effect on ADHD remains undetermined with opposing studies suggesting different conclusions.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at, and I'm also not sure where you're getting your information from. We've never trusted third-party sites as far as our traffic is concerned (or anyone else's) because they're always wrong compared to our internal numbers.

Since I have access to the actual numbers, I can tell you or anyone else that's interested that our traffic has not been hurt in the least by this (temporary) decision. In fact, we've had modest improvement compared to the 2 weeks prior. And by the way, I don't attribute that increase to the change in policy either. Comments are just one of many driving forces behind our traffic.

Traffic on Chattarati fluctuates day-to-day and week-to-week. Some factors, we can't control. A few, we can. All I'm concerned about is consistent, longterm growth, which we've had for the last year. And even if we had taken a hit, I would still stand behind our decision.

We regret the change in policy (really), but we also feel pretty confident that it's a temporary one, and the end result will be a better website overall.

After reading your comment, I realized I should have been more clear in the original story.

For all intents and purposes, there are two budgets here: the one proposed by the mayor's office (i.e. the one that cuts Allied Arts funding), and a theoretical one, which will include changes by council members in the coming weeks. Neither is set in stone at the present moment.

And the growth plan is a State of Tennessee thing.

No, the city just has to show what services it will provide.

In some areas, that may be more than what a county resident receives. In some areas, that may be roughly the same. I suspect that the mayor will argue that the quality of those services is better when they come from the city.

In Tennessee, the "burden of proving that the annexation is unreasonable" is imposed on the person challenging the annexation.

The mayor said last Tuesday: "The county has claimed all the jurisdiction outside the present city limits through the county wastewater treatment authority. If we annex that area, either they have to retain responsibility for it, or turn it over to us."

My understanding is that if the WWTA cedes jurisdiction of an area to the city, then the city has a 3 year window to provide sewer service for that area. In addition, if an annexed area doesn't have sewer, then the city must provide it within 3 years, according to the Times Free Press.

Also, both the mayor and Public Works admin said on Tuesday that they are still working out some of the details with the WWTA.
