Stop policing the internet :) i am saying to you that, nearish to the moon every night, you can clearly see Mars, nowhere NEAR as big as the moon, just a rather bright star, but you can see it, and when looked at through a telescope, you can clearly see that it is not a star. I don't know if you can see it, i am in England and can clearly see it, in fact, a few of my friends and i are all watching it. NASA may say that it is however far away, but look and you can see.

2. Like others have said on this thread before. chill out and stop getting so serious about the hoax. even NASA has pointed out that it started as a misunderstanding and was not deliberate, and there is some glints of truth in the email. so calm down and stop getting so bothered about it, even if you are a mod. Why does it infuriate you so much if you know this much about it? what is the problem if people believe it? its not like they are going to spend money on it, in addition to the fact that it wasn't intentionally a hoax. People may go outside to see it, but I bet they'll have a good time if friends come round and get a good look at the sky anyway, something we all enjoy. so stop getting so serious about it.

3. Finally, any of the websites that allow you track mars, e.g. http://www.marsbase.net/m/p... allows you to quiet easily find it in the sky. Also, BBC mentions it here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/... under "Red Invasion" affirming the points i have made, and finally there is Mars Watch on BBC science i think starting sometime next week following the planet.

4. I am not saying the hoax is true, no way could Mars ever appear as large as the moon to the naked eye, what I am saying however is that Mars is very much large and visible especially so around the 27th August and if you were to look through a 75X telescope you could have a pretty nice view of the planet.

Finally, your status reads
"The event described did occur back in 2003, but this message is now hopelessly outdated. No such close approach will occur in 2009"

The event did described did not occur back in 2003. the planet Mars never has been and never will be that large so you can see it as big as the moon with a naked eye in the sky, as I am sure you well know. Might want to amend that.

Re: Mars, Earth - Closest Approach in Recorded History

It is true. check numerous space observatory websites as well as the fact it is being very closely documented on the BBC at the moment, BBC one I believe, where a group of observers are actually tracking Mars real time in order to get some goo photography of the planet when it does pass.

What is the difference between this website randomly slamming news that it thinks it knows about, and an email randomly creating news that it doesn't know much about. Please check EVERY aspect of the facts before you start slamming things. yes, part of the email isn't true, the fact that Mars will be as large as the moon to the naked eye, but the idea of the email is, and it will be visible at aforementioned size simply through a 75X telescope.

Infact, just in case you "hoax-slayers" dont quite believe the real-time BBC tracking of mars, you can see it for yourself on a clear night through this week :) its brighter than all the other stars, and you can find numerous websites that help you track it in the sky.

Re: Mars, Earth - Closest Approach in Recorded History

Actually its very true. At the moment (august 2009) Mars is visible in the sky, and on the 27th it will be the closest it has been to the earth in over 59,600 years. although it will reach its azimuth at 1:00 GMT.

Only thing is, Mars will only be as visible as claimed in this article through a modest 75 power telescope.

Other than that, quite true :)

Re: Mars, Earth - Closest Approach in Recorded History

Actually its very true.
