First off - Black List script DID have
that flash-forward scene and yes it was very unnecessary (a spoiler
even) at that point too. Second - hybrids never harmed human being in
script too. Action scenes were spectacular but even reading it I noticed
that hybrids did not hurt anyone.

Re: Screenplay Review – Transcendence

Well first thing I don't really like is that you spend half of your
review on summing up the story. I'm here for your thoughts not your
summation of the story :)

I totally agree that pacing here is
great, that author took time to establish Evelyn and Will, that he
didn't rush Wills transformation. I event think that you could say that
this movie is a story of woman who can't give up on her dead husband.
It's surely true up to certain point that she is the main character.

It's
also possibly the best representation of technological singularity in
movie. We get to see how once AI is made it can improve itself at
geometrical pace.

I'm surprised you gave it such a low score.
Yeah it's not perfect. There is some bad dialogue. I know it's to
explain to average viewer, but top MIT scientists don't talk like that.

I
don't agree on your reservations. It's well explained that Will made
big effort to cover up his tracks - using shell companies, hacking
satellite images. By the time army found out about it it was too late.
This is what I like about this script. "I know most of the army’s
equipment is run by computers
but you’d think they’d still TRY." - well they wouldn't. They would in
yet another Michael Bay movie. Just for some explosions. Instead you get
well prepared attack, with as you said, cool action sequences. Where
noone gets hurt thanks to Will. Sequences you can use in trailers.

I have only two main problems (SPOILERS):
1.
Why didn't Will reveal his plan when he must have expected attack? Yes
there would ba wolrd-wide panic, but knowing what nanomachines do would
get him large support. But we can always say, it would make movie
anti-climatic.
2. I didn't like future-flashback at the beginning.
It's cheap, it spoils ending, there is no need for that scene. Also
ending scene might be tad too ambigious (especially given how some
dialogues work before), unless camerawork will do the trick to make it
clear.

Re: The 10 Best Screenplays I Read This Year!

Transcendence has a huge potential. A real SF with great depiction of how technological singularity might look. It can also be interpreted in few ways (too bad ending is somewhat fuzzy, while everything before is not ambigious, I'd like more moral grey and more definite ending, also no futurospection at beginning). You can see it as SF about technology, movie about woman who can't let go of her husband, movie about our fears... If done properly it could be huge. It's my most anticipated release for 2014.

The Story Of Your Life is sweet. I'm really impressed with this one. I had serious doubts for the whole way reading it. It's a great contact-esque riddle. Alien ships land all around Earth and humans and aliens try to communicate. Main protagonist is a linguistics expert. Narration is interlaced with her flashbacks of her former life. There is interesting process of teching aliens english, that could use one or two tweaks (there is a scientist accompanying her during "sessions", but his role is too small, it would be cool to use concepts from Evpatoria message for idea of inquiry).

But for whole time I was afraid that it'll end up as some pretentious or banale moral story, and it will mess up a nice SF movie.

And you know what? It ended up as a banale story, but I loved it and it's fantastic how some things along the movie just fell into place perfectly, making it a complete construction, where you feel there's this rare perfect combination of elements. There's nothing to add to the story/construction and nothing you can remove.

So I hope it gets made into movie with just slight improvements - alien design is just dorky and unimaginative, and I want just one scene where scientist contributes to contact like he should.

Re: Movie Review – Iron Man 3

This is not a review it's a long summary with some thoughts from reviewer. You don't have to recap whole movie for reader to write about it's flaws and merits. Part of your readers saw the movie - so they don't need it. Part of your readers haven't seen the movie - soe they don't want it.

I've been reviewing movies for 10 years, so I know you don't need detailed synopsis to review anything.

Also Iron Man 3, while certainly not flawless rocks ;)

Re: Screenplay Review – Echo Station

I loved it.

Some outraged comments featured whining about decompression chamber next to declarations "and, yes, I am a scientist". OK then, I'm an engineer going for PhD, and apart from being scientifically literate, we engineers know how to fix things. And that decompression chamber is an easy fix. Since this universe features artificial gravity (impossible, just like time travel), there is really no problem with creating gravistasis chamber or whatever-device that will serve same purpose.

OK so with this slight detail out of way - I LOVED IT. I couldn't stop reading this one, it's surprisingly fresh, given that it's Source Code on Event Horizon with a touch of grotesque comedy.

There are several moments that make this one stand out while typical "good" scenario has one or two such things. Here we have second person in the loop, reactor (bit underused), crazy-funny-evil villian, gradual unfolding how loop works and that it's not as random as it seems and more...

Still it could use some fixes. Obviously decompression needs a quick fix. While I like this thing that Stas has trained to level when he can take on whole team, it was a biit iffy. I'm not sure about leaving some questions unanswered, like what really led to Amaranth stranded in that point of time and space?

There is also a important plothole (IMO) - how come whenever ship jumps back it's fixed to -4 hours state DESPITE memory logs?

Finally I'm not really crazy about this forced "you gotta kill maniac twice". It could be over after fight on Amaranth. Clash on station seemed very forced and clishe.

Re: ScriptShadow: Screenwriting and Screenplay reviews: Screenplay Review - Hyde

Oh I enjoyed this one a lot. Sherlock Holmes meets Silence of the Lambs, and dr Jeckyll, and Jack the Ripper...

Very obvious story, but due to victorian setting and relationship between inspector Adye and Jeckyll, due to violence and great dialogue I enjoyed it a lot. But it left me disappointed. I love mood and city, motherload of climatic ideas, but story is just too damn clishe. To some level it's a good idea - you have such a splendid world to show (kinda like Avatar) that there's not much space for innovative story. But they overdid it.Still I'd love to see this filmed with Neil Jordan or Del Toro at director's seat.

Re: Learn Screenwriting through professional screenplays

You forgot one, VERY important change. But before that, some general thoughts:

IMO opening shots were device used for editing, especially bird taking off.

I was waiting for Source Code like for only few other movies, but I didn't follow much about it except cast and trailers. So I was shocked and angry that he knew Christina - it really seemed to ruin thing, but in movie it turns out they barley know each other and that makes much more sense for reasons you pointed out. It played out very well.

I also was alarmed by shortening of time but it played out relly well.

And finally the finale. I didn't feel "Spielberg effect", but just like in script this "overtaking" seems ambiguous. Freeze frame might've been best thing to end up with, but I guess typical american audience wouldn't like it. And it'd make Goodwin gettin' sms scene harder.

BIG CHANGE:

It's evaluation of Source Code! In script it was just another of Colter, here everyone is new to this situation Rutledge, Goodwin, Colter. And it's this situation, that will decide about projects fate. I think it really gave it and additional edge.

Re: Learn Screenwriting through professional screenplays

Hell yeah! :) I just hope they rewritten last page. That and pretty much whole third act makes up for any lost sense of danger over shadows. And keep in mind we don't follow shadows too much, we care about learning what's secret about whole project.

Re: Shadow 19

If you mean starship troopers, then hold your horses.
