But that's part of the problem: the real, important aspects of the story are overshadowed by the way Rolling Stone tackled it, and the mistakes they made. They arguably did this woman's story more harm by not doing basic verification to help it stand up to scrutiny. They failed to do the work, and instead told the story they wanted to tell.

Talking to the men accused is absolutely part of the reporting, and essential for checking the claims being made. You mention the fallibility of memory, which is a very important point. How can you then rely on the memory of the person making the accusations and not compare that with other accounts and different pints of view? Her account is stronger if the reporting backs it up.

Were parts of their article true? It seems that way, but so much about what they did was unprofessional that it has now undermined the issues at stake. It also opened the door to the awful outing of the victim and errors made in the process of that action. Highlighting Rolling Stone's work here doesn't absolve other peoples' bad journalism. And, of course, the way they responded (or didn't) also compounded the damage.

I think they deserve the Error of the Year, but I of course welcome people to disagree and to make the case for other mistakes. Thanks for weighing in.

Re: The year in media errors and corrections 2014

One of many worthy entrants that just didn't make the cut, I'm afraid.

Re: How to drive innovation inside large news organizations

Thanks for spotting that, Kate! Really sorry to read this.

I did wonder in reading this piece why there wasn't more discussion of whether the injury at CrossFit could have been related to the author's years competing in kick-boxing, which caused her to pop ligaments in the exact same knee/leg.

Would someone who hadn't previously participated in competitive kick-boxing and injured that same knee have had a different experience? Is it possible the kick-boxing injury and the box jumps injury are connected?

People should absolutely be aware they can be injured at CrossFit, but having someone shatter a leg on box jumps seems pretty remarkable.

Just to speak from personal experience, I did a bit of boxing before taking up CrossFit. I hurt my left elbow in a fight and certainly had to make an effort to be aware of that when dealing with relevant CF exercises. It is tempting to push too far.

So, yes, I CrossFit and find it works for me. But people should be warned about the need to scale their workouts, and to be aware of possible injury. I've been to different CF boxes in different countries and the coaching and warm ups vary. So be aware of that, too. (But I find a really big improvement now from 5 yrs ago. Way more training and coaching and requiring people to learn the movements correctly.)

All that being said, it just seemed really strange to not do more in the piece to explain if the knee injury and the leg injury might be connected.

Re: 9 lessons Postmedia learned from cross-platform audience research

Is there any way to enlarge the graphic? I don't think it's a matter of having to choose between going silent or putting out whatever you can get your hands on. There is a middle ground there, where the press can focus on pushing things forward by turning up new evidence, and by telling the stories of those aboard.

As for which is more frequent (finding wreckage or not finding it), I will hold off on speculating, as I don't have the answer :)

Re: Slate’s good strategy for correcting errors on Twitter, elsewhere

Thanks for that comment and tip, Tim! We are currently in beta so the price is $9/month per account. We will grandfather in users at that price for 12 months, regardless of where the post-beta price is set. But don't worry -- I don't expect it to be a huge increase.

Craig

Re: Why good copy editors are ‘abnormal’ humans

Looking forward to checking out these links.
