My point wasn't to ignore experience but to remind people that experience is not a substitute for data, experimentation, and testing. Experience should be an asset, but when the world changes, experience may point you in the wrong direction, so being assiduous about gathering new data -- new experience -- is an important tool for avoiding mental and experiential traps. Will have to remember to pull that out more clearly in the future.

Re: What's Cory Doing Now?

Thanks, Tom! Also, more and more of the ebook retailers allow you to download samples which can be a very good browsing experience.

Re: Are you Listening, Amazon?

Excellent point. However, as the largest seller of books, Amazon has more ability to bend the ear of publishers than almost anyone.

Re: Publishers Who Don't Know History...

Alas, the data would suggest that you are an exception rather than the rule.

Re: What's Cory Doing Now?

Advisory board or on their board of directors.

Re: Big Brother versus Little Brother

Big Brother doesn't need to own the pipes if regulation (eg ACTA) means big content can turn your access to the pipes off. However, I agree that the preposterous nature of 3-strikes driven penalties certainly tilts the playfield towards DIY and artists working around/outside conventional models.

Re: Two (Well Three) Books Worth Reading

I hope so. I do think that the Rails/Django/[fill in rapid web prototyping framework of your choice] is pretty different as a result of decreased development costs and availability of cloud services, but not sure that 2009 is the tip year for that. Still, good points, Daniel.

Re: Grading 2009 Predictions

Tim, you an Ian can agree to disagree with me about Foursquare :-) I don't use it either, but if their numbers are true, 100k+ users is really surprising and interesting. Re concurrency, I suspect that bots have impacted that number for a long time, so think the repeating human visitors is probably a better metric, but your point is taken.

Re: what's in a name?

That certainly is one of the problems Philip and Ryan will have to overcome. It was certainly designed to avoid that problem, but some of the tools that made it easier to duplicate votes may have moved in that direction.

Re: -- sometimes it's the little things --

Ian, think the FB connect stuff is fixed.
