Thats the problem .. it isnt being taken away but if people see it threatened they are going to try and defend it with every excuse in the book or if someone questions them about it. This is the reason why so many get pissed off at me because I question it every chance i get and they get pissed not because i write it because like you said truth hurts and anyone who gets hurt tries to fight back.

Puerto Rico currently receives more than $4.2 billion annually in federal aid from the United States.[1] A substantial portion of this amount is earmarked for public welfare, including funding educational programs (such as Head Start), subsidized housing programs (such as (Section 8 and public housing projects), and a food stamp system called the Nutrition Assistance for Puerto Rico program.

Since the 1970s Puerto Rico's economy has steadily deteriorated, culminating in poverty levels twice those of Mississippi. Unemployment, although officially reported between 12 and 14 percent, is more likely to be between 40 and 50 percent because of the island's low labor participation rate. Only 46 percent of the population has a formal job, and to make the situation worse, nearly half of the island's salaried employees work directly or indirectly for the government. The Commonwealth's government expenditures are now over $9.6 billion, leaving the tiny nation with a steadily-rising deficit of $3 billion. Puerto Rico, with a population nearly 400,000 less than Colorado, outspends Colorado by 28%. Puerto Rico's paternalistic bureaucratic and political policies have turned the island into a no-growth, debt-ridden economy.

Puerto Rico's drastic economic decline can be blamed on many factors, but the most prominent link is the unintended consequences of an expanding government role in the provision of welfare services. Economic indicators show that the Commonwealth's economic collapse coincides with a sharp rise in the amount of federal transfer payments being made to citizens. Transfer payments going to individuals have increased exponentially, from a meager $69 million in 1968 to over $8 billion in 2002. Disability, unemployment, and welfare payments received by citizens now account for one-fifth of the island's personal income. This massive social spending, which began in the 1970s and continues today, has resulted in severe domestic disinvestment in the economy. Domestic capital investment has declined from 32 percent of GDP in 1970 to 16 percent in 2000. This means that the Puerto Rican government, rather than supporting the creation of jobs and market incentives, relies primarily on tax-induced revenue and foreign investment for any growth in the island's GDP.

How misinformed are you .. look at the whole picture Loriann ... Look at this blog ... Its nothing personal its the fact that I have to finance the thug/wannabe lifestyle as people like Tulo and Sosa reap the benefits of it. Now in their great feat of Stupidity We as tax payers are stuck holding the check so that their wives and kids are fed and sheltered all the while they sit home and "grieve" for the next 18 years.

So Ill pose you a question ... if all you had to sacrifice was a little dignity what would you do. Sit on your ass while someone else pays your food and rent bills or go out and get 2- 3 Jobs to support yourself and kids making sure they are adequately cared for while your working and barely making ends meet

THE UNTOLD TRUTH

The Democratic primary in Puerto Rico is seen as an historical event where average Puerto Ricans are able to cast their vote to select the party nominee for the office of President of the United States. But, they do not have the right to vote for U.S. President or members of Congress.

The Puerto Rican Democratic primary and the increase in the number of Latino voters for president of the United States has opened an opportunity to dispel the notion that Puerto Rico is a colorblind society.

Sadly, racism is as alive and well in the United States and in Puerto Rico today as it was in years gone by. Some even suggest that Puerto Rico is a mulatto society.

In a recent edition of the New York Times, Juan Manuel García Passalacqua a leading political analyst states: “On the U.S. mainland, Obama is black, but not in Puerto Rico. Here he is a mulatto and this is a mulatto society. People here are perfectly prepared to vote for someone who looks like them for president of the United States.”

I disagree with Mr. García Passalacqua's premise. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. As a child I witnessed first hand the discrimination against Black Puerto Ricans and mulattoes . They were the ones who tended the land and did the menial jobs that White Puerto Ricans would not.

When the Hilton Hotel was opened in San Juan, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the late Ernesto Ramos Antonini, was ejected from the ceremony — because he was Black! The specter of racism has always haunted Puerto Rican society. This extends to the politics of the moment.

A conversation with a friend who prefers to remain anonymous, was related to me. He received a telephone call from his mother in Puerto Rico. She told him “We will not vote for a n----r.”

Mr. José Nazario Solá, a board member of various Latino organizations in New York said: “From work and contacts with Puerto Rican social service providers in Puerto Rico, their comments clearly indicate that in Puerto Rico there exists racist attitudes that impact adversely on services to the population.”

Mr. Luis Vassallo, a manager with a company in lower Manhattan said:
“I was born and raised in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem). A Puerto Rican friend of my family told my aunt that she was always welcome in her home, but not her husband — he was Black.’”

I have visited Puerto Rico frequently. I have heard the racial epithets uttered by Puerto Ricans from all social backgrounds against darker Puerto Ricans. Their favorite innuendo is “yo no quiero ese negro aquí” (I don’t want the Blacks here)

Senator Clinton told Puerto Ricans at an event in the island, that if she becomes President she would fight for the island's right to vote directly for President of the United States. However, she “forgot” to tell them that it would require a constitutional amendment.

Meanwhile, back to the Puerto Rican primary next Sunday. According to the polls and the political pundits, Senator Clinton is the favorite to win there. However, the pundits have failed to mention that race is as big a factor in Puerto Rico as it is in the States.

Eh ive been in the financial markets hammering on the oil crisis its more of a challenge and the respondents are a little more educated and can spell correctly. Im tired of the pandering to people who cant spell and the Tribune who is afraid to offend someone ... good to see they keep their journalistic integrity .... but I have been on Marketwatch goin up agaisnt the idiots on the oil crisis keeps me amused at work also its summer time spend less time in front of the computer.

(b) Whoever, except as provided by law, carries on his person, or carries on his person or under his control in a vehicle, any stiletto, dagger or a device or case which enables a knife with a locking blade to be drawn at a locked position, any ballistic knife, or any knife with a detachable blade capable of being propelled by any mechanism, dirk knife, any knife having a double-edged blade, or a switch knife, or any knife having an automatic spring release device by which the blade is released from the handle, having a blade of over one and one-half inches, or a slung shot, blowgun, blackjack, metallic knuckles or knuckles of any substance which could be put to the same use with the same or similar effect as metallic knuckles, nunchaku, zoobow, also known as klackers or kung fu sticks, or any similar weapon consisting of two sticks of wood, plastic or metal connected at one end by a length of rope, chain, wire or leather, a shuriken or any similar pointed starlike object intended to injure a person when thrown, or any armband, made with leather which has metallic spikes, points or studs or any similar device made from any other substance or a cestus or similar material weighted with metal or other substance and worn on the hand, or a manrikigusari or similar length of chain having weighted ends; or whoever, when arrested upon a warrant for an alleged crime, or when arrested while committing a breach or disturbance of the public peace, is armed with or has on his person, or has on his person or under his control in a vehicle, a billy or other dangerous weapon other than those herein mentioned and those mentioned in paragraph (a), shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than two and one-half years nor more than five years in the state prison, or for not less than six months nor more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction, except that, if the court finds that the defendant has not been previously convicted of a felony, he may be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two and one-half years in a jail or house of correction.
