Most places seem to do a bunch of training, but there are always one or two crappy waiters who just don't get the idea. The sad thing? By bantering, they probably assume they're helping their tip count.

However, the worst offender I've seen was in Virginia. The place had tables set up where 2-3 rows should have been, and the result was a huge group of people encouraged to talk to each other (since they were facing friends instead of the screen), and without any end to the talking, it became way too ridiculous to try to see a movie there.

Re: 6 Filmmaking Tips From Akira Kurosawa | Film School Rejects

Glad you liked it!

Re: All Movies Should Be Available to Everyone at All Times Now | Film School Rejects

I know they aren't a direct parallel, and I know that the internet has flipped a mental switch for a lot of people, but why can't I get good Mexican food here in Germany? Why can't I get a Ford part for my truck here easily?

Why should the producer dictate when I get their product?

And have you tried a VPN service or would that not matter because the rate to connect to the internet is too high no matter what?

Re: All Movies Should Be Available to Everyone at All Times Now | Film School Rejects

That's been probably the only scenario that's ever made sense to me when it comes to piracy, and I'm feeling that pinch even more now that I'm in Europe. But with stuff like Tree of Life, we all knew it was getting a home release, so stealing it to watch on a computer 3 months before it hit Blu-ray is a bit different than hearing about a great new South Korean gangster flick that has no shot at getting released.

Then again, that great South Korean gangster flick is likely to get a DVD/BD release in country, so it's a matter of snagging a region free player and hunting it down.

I do agree that there will be a tipping point though - eventually people who wait to stay within the law and are crapped on will stop seeing the point. As that happens more and more, and as piracy becomes a much bigger, unavoidable problem for studios, the system will change just like it changed after they fought VHS with tooth and nail.

Re: Short Film 'Deadline' is a Disturbing Clean-Up Job | Film School Rejects

I liked that little touch. It was such a cultural touchstone, a massive international hit, that a lot of its look was cribbed by other projects.

I can see how someone could look at the stoic, black-clad mood of a lot of the fighters and translate that to their own project without being able to give them 1) an amazing sci-fi story background or 2) impressive fight choreography to act cool through.

Re: Short Film Of The Day: Quantic Dream’s ‘Kara’ Looks Gorgeous, Grows Sentient

Glad you enjoyed it!

Re: The New Black List Wants to Put Your Script in the Hands of Hollywood

Is this all based on assumption, or based on knowledge of how the new Black List is operating/which 1200+ production people and 40 readers are involved?

Re: Scariest Movie Ever: The Flicks That Didn’t Make the Cut

Ah, good catch. I remember watching Book of Shadows and wincing a lot, although it's a perfectly average movie that's probably maligned because it trashed the legacy of a surprise winner (which is now being shat upon like no one really originally liked it...).

But despite a bit of repetition, this commentary seems like that impossible moment where a director gets to politely shit all over a studio for destroying a risk that could have been far better than the product we got.

Thinking about this in terms of Cabin in the Woods, maybe it would have been ahead of its time, but can you imagine the dry, unobvious version of this movie as a contemplation of fandom and media? Without the trying-too-hard Nu Metal and weirdly cut reality-bending? It could have been the kind of thing that would have garnered severe genre love. It had a chance to be a sequel to an inventive film that was truly inventive itself.

Re: Do Time Travel Movies Have to Have Rules?

An excellent point (entertainment trumps these plot holes when it's big enough), but I would probably toss out PRIMER as an example of a time travel movie whose logic is air tight.

Re: What Does This List of the Top 10 Redbox Rentals of All Time Say About Audiences?

This is the same kind of stuff that dominates the basic cable channels. Each entry gave me a distinct visual that acted as a nice reminder that you chose some solid entries.

It may not have made audiences sick, but the Pig Scene in Deliverance bothered me so much I 1) refuse to watch the movie again and 2) complain about it every chance I get. It's one of those rare beasts - an incredible movie that I will never see again. Part of has to do with the way it's shot, but a much bigger part comes from him never getting closure for it. It gnaws at you. Ergh.

Re: 8 Gruesome Movie Scenes That Made Audiences Sick

That kind of thing happens from time to time since we have a decent amount of contributors and give them free rein to write about what they like. Context and a broader scope is key, but the production companies for all the original titles you mention are independent outfits and only Argo is being distributed by one of the major studios (Warners). "Hollywood" isn't making those movies, and they aren't usually distributing them. It's a slew of independent filmmakers filling a void in the marketplace.

Re: Just For Fun: Conservative Bloggers Already Pissed About Jane Fonda Playing Nancy Reagan for Lee Daniels’s ‘The Butler’

I wasn't aware someone was in charge of "allowing" people to play other people in movies.

Re: Hasbro Won’t Stop Trying to Make Stupid Movies Out of Board Games and Action Figures

Eye roll. That sells itself, but the act also felt fairly symbolic to me. A lesson why film critics should never fight or debate filmmakers because all a critic (me included) can ever say is "I don't like your movies," but a filmmaker can always respond with, "So what?" and then go make more movies.

Oh, and the Armond White thing is a joke, a turn of phrase.
