I have spent thousands on third-party themes that simply do not behave as expected. The participation via devices and tablets is so clunky and painful. I'm hoping this update will change all of that.

Re: July 2014 SocialEngine Keeping it Rolling Update

You guys are awesome. I can't wait for the solid community base to begin. That was one of the (if not the only) good thing about Ning. The community is why so many stayed so many years after Ning started collapsing and treating its clients like gnats. So with the great support already in place for SE, and a great community, you guys will rule!

Re: Millennials are not who you think they are - The Week

Both are, in different ways.

Re: Millennials are not who you think they are - The Week

Lena Dunham is the new Woody Allen. Woody Allen was never accused of trying to represent Americans, or a generation, or any other group except those characters who could carry out the story of his creation. I see Lena as very similar. There are conveniences built in to her characters and their lives that allow for the focus on the story. If she were doing a documentary, I'd have a problem with it, but she's not. She creating brilliant fiction. Woody Allen depended on the intelligence of his audience to experience his films, and Lena does the same. I don't think I needed anyone to point out that her characters don't represent anything more than themselves. I live in the neighborhoods depicted in GIRLS, and I already know how far from reality the demographic is (there really are Hispanics, Blacks, and Asians in Brooklyn, believe it, or not), but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the poignant, hilarious, and genius story-telling.

Re: Brilliant Video Explains the (Racist) Sh*t White Girls Say to Black Girls | AlterNet

There's a huge difference between racism and being politically incorrect/racially insensitive. That's all I'm saying. We can all use a little more sensitivity and consideration toward anything we don't understand or haven't experienced. I'm just saying that I've learned there is a vast gap between actual racism and the silly missteps, insensitivity, or politically-incorrect ignorance that are often called "racism." To keep calling everything "racism" makes it a lot easier for dangerous racists and racism to hide.

Re: Brilliant Video Explains the (Racist) Sh*t White Girls Say to Black Girls | AlterNet

There was actually nothing "Racist" in this at all. Just some awkward, comical, silly, uneducated or stereotypical sh*t people say when they don't have a lot of experience outside of their familiar circles. To call this "Racism" takes away from the very real scenarios of racism, which is defined by a stance of hatred and superiority. None of this anywhere near racist.

Re: The Motorola Xoom has sold 100k units since its debut. I don't remember the name of it, but it was a totally cheesy, overacted, silly movie that was made in the "found footage" genre. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good. But yeah, this footage is totally from a released movie. I wish I could remember what the name was. I scanned through the comments and don't see anyone else recognizing it, but if you do, I'd love to be reminded as to what it was called.

Re: I am a FOK

Great "day in the life!" I can understand why my suggestion would trigger such a knee-jerk defense, but my suggestion was a contextual one, and in a different context, I might point out a different aspect of our history or culture. I presumed the context was obvious; sorry. I agree: there are no corner markets on ignorance, bigotry, and cruelty presently or in history, though some groups do tend toward it more than others. It's an embarrassing part of humanity's growing up, but I trust we will eventually mature enough together to want to make a difference together, so hang in there. We'll figure it out.

Re: Ridiculous: PETA Uses Boobs and Babes in Sexist TSA Ad | AlterNet

In matters as desperate as animal liberation, you sometimes have to appeal to the language of those who are holding the power, and in this case, as in most, it is the heterosexual, white males. You wage war to bring about revolution, or you can invite with appealing words and imagery. Abraham Lincoln did it. Martin Luther King, Jr did it. Nearly every revolution had to appeal to those in power in some way before the foot could get in the door to really push through. I applaud PETA for having the guts and courage to explore that ridiculous and limited language, and do what they can to use it. I also think that it's unfortunate that media such as this article has to jump on every opportunity to scrutinize the less-savory language that PETA has to use at times, when there is so much more going on from them that has nothing to do with that angle.

Re: http://nyc.jyonah.com/post/1039000945

Orange is my favorite color!

Re: http://jyonahnyc.tumblr.com/post/852363363

When I left home, I left for similar reasons, but I was just happy to get away; it didn't matter where at the time. Anywhere was "up" from the small town of Peru, Indiana. I moved to Raleigh, NC for a couple of years and it was only when my BF at the time got accepted at a school in NYC did it ever occur to me to move there! Once I stepped foot in NYC, I was "home." I never knew I could love a PLACE the way I could love a person. Since that time, any time I ever leave NYC it has literally hurt me like a dull aching in my heart, the same kind of hurt one might feel when someone dies. The only other place I have loved this much has been Amsterdam, NL. Another place for which my heart now aches. May your adventures here in NYC be as amazing and powerful as mine continue to be!!

PS. "the city that never sleeps" may surprise you in that it actually does! Sure, there are things to do at all hours of the day and night, but for the most part, that reputation comes from the fact that nightclubs and bars don't close until around 5am! I was very surprised to find that NYC actually does "sleep" pretty much like a normal town, except not exactly... you'll see what I mean! lol

Re: http://nyc.jyonah.com/post/1000519980

Oh, I wasn't thinking you meant RIGHT away; I meant that you'll see NYC is not as bike-friendly as your initial enthusiasm reflected. There are a lot of people fighting for more bicycle rights, bicycle lanes, protection, support, etc, but at this point, cars use the bike lines, park in them, block them with doors, etc. NYC is first and foremost a pedestrian-friendly city, then car-friendly, and bikes get the least respect, which really sucks. That being said, the only way that's going to change is if more of us have and use bikes, so once you get settled, I'll be happy to go biking with you and add to the votes for bikes! YAY!

Re: http://nyc.jyonah.com/post/1000519980

You'll have to rethink this once you are here... riding a bike in NYC is extremely dangerous, and it is not very bike-friendly. That being said, I'm getting a bike, too, but before you get one, you should make sure you can get around on foot, first! lol It's a very different world than the residential streets of Oregon.

Re: http://jyonahnyc.tumblr.com/post/854686573

That's my attitude. It's the same relief I felt when my neighbors began embracing me and openly talking about the problems of the 'hood. I didn't c0me to my perspective from speculation, nor without question, so I apologize if I came across as drawing conclusions so broadly. I'm going by experience of living in NYC for over 20 years in many ghettos; from the many conversations I've had with neighbors who have expressed to me the same perceptions I have come to acquire; and from crime statistics that directly reflect my observations.

I thought my speculation about culture vs race helped to clarify that I wasn't speaking in such broad-sweeping gestures. I can't imagine something being exclusive to a race since that's such a superficial illusion, so I was pondering the possibility that countries where violence is a norm in every day life might contribute to what I experience in my neighborhood. But if you didn't live in a ghetto that was 1st or 2nd gen Caribbean, then that shoots down my theory.

I just don't know what it could be, then, if not a cultural default toward violence. I know it's not economy, though, because if that were the case, crime would be rampant in all ghettos, or even limited to ghettos, and it's not.
