Has this primarily been happening since you upgraded to Wordpress 2.7.1? Or should I say have become more noticeably so? I upgraded to 2.7.1 and installed a new theme at the same time recently and was trying to narrow down which was causing the slowdown. I'm going to have to try a few of the other suggestions in the comments but this may have narrowed down a bit what is causing that initial load problem.

Bookmarked that one as well, probably won't have time to play around with them until this weekend but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing which of the two will be exactly what I need. It's amazing such a simple idea for a plugin hasn't been widely produced until recently ;)
