I too find that when people ask me to help them break into the field or want guidance on accelerating their careers, their enthusiasm wanes when they learn that after an hour of my time, I have to be compensated. It is astounding how many people want me to be more invested in their careers than they are!
The answer I now give about attending events and speaking for free is that without compensation I am unable to assist, as me going out of business because I'm giving my talents away, won't do anyone any good!

Re: AIG Cancels Event in Face of Criticism

Does anyone want to explore what the cost of cancelling the meeting on such short notice would have been? Or the expense of employee morale for cancelling something they earned? If the spending was not lavish and the dollars were going to be spent on cancel fees or services, why not go? Had they cancelled the press would be complaining that they just flushed those dollars down the toilet. Those yelling about the loudest clearly have no understanding of cancellation penalties or the purpose and impact of events. No knowledge of a subject and a pulpit from which to preach are a dangerous combination and are often descriptors of those in the media.
