Except the problem posed was to repeatedly add numbers to reach the result for the sum 5x3. Kid did as he or she was told.
Not to mention that you're completely incorrect as this is an instance of when the commutative property CAN be used.

Why can't it also be "Five, times three"?
When learning my 5 times tables, it went like this:
5x1=5
5x2=5+5=10
5x3=5+5+5=15...
and so forth, why is this incorrect? Would you, honestly, prefer to write out:
5x1=5
5x2=2+2+2+2+2=10
5x3=3+3+3+3+3=15?
Because that makes zero sense.

There weren't directions, the question literally just asked him to add multiple times to reach the end result. Which he did. Correctly.
If the question was 2x10.000, would you, honestly now, write out the number 2 ten thousand times? If so, that's pretty sad that you'd sacrifice efficiency for mindlessly following roundabout methods to reach the same result.

The kid, though correct, was marked as wrong because for some reason, when asked to do repeated addition for the sum 5x3, chose to do it efficiently and add the fewest times necessary.

This isn't order of operations though, it's multiplication. Kid is correct. Adding three fives is more efficient than adding five threes. Look at it this way, if it was 2x10.000, would you honestly write out the number 2 ten thousand times?

Dude, it's not an English problem. It's maths. Details matter in higher order maths than 3rd grade addition.
When asked to just use repeated addition to demonstrate 5x3, then yes, this kid is absolutely correct AND efficient in demonstrating the correct result. If the question was to do the same for 2x10.000, would you honestly write out 2 ten thousand times?

You realise that flipping the table 90 degrees makes 3 rows of 5 and 6 rows of 4 though, right? It's the exact same thing, stop making this a language problem, it's a maths problem.

If you read the actual question posed to the kid, it was: Use the repeated addition strategy to solve 5x3=___.
Kid correctly multiplies 5x3 then chooses the most efficient way of demonstrating how many additions it takes to get to that result. It's extremely pedantic to demand that he take the roundabout way of doing things. Nowhere is it mentioning groups of things or anything, it just asked the kid to use repeated addition, something this kid did efficiently and correctly.

@ TicTaek: Lol, that's the first time I've heard anyone comment on Goody's from abroad! Usually they compare to McDonald's or Burger King and it falls short, but I think that McDonald's quality is rubbish compared to Goody's!

Ok, this might be just a teensie few days late but: WOW!! Lang-8 is absolutely fricking amazing!!! I don't know how I got along without it!! I've had it for two days and already I've learned expressions for things I didn't know in Japanese and even a compliment!! It's just soooo easy to write whatever you like and almost immediately you get a message with the correction from another user!! Thank you in the billions Koichi!!!! WOW, this is insane! Europe has the highest average price of any continent?! That's odd, seeing as we're right next to (relatively speaking) Saudi Arabia and all the major oil exporting nations... :s I'm a bit perplexed as to how America can get such low prices... No offence btw, it just doesn't make any logical sense...
*edit* Haha, when you zoom in to the continents it shows tou each country and has FYROM incorporated into Greece! Lol.
