It's the chronic annoyance factor that really bugs me.

For example, I can be here in bed, everything is working fine, everything is quiet.

And with no warning, my lungs eject a huge wad of phlegm up and out of the trach.

Makes reading somewhat adventurous.

Sometimes, I realize what's about to happen and I can get the suction catheter into the trach in time to intercept the payload.

Life's little victories.

It's getting better, but it could get better faster.

Apparently, all the radiation I had can aggravate the whole phlegm thing.

Ugh! The tumors are shrinking, which is good. Turns out they need to shrink a lot more, because right now, I can barely swallow water. Which is unfortunate, as the next round of chemo is in pill form. 4 pills in the morning, 4 in the evening.

But, there is no pain and the only real discomfort is the trach collar.

I swear, the actual cancer is as nothing, compared to the phlegm.

I have not had a decent night's sleep since the tracheotomy was installed, and what it has done for my quality of life has me contemplating suicide from time to time.

To be honest, it SEEMS to be getting better.

Still and all, that's the worst aspect of all this.

Oh, I intend to fight this as long and as hard as I can!

However, one must face facts:

Survival rate one year after diagnosis: 15%

15 out of 100 people are still alive.

And, to be honest, dieing while high on Nitrous had GOT to be the way to go.

Odds are very good that this cancer is going to kill me.

I've already made arrangements to check out on my terms and on my schedule.

I'll hang on as long as my quality of life is acceptable.

When it's no longer worth the effort, time to turn out the lights, post the "First Responders: Do Not Resuscitate. Thank you kindly!", on the apartment door, and away we go, sucking on a balloon full of Nitrous Oxide as the actual lethal agent does its thing.

You know, the actual cancer is both painless and innocuous, except at the end when the tumor completely blocks the trachea.

It's this damned tracheotomy that's making my life miserable. Uncomfortable, somewhat dangerous, every breath must pass through a 6mm tube, a tube easily blocked by slugs of old, dry sticky mucus. That's caught me three times, already. Then there's the lung infection, generating what seems like gallons of the most evil smelling (or so I am told. Due to the disconnect of nose from trachea, I can't smell or taste anything.) phlegm one can imagine.

Periodically, with no advance warning, a gout of phlegm is launched from the lungs and out the breathing port.

So, here I am, armed with a suction catheter, which, if I'm swift enough, allows me to intercept the phlegm as it makes its way up the trach. Caught in time, it all gets suctioned away, still inside the Damned Thing.

As a diabetic, I am pleased to see all the sugar-free goodies one can buy in bulk from Amazon. Nestle's Quik has a sugar free version!

I'm seeing creame filled cupcakes, and even sugarless Oreos.
