To use your "steaming pile of shit and pointing at it" analogy, I'd say By the Book did just that, but then added "It's probably not a good idea to shit in the street" as some sort of punchline. How insightful.

Re: Justifying the Means

I have only played through a few missions in Act II, so I don't know the whole picture yet (I'm on the oil rig), but however Trent's thoughts are on the mark or not in the context of the plot, the mission is outright stupid and completely implausible.

First off, just because you were shot and left behind this starts off WWIII? I know the Ultranationalists are in charge, but Makarov says Russia will rally for a full scale assault on the US. Um, what? Because one American, who was obviously betrayed by his team with the point blank shot in the head, was found on the scene? Was there not a single witness, not a single bit of security camera footage showing Makarov and the other three obviously non-Americans killing civilians? And how about the American obviously not shooting any Civilians (should you choose not to)? And why does the FSB swat-like team allow an ambulance to just waltz on out of the massacre as they approach your dying body at the end of the mission? Lunacy.

Then there's the actual attack. So we're mean to believe that an ACS Unit (whatever that is) on a single downed satellite will allow the Russians to completely subvert America's ENTIRE defense system? Even if you buy into that completely implausible situation, it's obvious the Russians have no intent on sparing civlians in this attack, what with that armored vehicle firing like crazy on homes trekkiing down the street. Why wouldn't the Russians just nuke DC and get it over with? And what is with this cat and mouse mission you go on? What is so strategic about a gas station and a couple chain restaurants in suburban DC?

Re: Will Podcast for Food: the Dennyscast

Burger King now has mini-burgers, ironically called "Burger Shots," invoking memories of the bloody BK parody burger chain, "Burgershot" from the GTA franchise. It seems that some are involved in more than one. At some point, you may be competing with each other for viewership, no? I suppose that all depends on what each of these new things (eat-sleep-game and Rebel FM, Geekbox Radio, Area5.tv, and now Shoe's new venture) end up offering.

I wish the best of luck to all of you, though. And WE MISS YOU CRISPIN!

Re: Life after gaming journalism: The top 6 career paths

Yes, 8-4 is the final stage in Mario. I only know that because Mark MacDonald told me when he gave me his card while I was in Japan. John's beanbag chair provided much comfort from my alcohol influenced evenings. Alas, John was out of town at the time, so I have never met him. I hear lots about him though, mostly terrible terrible things.

Re: Life after gaming journalism: The top 6 career paths

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think The Godfather 2 is on shelves!

Also, could you tell Kraig Kujawa I'll do music for cheap for his games? :P

Re: Sore Thumbs

No offense, but I question the decision to post the ad about asking for writers that contains such terribly obvious grammatical errors. I hear you on the fact that there was a miscommunication somewhere (it happens), but why post it when there are going to be so many who won't be aware of the issue? Personally, I'd never post anything like that until it was corrected. I'm also confused as to why it would need to be a jpeg in the first place.

I have nothing to contribute other than that :P

EDIT: Also, why not demand the person who made it fix the errors?!

Re: Thumbmail, 10/6/08

So is this blog "Sore Thumbs" or "The Sore Thumbs?"

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

I guess the Tecmo thing seems more typical. Everything's better with Crispin. In regards to the Mega Man 9 press kits, my friend Jon did those. He went to used game stores and bought up as many NES cartridges as he could find to make those.

EDIT: I'm sure you guy's know Jon (Gibson), as he's freelanced for EGM several times.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

I can't believe you took one of gaming press's best writers to Sizzler, purely for hilarity of it. But then, I suppose when it comes to Shawn, I wouldn't have expected anything less than something totally absurd for a last dinner.

In all seriousness, as much as I'm lamenting the loss of his weekly intelligence and hilarity, I'm really excited for what he's going to bring to 2K Boston. I'm also thankful I got to call in on the final GFW Radio podcast.

But yeah, Sizzler. One of the great things about Hurricane Katrina (I'm originally from New Orleans) was that it shut down the New Orleans Sizzler for good.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

One can probably guess the publication since there's only a small number of major ones outside the Bay Area. The gall of asking for the limo is rather unbelievable, but also believable at the same time. I do run into people occasionally who have an appalling sense of entitlement, especially in the entertainment industry. It usually comes from those who expect to enter this industry and magically rise to the top without dedication, hard work, and experience.

So, 3-stars fancier than Sizzler would put it at about a 3-star restaurant. Not bad.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

Haha, wow. That underwear story is something else. So is the "asking" for Sony to come take them out to a ballgame. It's amazing how many "professionals" have idiotic lapses of tact and/or common sense. It's been interesting reading these, especially since I've seen a little from all sides, being a freelance contractor in the game industry, but also having been a reader for nearly two decades, and also getting a chance to hear these gaming press stories from this blog, and various people in person.

Re: A story and a contest...

Crispin, you should do some first person first personing of your newly repaired house.

Re: From the perspective of a game publisher

You make a good point, but, like the film industry, day one sales are almost ALL on the marketing department. Marketing is very important, but you don't need to try and use the gaming press as marketing tools. You don't see film studios hounding Roger Ebert to give their films more coverage. The studios have press screenings, then the press reviews them. Then you have marketing campaigns to spread the word. I don't see why it needs to be any different for the gaming industry.

Re: From the perspective of a game publisher

Honestly, from someone who's been a reader of game reviews, and eventually gone into development... the complaints on both sides are BS. You put out a good game and most will praise it as such... you put out a bad game, and most will condemn it as such. Sure there are variables and opinions. Happens in every medium. It's part of the process. Deal with it!

Just do your best and put out a game that's good and speaks for itself. You do that, and people will follow.

There's a reason that there is much anticipation that TGS will reveal Team ICO's latest project.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 4)

If no one covered games until they were available at retail, no one would ever read your review anyway, because whatever site or mag you worked for would be out of business :)

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 4)

You guys should make a SoreThumbCast

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 4)

Edited because I was drunk when I made this post.

Re: First-person first-personing...

You should go about installing some strategically placed health packs and ammo.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 3)

Thanks to Shawn Elliott for pointing out this blog! I was saddened when Shoe and Crispin left. Crispin is one of my favorite gaming press writers. I wish you guys advertised that this gem was here this whole summer!

I would like to contribute with my very brief, but memorable, run-in with Shoe. He probably doesn't remember, but at the 2007 GDC, 1up had a little room/party at the W Hotel Suite Night, and I met Mark MacDonald for the first time (who showed me some fun times when I visited Japan this past June) and he was showing me around, introducing me to people, Then at one point, someone pinches my ass. It was Shoe, thinking I was someone else. He apologized, but I just found it hilarious that I was just pinched by the EGM EiC!

Good times.
