Actually even if Avatar makes most of its money in 2010, it'll still be counted as a 2009 grosser...Look at the lord of the rings movies or I am Legend, they made top grossing lists for their years of release, even though they came out in December and made most of their money the next year.

If Avatar outgrosses every other 2009 release, it'll go on record as the highest grossing film that was released in 2009...thats just how it works.

More great news, Jim, did you check out Avatar's Monday box office? Its quite spectacular. $16 million...its at $93 million after only 4 days, I Am Legend was only at $91 million after 5 days...Avatar's first Monday was more than double I Am Legend's frst Monday. I think any sort of competitive-ness between these two ended Sunday.

Avatar delivered the highest grossing non-summer Monday of all time...not to mention the vast majority of the Monday's that rank higher than it on the list are in fact Memorial Day...a holiday

All due respect, stupidest decision ever. Iron Man 2 is the perfect evolution of 3D's movement into mainstream cinema. We've had an original, non sequel get released in 3D and succeed in a huge way(Avatar)

Now all we need, to really show that 3D can help tremendously at the box office, is a highlt anticipated blockbuster sequel to get released in 3D...I mean, there are plenty of movies capable of breaking the opening weekend box office record WITHOUT 3D(Pirates 2, Spidey 3, and The Dark Knight all did it without 3D) just imagine...pick the next 'possible opening weekend breaker' and then give it the benefit of thousands of 3D capable theaters charging the premium 3D ticket price...and selling out like crazy and etc...the results would be borderline astronomical...Iron Man 2 in 3D would have been the perfect film to do this...box office records could have toppled.

I can't even express my dissapointment in this move, they are literally throwing away a chance to potentially destroy the opening weekend(and many other) box office records. And just imagine how many theaters would equip with 3D once they found out a huge movie like Iron Man 2 was getting released in the format? It truly pisses me off.

I like the idea that they are now having more faith in the project to give them the money to do some new scenes and add extra stuff. The most likely answer as to why is because Avatar has recently proved to be a huge hit film...and it starred Sam Worthington...he's becoming more and more of a name, more and more recognizable, and they think he'll help draw in a fair share of moviegoers...so they think its worth the extra cash to try and make the movie better.

And the thougths about going 3D are for the exact same reason, Avatar has just proven that a big live action film can pull blockbuster numbers with 3D...so they figure if they've got time, they should consider making a big event film like Clash 3D, because then you get the extra ticket prices. I imagine the conversion could be done, its just as much a matter of money as time, I'm sure at a casual pace, it takes about a year...but maybe with two conversion companies working around the clock on the conversion...its possible to get it converted in time. The only dilemma would be 'How to Train Your Dragon' opening on the same weekend...which would make me think a 3D release would result in a delay of the film.

As soon as a highly anticipated, big-time blockbuster SEQUEL gets the 3D treatment, box office records will be crushed...look at it this way, The Dark Knight made $158.4 million from regular and Imax(2D) theaters...imagine if it was coming out in summer 2010, or even summer 2009, and had loads of 3D equipped theaters charging premium prices at its disposal, and they were selling out as much as its 2D theaters did...it would have absolutely passed Titanic at the domestic box office...The closest thing we have to a blockbuster sequel that we KNOW is getting a 3D release is Tron Legacy...but that might as well be an original release, Tron has a devoted, but I think relatively small fanbase. Its not going to get the type of anticipation and hype a sequel like Iron Man 2 would...

I Am Legend opened with $77 million and finished with $256 million domestically...thats a solid multiplier...about the same thing that happened with Star Trek...

I wouldn't be so quick to assume an $80 million opening weekend, its a fair chance, but I am Legend had a $30 million opening day and only a $77 million opening, factor in the rain, and I'd say a solid $70-$75 should be guarenteed. It could very well end up holding well in these two days and doing $80, but I'm not positive.

But I do agree, the movie was excellent and will do great over the next few weeks, if it can make it past this week and Holmes, its pretty smooth sailing, especially since there will be no 3D or Imax competition for quite some time.

Great news, really great news...I use to always have the doubt of 'is Avatar going to have a good opening weekend, how good will it be'

But at this point, I think we can all just chill out and accept that its going to hit, no matter how big it is or isn't, Avatar has the anticipation and is going to be a hit.

Great news, its as many of us expected Jim. I remember way back in the day when you and me would comment saying we expected some theaters to actively seek out 3D installations just for Avatar...and it looks like we were right.

Someone over on the AMZ message boards said that the Avatar release got delayed until January 1st in Georgia(the country) because the first 3D equipped theater is going to open to debut Avatar...pretty cool news

Yes! I personally have no interest in that story or its concepts, or much about it, and personally think the Fantastic Voyage remake should be his next blockbuster if Avatar 2 isn't, if he must do The Dive, then so be it, but I'm not very stoked for that.

I'm one who is of the opinion that Battle Angel will never be made by Cameron, at least not directed...it just seems like it'll never happen...and of all of the projects he is associated with, from Avatar 2-3, to the rumor about his interest in a Forbidden Planet remake, to this reported involvement in this Doomsday Protocol movie...Battle Angel and The Dive are the films that interest me the least, personally.

Anyone know if the new Kong attraction will be making its way to Universal Orlando? I live in Florida and make my way to Universal Studios every few years...I was ticked when they took down the old Kong attraction and would LOVE to see this new one find its place there.

Well, in the trailers and in the first featurrette released, we already saw glimpses and moments where Neytiri's breasts were exposed...I mean, you could see them, they were there, whether the MPAA decided to consider the breif exposure of CGI alien breasts as 'Nudity' or not is their business, but they are definitely there, I mean...there are screen caps...

I figured this would be the rating, no way would it be R, and no way would all of the Na'vi nudity allow for a PG...so once again Cameron gets away with female nudity(albeit alien) in a PG-13 movie.

Great stuff, really impressive. 'War' is the picture perfect representation of an awesome battle theme. And I have to say 'I See You' does sound like it has potential to it, although its clip was only 30 seconds, and I couldn't really get a good taste of it.

Gotta say, I think everything about this descision is a good idea. I'm not really a fan of Lewis or overly familar with her work, but 'Bleeding Love' is a song that is so catchy its not even funny, its not my type of music, but I have to admit its one of those very catchy songs.

I think it was a good descision to do an original song for Avatar, just because it allows Avatar and things associated with it to permeate more of the media, they've got the toys, the figures, the games, the film, and now the song...and having the team that helped make 'My Hear Will Go On' such a hit coming together again for Avatar is only a good sign.

I think between the fact that this has just a bit over a year before its supposed to be finished and released, and the fact that its release date is the exact same as the sure to be 3D blockbuster behemoth Tron Legacy...its my opinion that Yogi Bear will either be pushed back or moved up.

I remember when you first posted about this, and going back to the discussion you and me started to have about wondering if the total amount of S3D(Digital 3D and Imax 3D included) could reach the estimated 2,800 locations by the time Avatar came out.

I think if these Technicolor film based S3D screens can get a bit of a roll out, it may prove to be the missing piece in getting the market to that point by the time of Avatar's release. I think A Christmas Carol might be able to break a total S3D location count of 2,000 provided it gets more or less 'all' of the available Digital 3D and Imax 3D locations...so if this Technicolor solution can start getting a rollout, that coupled with the Digital 3D and Imax 3D rollout could work out well for Avatar. Because I'm sure a film based S3D showing of a movie still qualifies for the premium price you get with a Digital S3D showing. Its good that even Technicolor is aware that this is more or less an interim S3D solution...and potentially just what the doctor ordered to help Avatar be shown in 3D at as many locations as possible

Jeesh, I could have swore I'd looked into that before, but oh well, this isn't the first time its happened, I remember people were saying Land of the Lost and Astro Boy were in 3D...but oh well, I wasn't planning on seeing it, it just sucks I didn't realize this sooner.

Yeah, we can stay optimistic together, and its not like there aren't movies like A Christmas Carol and, to a lesser extant, Planet 51 to justify installations in the meantime before Avatars arrival.

But even so, I think even with the current combined number of Imax 3D and Digital 3D screens, the domestic market is at a pretty good place and is more or less ready for a 3D blockbuster tentpole like Avatar.

And considering most movies get 3-5 weeks on average before another 3D movies opens and splits the screens, Avatar is going to have an exceptional amount of time to grow and get the full benefits of the format. Beuty and the Best being moved from February 2010 to a TBA 2011 date means that Avatar will not have any Digital 3D or Imax 3D movie opening to contest screens until Alice in Wonderland opens on March 5th.

And regarding your estimates for Avatar's opening weekend...I kind of pride myself in being fairly well versed in box office trends and the like, and I think your opening weekend predictions are solid. I think it could definitely take I Am Legend's record for biggest December opening($77 million) and it could break $100 million. On the high end I like to hope it could beat Spider-man for the biggest opening weekend for a non-sequel(spidey has it at $114 million)

I'm confident that if the 2nd trailer gets a reception as big as or bigger than the teaser, and if they ramp up the television ads and etc. and if pre-release reviews are solid...Avatar could be a big performer

Jim, question. I didn't follow the THR link, so this may be a question I shouldn't have to ask...but when they say 2700 theaters, are they talking domestically? As in North America? And if so, is that including Digital 3D and Imax 3D equipped theaters?

Because in North America, we've yet to have a movie open in 1800 total 3D equipped theaters, so for Avatar to hit a total of 2700 3D equipped theaters, about 1000 theaters, give or take a bit, would have to equip with 3D(Digital or Imax) by the time of its release. I'm not saying thats impossible, but it'd be hard
