I find it easy for a fluent Twitter-user like myself to pick out which other members are using the platform for the benefit of their personal brand.Twitter may also allow candidates to showcase their sense of humor, quirks, or niches which they never knew could be beneficial to an employer.

I was further enlightened on how one can harness the power of social media to get hired in a recent visit from Christopher Dessi (@cdessi) to my school, Marist College of Poughkeepsie, NY. The dynamic lecture was titled, "How the F*ck Can Social Media Get You A Job?" (more information can be seen here http://bit.ly/fHqj56).

I believe that one could easily compare a RT of personal work to a LinkedIn recommendation. Twitter conversations can be just as effective as LinkedIn group discussion boards, but allow for a broader scale of contributers.

In today's world, I feel one's social media enthusiasm and etiquette can be determining factors in the hiring process.

Re: The Rules of Social Media Engagement

Thank you for this Brian.

I am a student graduating from Marist College in May, and in hoping to snag a job in social media management I have been following your tweets regularly. It is just recently that the PR and Comm curricula have come to touch on social media. I was lucky enough to have a professor whom understands the power of social media, and took time to look into social media strategy and policies, as far as drafting one for our institution.

Through my interaction with my institution's leaders in social media, as well as young professionals in the field, and in launching platforms for the school's Communication and The Arts program, I have found that being personable, consistent and helpful (#2) is the most important goal of maintaining an effective social media presence. As is in many facets of life, you get what you give.

Re: Corporate Blogging: Five Steps to Intelligent PR Through PR Intelligence - SocialTimes.com

Thank you Tom for this piece, very insightful. I'm just a PR student fascinated with the world of social media and blogging. Below are my comments...

1. Always attack audiences that already exist, especially when using social media. It is exponentially more difficult to build a community around your content if you are doing so from scratch.

2. Looking ahead is always great. Media wants tomorrow's big thing yesterday, so any look into future content gives your blog brownie points.

3. Social Media and blogging can often be dismissed as frivolous when it does not blatantly share a bottom line with those whom you are trying to connect with. The bottom line is that the media want what you've got. Your blog can make the delivery of what they want easier, so avoid being passive.

4. Numbers are a powerful thing. Leverage statistics however you can to seek out your most valuable and enthusiastic media contacts.

5. Evaluation is the last step of any good public relations campaign, and it is even more important for a blogging platform. Your measurements are useless unless you utilize them to continue to enhance your blog and nurture relationships between you and your best media contacts, as well as creating new media relationships.

Re: Is Twitter the New LinkedIn? - SocialTimes

I agree that LinkedIn is still the most appropriate platform for evaluating job candidates, but with the constant evolution and acceptance of social media, this may change in the future.

Many students are incorporating their Twitter feeds into their LinkedIn profiles as well as posting their LinkedIn profiles in their Twitter bios, so each could be ancillary to the other depending on what the viewer is interested in. I feel this can only optimize one’s presence if both accounts are used for personal branding and not social squawking.

In regards to the title, the institution did not promote the lecture under that name. It was used by the presenter as a tool to arouse his audience’s interest. He successfully leveraged his knowledge of the audience as well as other presentation tactics (such as humorous photos and audience involvement) to keep the attention of a theater full of students, not an easy task! To not insult the lecturer’s credibility, he cautioned about the use of inappropriate language and content on social media platforms and in the business environment.

But I do agree that some young people do not yet grasp the concept of appropriate and respectful language, in both gaining credibility in an online space as well as reaching a larger audience.

Thank you for your comments.

Re: The Power of Reputation: The Brian Solis Effect

Such a great infographic featured in "The 6 Pillars" - currently hanging in my cube. When you start a business, what must lead the way should be your own interest in or love for whatever it is you want to do. Loving what you do miraculously attracts all the necessary resources, people and opportunities. You definitely don’t need money to start. Bootstrapping will stimulate your creativity and that is worth much more than money anyway.

Re: Social Telemarketing

Good article!! it shares such awesome knowledge about social telemarketing and also it adds idea between social telemarketing and telemarketing to the readers..

Re: Pay-per-lead Telemarketing can be just the ticket!

As i read the article, i think pay per lead telemarketing designed to create sales opportunities for independent business consultants.
