Rodriguez treads on sacred ground with some of these writers/songs and is so comfortable with them there - it's amazing. It made me go back to her previous CD's that I had kept but not really given a fair shot too. Honestly, her physical beauty worked against her with me - I just didn't get the Chip Taylor pairing and assumed (very wrongly) that she was a puppet or creation of his. Her's is an important voice in this patchwork quilt of American music today. She doesn't adhere to musical border's of any one kind really - but borrows key trace elements of all to create a style & sound all her own. In doing so, she honors the songs (whether her own or others) and the music like nobody's business. I was wrong to have dismissed her earlier - will watch & listen more closely going forward. She could be the "Lucinda Williams" or "Emmylou Harris" of her generation and the quality of her three solo records is already on par or above any three of theirs. She's an equal of the writers' & artists' she covers here. This album feels & sounds like it was built to last. I suspect I'll be enjoying it for years to come. I almost never feel that way these days...

Re: CD Review: Various Artists, “Playing for Change: Songs Around the World Deluxe Edition”

yep, i'm pissed. i hate record companies doing this shit. i got so burned by columbia/bruce springsteen that i didn't buy his new album because i feel like i bought the Seeger session thing 3 f*cking times (and it wasn't that good the first time). if they are gonna do two versions - they know it up front AND should offer consumers a CHOICE. instead in this case - they are making me feel like a VICTIM and now less inclined to make this a holiday gift selection (as I would have easily before) this season. These jerks loss is Seven Worlds Collide's gain as that's the other cool record like this that I wanna hip others too. Now it'll probably come out with a "special edition". This is the kinda greedy bullshit that encourages file sharing and dancing on the graves of greedy label mother f*ckers. You think because a record is for a good cause and "touchy feely" that the label involved won't rape you and then...they do.

Re: OMGRICK

It's not the title track of their new ALBUM that comes out Tuesday, there is no title track to March Forth. It is however the first single/video and it's cool huh? Thanks for blogging about KaiserCartel. They play a SOLD OUT show at Joe's Pub in NYC tomorrow night. Start touring to support the record in Philly on 6/27 - FREE show at World Cafe Live (upstairs) at 1 pm.
