Those abortions benefit babies, as they allow their mothers to devote more time and money to them.

Rape, incest, pregnant teenagers, and women whose resources are stretched so thin they can barely feed the children they do have, aren't cute. Women being forced to give birth and raise an unwanted child, for whatever reason, aren't cute. Women who wanted deperately to have a child, and then, due to medical issues, had to abort that fetus, are also not cute. What all of these not cute people are entitled to, however, is a safe and legal medical procedure performed in a timely fashion, and autonomy over their own bodies.

Let's leave cute out of it, eh?

Amanda, I know you already know all that. But this is where the conversation goes, beyond "babies are cute."

Re: MY BIG GAY NEW YORK TRIP by amanda fucking palmer

Amanda dear, I can't help but notice that in 2 of your recent trips to NYC, you've met up with Viggie. The sound quality was amazing. Delilah was hopelessly beautiful. There's something fantastic about the world that lets me in DC watch Jason play an accordion while flying over the Atlantic via your webcast in London. I love it so much.

Also, hope you found your iPhone!!!!!!

Love,
Mary Anne

Re: If It Bleeds, It Leads (& then runs weeping to the bathroom to change its tampon)

Maybe on some level, we're all doing what we can with what we've got. It is, I think, much more important for general world goodness that you're making music and creating art and pushing envelopes and bringing joy to people, because not everyone can do that. I'll sit here and bust my ass working too many hours for a human rights nonprofit, and sometimes cry about child soldiers in Uganda for both of us, because I can't do what you do. I can do what I do, which is to know about things on the other side of the world, care about them, and try to make them better. Nobody can do everything. Also, if you're ever actually hiring for that minister of information position, I really want the job.

PS Your and Kayla's version of Hell was FANTASTIC, mistakes and all. Highlight of my work-filled weekend.

Re: the (actual) news

I work for an international human rights org, so its part of my job to keep up with the news in certain parts of the world. I'm pretty tuned in, at least internationally, in that my office has a "librarian" whose job it is to send out news articles pertinent to the work we're doing. Domestically, if its not local news via washingtonpost.com or similar, my main source of information is The Daily Show. It seriously needs more credit than just a few points. This makes for an odd dichotomy, as I better understand the pirates in Somalia than I do the healthcare debate here.

As for where, in addition to the lovely librarian at work, I swear by BBC News' website. In case of emergencies, CNN.com or Washingtonpost.com. I don't think I've ever watched news on TV on my own. I have bought, personally, ONE newspaper in my life, and it was an Obama Inauguration issue. All internet, all the time.

All of that isn't why I'm commenting, though. This is:

Your "we're not built to know about everyone dying everywhere" idea is really hitting home with me right now. I'm in the middle of writing a grad school paper on child soldiers. I keep crying as I'm doing the research for the paper - its too heartbreaking to read about. I really wonder about the individual capacity for compassion, and what to do when its all too much to deal with. I guess unplugging is an option - but if you're unplugged, then you can't do anything about it. Or at least, you can't even try to make an impact if you don't know what's going on. And I can't not try to help. But that's my own conundrum.

I hope you enjoyed DC! If you walked from the newseum to the national press club, there's a good chance you walked by my office ......

Re: It's pretty clear that Anna Wintour has a crush on me.

Awesome. Not at you, but at Sarkozy. Burqas are superficial. They're arresting to look at, and make a lot of people uncomfortable. But, as I said on Jezebel the other day, its the deprivation of the rights of the woman under the burqa that is the real pervasive problem in society. I think the headscarf ban was ridiculous and xenophobic, but there is a MAJOR difference between hijab and burqa. Its also a question of choosing. If a woman in France is treated equally by her family and community, and she chooses to wear a burqa? Fine, no problem. If someone else is forcing her to wear it? That's fucked up. And that will weaken French society far more than clothing ever will.

After rereading - I didn't know that women were targeted for violence because they're wearing burqas. But making a woman take off a burqa so she won't be a victim of racism is like mandating girls give up miniskirts and drinking to prevent rape. Change the attitude of the attacker, not the victim.

Re: l.e.s. francophile

Grey gays in a garden! gorgeous.

Re: l.e.s. francophile

Fantastic photo.
