WOW. Talk about the odds... But again, it's HIS memory..something HE can treasure for his life and share with his family and friends. I don't particularly care. I wasn't there. lol.

Re: It Didn't Happen Unless There's A Selfie by Lori Lewis | Merge | AllAccess.com

Personally I think selfies are boring. The only people usually interested in them ... are the people in them.. I don't care to see other's selfies (I had to scroll past all the example selfies you posted). Maybe I'm just hard to impress. I generally don't take them either (disclaimer: my current avatar can be considered a selfie, as I did take it myself. But I think I've taken a grand total of 5). It's a vain activity to be engaged in. / #myownpersonalopinion : )

However, as a radio brand I can understand having to deliver something to your fans. A deejay that just got to hang out with Bono or Keith Richards (or insert your star du jour) would want to share such a moment with the station's and his/her own followers, and rightfully so.. Or on a more local level, if you are at a remote event and you want to show off your client, then THAT would be a great moment to show your client that you care and get your client to engage with your audience.. But are station's and deejays doing this?

Re: Memo to CEOs: Go Social or Go Home

I disagree. I am not a CEO, but I'm not sure there really is any value for a CEO of a Fortune 500 to add social to his/her daily tasks unless it is something they are truly interested in (or unless they are CEO of a social media, or any media, company).

How much time would you recommend a CEO spend tweeting and posting on Facebook or G+? They have meetings, conference calls, conventions, summits, seminars to attend already. There is a reason why CEO's do not take calls or even emails from consumers. It takes too much time. Why Tweet with them?

I also imagine many CEO's that have not embraced social do not want to post something the Twittersphere would deem inappropriate. We've seen what kind of backlash can happen, even when an innocent mistake is made. There is an etiquette that needs to be learned in order to be accepted, and it can be confusing (and time consuming). For example: IS THIS IS YELLING, or just adding EMPHASIS.

The CEO's that have embraced social, enjoy the platform. So it is easier for them to include it in their routine. For new companies, younger CEO's (< 40) and for future CEO's it is more "important" because the new generation of leaders have already embraced social as a means of communication. It is their telephone. They are making social THE standard for communication. It is already a part of their routine.

The "old guard" can hire people to keep them informed of social trends, customer attitudes, etc. Why fix what isn't broken? Personally, I am not more apt to like a company more because their CEO Tweets about the products his/her company makes, or posts pix of the supper he is having with his/her family at some fancy restaurant. However, I would be impressed if a CEO responded to me, but it would not necessarily make me more loyal to the brand.

Thanks for allowing me to respond!

Re: It's Not The Mistake -- It's How We Behave In Recovery

But, what if their response was authentic? Also, keep in mind it doesn't matter how "real" or "authentic" you are, the haters will hate. As for the authenticity of being authentic, who gets to decide what is and what isn't? I don't think there is an answer to that...just sayin' :)

Re: How to Use Social Media to Tie Your Marketing to Your Return on Investment

I never buy anything through social media. I'm sure once your friends are sorted on Facebook, you will be able to add or remove them from any lists that Facebook thought they should go into. It's not about control, it's about ease of use for the consumer. It's a good start for people that already have hundreds of friends to sort. Many people don't know how to use the list feature. I've been using it since it was implemented. G+ made it easier to understand, now Facebook is reacting. I actually just reorganized my lists on Facebook. I hope their update doesn't mess with lists I've created. Otherwise, it should be a good feature.

Re: Shareaholic – A Labor of Love

Someone's got some creativity there at Shareaholic! This give you and opportunity to expose them to a sponsor. And reduces the free ads given to Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for participating in the discussion!

Re: Taking A Page Out Of Social Media by Charlie Profit | Consultant Tips for Radio ... …

I agree. All I can say is that the station's that do put the effort in will win. It's like that with the on-air presence, promotions and the music played. There are some that are doing it right. I'm sure we can agree that listeners already have jukeboxes in their pockets, with mp3 players and smart phones. So we have to give them a reason to listen! And we have to show them we are hip with a great website that is socially connected, with regularly updated videos/pix and blogs. Give them an amazing sponsor offer, not just a banner ad with 10% off. Keep it minimalist for best effect! Too many ads, especially those with Flash will push listeners away. Take note of what happened to MySpace! And look at Facebook's minimalist look. Who's winning? (Rhetorical question as I know I am preaching to the choir, but for the benefit of the readers...)

Thanks for your comment and adding to the discussion!

Re: Taking A Page Out Of Social Media by Charlie Profit | Consultant Tips for Radio ... …

Nathan, thanks for your comment.

I have to disagree with you. The most important place on the internet is the place you control. While we have some control on Facebook and Twitter, we do not have ultimate control. And for all the effort and energy placed on these properties without any compensation to the station seems ludicrous to me.

In the beginning it seemed to make sense to point people directly to your social networking presence, but it is actually less confusing to use one page on your own website to be the "intersection" to get people to those properties. And with new networks being added to the foray (like G+) and some closing shop (like lesser know Yahoo property MyBlogLog), it makes sense to have ONE address that does not change. I am not saying to not participate on the social networks, I am saying bring listeners to your own website FIRST and then let them choose which network they want to follow you on. You can add widgets to your website to integrate the experience. Besides, once connected on Facebook or Twitter they will bypass your website unless you do give them a reason to come back. But by sending them straight to Facebook or Twitter you completely miss the opportunity to show them "something" on your website, for example, a sponsor's ad! And yes, your landing page on Facebook can also be another (or the same) sponsor. You have to think outside of the box, and think about your sponsors! Sending listeners directly to Facebook/Twitter/G+ and you miss the opportunity to expose them to a PAYING sponsor. As a sponsor, I would be upset.

You use the party analogy...okay. Your website should be where the party starts! Then the audience decides if they want to go upstairs to the lounge or downstairs to the club. Your website should be the portal! Post fun station videos, pictures, blogs on your website for new regular content. Even solicit your listeners to regularly send stuff in for the webmaster to post. And while your audience is visiting your website to get to the party, you give them something from an advertiser for stopping by, like a 50% off voucher (Get a different sponsor daily!). Give your sponsors something, give the listeners something, then you have a recipe for success. You then have given the listeners a reason to return to your website as the portal to your social networking properties. They'll want to come and see what's new, and what other sponsor is giving a 50% voucher. (Today's social page sponsor is ABC. Get a 50% off coupon when you visit) Think 50% off is crazy? Groupon and LivingSocial don't think so. And they'll gladly take market share from radio.

You have to stop thinking about just connecting with listeners, and start thinking about connecting listeners to advertisers. You are already connected to the listeners! The sponsors are waiting for you to connect them with the listeners. That's why they pay the stations bills. Now you have a formula.

Thanks again for contributing!

Re: Atlas Shrugged Movie (Official Site) - Theaters

It would be interesting to see how the people in Quebec respond to the movie.

Re: Chris Brogan on Social Media Strategy for Radio – Part 1

I hope Mark doesn't mind but I'll share a link to an article I wrote for Radio Ink last September that addresses your question, and is still relevant today. To be honest, I don't think anyone with any sense has ever been insulted for being offered such wonderful sentiments. And we should all be proud of our heritage and anxious to share our Faith.

Re:

By doing these packages, you get many of the channels you want plus a few others you may not. It's easy to scan past the channels you don't like. I understand the pickings can seem slim often, and there are lots of duplicated channels especially on cable. As the Internet becomes more prevalent, and content providers start delivering through the Internet you will have easier access and more choices; although "better choices" remains to be seen. But definitely you will have more control. Something called the "sezmi" is positioned to change the way we access our favorite shows.
