I am so worn out on this sign issue, and still have another meeting to get thru tomorrow evening. Off to yoga now for some hopeful peace of mind...
Let's connect soon!
Celia

Re: Kensington’s “Toxic” Sign Divides Community

Interesting that a 64-year resident wants to get rid of the wonderful, original old sign and replace it with a NEW one, and the 17-year "newbie" resident wants to save the historic OLD sign.

To set the record straight, the residents were never given a ballot option to save the sign, only a choice of New sign A or New sign B. It's misleading to imply they voted for new vs. old.

I, like many, felt blind-sided by this plan to remove the simple sign that had become an icon welcoming all who lived in the area, as well as representing our community to the city, and replace it with an expensive, elaborate gateway version. Our sign was one of only two original community signs left in San Diego.

By writing a designation report I simply accelerated the 45-year review by the Historical Resources Board. The same 45-year review the sign was due to receive when a permit to remove it was applied for. The HRB voted unanimously to designate the sign as a historic resource. Board members were surprised to hear it wasn't already designated and disappointed that the Association, as owners and caretakers of the sign, hadn't recognized its value and were instead intending to fully replace it.

People all have their opinions, and obviously what's a treasure to some is just an old piece of junk to others. I make no apologies for giving the community a chance to save our sign, I'm only sorry that its value is so expendable to some and that we are wasting precious time and money that should be spent getting the sign back up to welcome us to Kensington, whether we've lived here one, twenty, sixty or more years, or are just coming for a visit.
