Grocery stores would like to sell wine on Sunday, but they still make money if they don't because they have plenty of other products to sell. Liquor stores absolutely do not want to have to staff up and open on Sundays when they won't be able to sell spirits, the source of more than half their revenue in most cases, plus they've gotten used to the day off. But if groceries can sell wine, the liquor stores will feel compelled to compete, even if it's not a profitable proposition.
