I think I meant to say that the act of entering and paying for sex was (except when it wasn't) not necessarily about transactional sex but also about a safe space for libidinous desires. Which...could go either way, although I think pro-bathhouse activism;s emphasis on the retention/importance of that *space* in which diverse sexual desires could take place maybe is what is making me pause.

I will be interested when someone who knows what they are talking about answers. But I would say maybe not explicitly (I don't really know why- perhaps because I see the bathhouse as a space in which many many types of interactions- some non-sexual took place and not necessarily simply as a space one paid and entered to experience sex- Like a really sexy community center)? I think though that you maybe could tie them together in terms of defense of public sex, casual sex, exposing morality, contesting the accepted narratives of HIV transmission etc. But I don't know in detail the history of the activism in totality so my understanding of the bathhouse could be way off.

yeah, but also i think there is some serious non-knowledge there. like no coltrane mining and cellphones are linked ot rape, as is war, and the prison industrial system. fundementally i would like everyone to jsut accept that we all have a role in perpetuating practices that lead to oppression- from what we eat, consume etc.
and for the rest of it, people just dont really like to own up to their place in the system.

I thought it was pretty simple? If the intent does not break with the history or seeks to perpetuate it then it is an issue. Movies being a medium are tricky- like saying slave codes were written in english lets abolish it, instead of let's be aware of the origins and thus critique the use of language when it mimics that dispossessing, oppressive dynamic.
But then we all have to have access to the same historiographical ledger?
I don't know, bad example really. Case by case is the best scenario?

I have no idea! I first saw it in the Daily Mail and all the reports seem to be copies of each other so I am even a little confused as to how legitimate/non-sensationalized it is.

exactly, it's always better to go with the please explain and rationalise your ignorance, then they are on the defensive. Adn I feel you on the last bit I just had an argument last week about 'evil lesbians' in whcih I had to just go one more word and you cna leave my house. It was satisfying.

oh no, i don't think you have to apologize..I enjoyed your post and certainly understand the kinds of frustration it comes from- also nobody should feel like the feminist label is the be all, end-all of caring about this shit. I think the line is having issues with some articulations of feminism/the label and invalidating/ignoring systemic and interpersonal gender inequality. I don't think you've done that. (totally unsolicited personal opinion about shit you probably already know/may not apply)

It is amazing right? I was awed when I saw it (through tumblr actually- Daliya who also has amazing art and feminist stuff, although I think she's on a break right now). I'm not sure about the updating thing- it might be over maybe (I found the book at a second hand store!)but i'm always checking in for new stuff by him.
