You mentioned that you have "read nothing in the Kirkland Reporter about the local impact of all the traffic that will be generated by people avoiding the tolls on the 520 bridge." However, you commented on a story we covered in February regarding the new Kirkland Transit Center, which is part of the city's plan to mitigate tolls: http://www.pnwlocalnews.com...

At that time, city officials were trying to identify key locations and were taking baseline counts. In addition, the city was planning to help move more cars through Kirkland by syncing up stop lights. Using a $1.8 million Fedral Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant, the city was developing a scope of work to install an Intelligent Transit System (ITS). City officials said they would be seeking professional consulting services over the next few months. City officials also said the city would be able to mitigate traffic more effectively once they obtain more real-time information on the increased traffic after tolling begins.

You pose important questions and we will continue to keep readers updated on the city's efforts to mitigate tolling impacts, including more information about the consulting services and the real-time information on increased traffic once tolling begins.

As far as this article, I think our Staff Writer Peyton Whitely did an excellent job of outlining the technical aspects of tolling and all the complications the billing company faces. How many articles have you read in any other publication or media outlet that has attempted to do this? It's investigative journalism at its finest and hardly "an overly detailed PR piece."

I am the editor of the Kirkland Reporter. My thoughts are with the Hanson family during this difficult time.

I spoke with Kirkland Police Department Allan O'Neil this afternoon and he said the case is still under investigation. This means that the department will not release any details regarding the incident right now. Therefore, we were unable to find out the answers to the questions you ask, Kirklandparent. It is unfair to blame this incident on "irresponsibility" or even jump to conclusions when we don't know the full story. When the facts of the case are all laid out and the KPD provides us with case documents, then and only then would it be appropriate to discuss the circumstances surrounding the incident and we will be sure to explore those issues, if necessary, in a future update. Thank you for your interest in the story and we'll keep you updated as more details become available.

In fact, Evergreen Hospital is also one of our advertisers and in the same issue (March 11), the hospital ran a full-page ad on page 11, and the union ran a full page ad on page 13 in the Kirkland Reporter. We noted the disclaimer in the story because the union advertisement relates to this story. The ad points out that "Evergreen is subcontracting key services at its new Redmond Emergency Room, including those we rely on for infection control."

We publish each and every political letter to the editor written by a Kirkland resident - democrat or republican, or anything in between. I am the Editor of the Kirkland Reporter. Thank you, Sarzo and psyawaog, for your comments. To elaborate, Steven Pyeatt is a long-time Kirkland resident who initially contacted the Kirkland Reporter after we published a Jan. 6 story.
He asked the Reporter if we would be interested in helping him mobilize the community to get Leonid Milkin's home rebuilt and of course we said yes! A couple weeks later, we ran another story, "Man mobilizes Kirkland community to rebuild home ..."
Very soon after, Michele Yousef took the lead on the project and has been very instrumental in getting the project nearly finished. I agree, psyawaog, Yousef does deserve Volunteer of the Year award. She has done an incredible job rallying residents and businesses and sending the Reporter countless e-mails and phone calls keeping us informed on the project as well.
Everyone's contributions to the project, big or small, deserve recognition, from Steven Pyeatt's initial desire to help Leonid, to Yousef's greater involvement and to all the wonderful volunteers who have helped rebuild the home, and businesses, like Sarzo's, that have donated material to honor Sgt. Leonid Milkin and his beautiful family he lost.

I am the Editor of the Kirkland Reporter. Thank you, Dave, for your interest in this story. The Reporter strives for unbiased reportage. In this case, we use the word "allegedly" to demonstrate that the Criminal Justice Training Commission (not the Reporter) accused Charles Evans of using law enforcement databases to spy on his wife.
Also, a state oversight board unanimously found "clear, cogent and convincing evidence" that Evans "engaged in conduct that would constitute a crime committed under color of authority as a peace officer." Using the word "allegedly" reinforces the presumption of innocence until he is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
We also showed great care in our neutrality towards Leslie Evans. As stated in the story, the prosecutors described her as mentally unstable. Therefore, the prosecutors have alleged this instability (not the Reporter). News organizations like the Reporter will often use the term "allegedly", or specify the source of the allegation. Both ways allow news organizations to remain neutral.
Finally, the fact that Leslie Evans was convicted of second-degree arson and her mental state is relevant to the story, as Charles Evans claims her mental state is one of the reasons why he was concerned to begin with.

I am the Editor of the Kirkland Reporter and the person who wrote this story. In response to "Discoprincess," I went to the school district to try and find out the whole story. Because we're dealing with minors, the LWSD cannot give out information without the parent's or student's consent. So it was difficult to get the other side of the story without knowing who the alleged party was.

I would also like to point out that the intent of the story was to show how one student's case relates to a district wide issue.

Thanks, and by the way, I double checked and it turns out the sprinkler system WAS activated, which prevented the fire from spreading beyond the area. So now we know the system works ;)

I am the Editor of the Kirkland Reporter who wrote this story. Guesser, you bring up some good questions. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, so officials are uncertain at this time what caused the fire.
The sources I spoke with confirmed that all fire procedures were followed properly to ensure the resident's safety. If you will note in the story the quote from Stuart Ostfeld, general manager of Merrill Gardens, "All of our safety systems and procedures worked the way they were designed to ..." The facility has a sprinkler system, which was in working order at the time of the fire. Also, the laundry room door was closed properly, which helped to contain the fire, according to fire officials.
Both fire and Merrill Gardens officials confirmed that the facility has the highest quality protection, from the automatic fire alarm that went off at the first detection of smoke, to the sprinkler system that would have gone off, had staff not responded so quickly.
Given that there were no damages or injuries, it seems to me that Merrill Gardens staff responded well and there should be no cause for alarm. Thank you for reading the Kirkland Reporter.
