The tips offered here are helpful only for the mildest forms of anxiety. Genuine help for flight anxiety is available so don’t give up when you find what is offered here doesn’t work for you. Most of the people I have worked with tried hypnotism and distraction and relaxation. When they got no relief they thought they were impossible to help. Not so. This problem can be resolved by adequate treatment.

Re: How to stop a panic attack

Unfortunately, none of these tips are useful. When in a state of panic, a person is completely overwhelmed. Anything they try to do to get out of the overwhelm only increases the overwhelm. This is not new information. The famous Australian psychologist Claire Weekes explained this 40 years ago. What a person can do is, after the panic attack train the part of the brain that can memorize a step-by-step procedure to use the beginning of a panic attack as a trigger to start a psychological process that activates the calming system (parasympathetic nervous system). I have taught over 10,000 clients who could not fly due to panic how to do this so they can fly without risk of panic.

Re: Long Haul Flying: 5 Tips for Anxious and Scared Flyers

I hear you and I’m glad you are doing OK with breathing exercises. It’s just that I have witnessed countless people on the “graduation flights” of a fear of flying course in full-blown panic while doing their breathing exercise. These exercises can help a person stay distracted but if distraction is not enough - and it is never enough during turbulence - panic results. Seeing how poorly breathing worked I kept looking for an effective solution, and found it. It is detailed in my new book, Panic Free.

Re: Long Haul Flying: 5 Tips for Anxious and Scared Flyers

What you are saying about breathing is incorrect. The heart rate is slowed ONLY while breathing in, NOT when holding your breath, and not in breathing out. The relaxation caused when breathing out is cancelled when breathing in.

If you want to completely end panic attacks, the method in my new book will do that. Yes. We do learn that way. But phobia is not due to learning, but to LACK of learning. Phobias arise when a person does not develop healthy self-regulate of arousal in the first few years of childhood. Good self-regulation depends upon years of good caregiver-regulation of the child's arousal. When the young child is upset, if a caregiver consistently responds in a calm and non-judgmental way, the child internalizes what the caregiver does. Having learned what the caregiver does, the caregiver's soothing becomes self-soothing.

Re: 5 Ways To Maintain Your Flying Fears

This free app helps with turbulence. But, based on my experience, when a child has fear of flying, it is a huge red flag, one that must not be ignored.

Every child attaches to its parents. Depending upon the quality of the parent-child relationship, a the child's attachment to the parents is either secure or insecure.

A securely attached child will simply not fear flying. The reason should be obvious. When a child trusts its parents, if the parents say we are going to fly on a plane, safety does not enter the child's mind. When a child does not trust its parents, the child is unsure whether the parents will keep him or her safe, or even whether they know what they are doing.

This is a serious matter. A child who distrusts its parents cannot develop normal emotional regulation. This means when the child becomes a teenager, emotional regulation can become difficult. When the child experiments with drugs, he or she will find the drugs help him or here regulate anxiety and other forms of distress.

At that point, the child has no interest in anything the parent has to say. The child is lost to the parents. Thus, when this red flag - the child's fear of flying appears - wise parents will seek extensive treatment with an experienced mental health professional, not so much for the flying, but to avoid heartbreak down the road.

Bottom line: if you young child is afraid of flying, get professional help for the parent-child relationship. Compared with the relationship problem (which is easy to ignore) flying is small potatoes.

Re: First with Kids: Overcoming a fear of flying | First With Kids - WPTZ Home

Understandably, we want to help kids get over fear of flying. It does help to keep ones mind occupied, only only so long as the flight is smooth. It is wise to recognize the limits of selective focus. When there is turbulence, the feeling of dropping causes an automatic release of stress hormones. As turbulence continues, and each drop causes a release, stress hormones build up and make selective focus/distraction impossible. If turbulence causes this trouble, the only answer is inhibit the release of stress hormones. A method for doing that is detailed in "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying" which was chose "Amazon Editors' 2014 Favorite Book.

Re: You CAN Travel in Spite of Your Fears of Flying

Thanks for including information about SOAR. I'm very proud to have developed the most advanced treatment for flight phobia. In doing so, noting and understanding the limitations of the pre existing method was a first step. So I would caution readers to have prudent expectations about relaxation, breathing, and distraction as a method for controlling anxiety. These may work if the flight is smooth but when turbulence starts stress hormones are released as a knee-jerk response which these measures cannot prevent. To deal with turbulence the mind needs to be trained to inhibit the release of stress hormones.

Re: 5 Practical Tips to Overcome Fear of Flying.. and More! - Blissful Snapshots - Fun. But breathing exercises, according to one research study after another, are ineffective. If they do anything at all, they are a distraction. But if there is turbulence, any form of distraction stops working. For solid help, sample this book a.co/0n0P5v2

Re: FEAR OF FLYING, 27 July 2016 08:08

Thought Stopping" (rubber band on wrist) and distraction, work only when there is no turbulence.

Why? Because the amygdala - a part of the brain that helps protect you from danger - releases stress hormones automatically (think "knee-jerk response") when it senses falling. The stress hormones grab your attention no matter what you are thinking - or trying not to think.

Since dropping happens again and again in turbulence, stress hormones build up and make it impossible to stay distracted or to keep thoughts of falling out of mind.

As both an airline captain and a licensed therapist, I've worked on this problem for 35 years, and there is no way to control feelings caused by stress hormones other than to inhibit the amygdala so it does not release stress hormones.

The method for inhibiting the amygdala is detailed in "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying" chosen "Amazon Editors' 2014 Favorite Book."

Re: turbulence

Though flight in turbulence is 100% safe (providing you use your seat belt) it feels 100% dangerous. It's all due to how the.mind is wired up. After all, the amygdala- the part of the brain that releases stress hormones- was developed by evolution about 100,000,000 years before the Wright brothers developed the airplane.

When the amygdala senses the feeling of falling it releases stress hormones. One shot of stress hormones is no big deal. But in turbulence, each drop releases stress hormones which build up and cause physical feelings - pounding heart, rapid breathing, sweating, and tension- that are commonly felt when in danger. When turbulence goes on, these feelings intensify and - regardless of logic - it becomes impossible to feel safe.

The answer? Inhibit the amygdala. Stop it from releasing stress hormones. How? It's all laid out in my book, "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying," chosen Amazon Editors' 2014 Favorite Book.

Re: How to calm your fear of flying

Thank you for including information about the free SOAR app. It is available at http://www.fearofflying.com...

But, I have to add a word of caution about breathing exercises. Though they are widely recommended, research has again and again shown them to be of no value. They may serve as a distraction, but when turbulence begins, distraction ends. So, I would warn anyone who plans to depend on breathing exercises to control their anxiety, claustrophobia, or panic that doing so will only set them up for failure to control their feelings if the flight is turbulent.

Far more effective methods are available in my book, "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying" chosen as Amazon Editors' 2014 Favorite Book.

Re: 10 Best Apps for Landing Great Travel Deals

Why? Because, unless you regulate stress naturally and unconsciously in day-to-day living, you have to regulate your feelings/fears by controlling everything, everyone, and being able to bail out if things get too tough.

You need to develop natural, unconscious regulation, because you are not in control on the plane, and you can't get out until it lands.

I have courses have taught almost 10,000 people how to automatically calm themselves when flying. Oxytocin can solve the problem. But, none of the courses you mention teach how. Detailed instructions on how to use oxytocin to control fear of flying - included claustrophobia and panic, even when there is turbulence - is in "SOAR: The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying," chosen Amazon editors' 2014 favorite book.
