it was meant as a compliment for sticking to your belief that quality convo needed to be re-established even though at the time when you decided to do it, you got a lot of heat for it.

you contribute to the community in other ways than paying attention to follower count as we can see from seesmic desktop. that alone is "loving everyone" :D

i actually mentioned this in a tweet a few months ago. i wouldn't mind paying a premium for extra services from Twitter if they were really useful and made the overall experience more efficient and enjoyable.

Dan, I am prone to drama queen tendencies. So drastic is a great way to describe it. LOL.

It's actually pretty cool just hiding the follower count and tweeting as usual. More a statement at this point than really having any effect on the community. But I do wish Twitter allowed that option. We're allowed to limit what we show folks on Facebook. It'd be nice for once if Twitter could let us limit this info to folks too. I'm not protecting my updates. I think the info I share is much better being open to all to drop in to read.

But the problem in the community is the tendency to focus too much on the # of followers. So hiding it is just a nice change.

lol. no bubble burst. as mentioned, it's a total scotch tape job. just wanted it out of plain view. hovering over them or highlighting still shows it, but that's an extra step for anyone who really wants to look.

as for social marketing. social media. it's not antisocial to maintain some level of control over the kind of user experience you would like to have. people with the notion that they have to share, reveal, tweet, follow everything and everyone is fine. but i've realized that those that don't want that kind of experience don't need to feel anti-social for doing so.

it's my 3rd time in 8 months visiting Hawaii. my tips to other visitors in no particular order:

-- catch the earliest flight! even if that means waking up for that 8am flight! it's so worth it because when you land, you've got plenty of daylight in Hawaii and you arrive just in time for lunch!

-- break a 20 dollar bill into singles before you board your flight. when you land, you want to be able to tip the nice taxi driver and hotel staff and don't want to be caught looking like a cheapo after getting great service and convo.

-- don't feel like you have to pack the whole world because you're going to go shopping!

-- bring beach towels. i forget this everytime and end up having to buy them. i must have a collection of beach towels at home in LA because i keep forgetting to back them for my trip.

-- get to know the local community. this is what keeps me coming back to Hawaii. the people i met from speaking at a conference last year are the reason for why i count many great local residents as friends now. every time i visit, i'm shown new places to eat and meet more great people through these friends.

-- get on twitter! get to know people before you arrive by following @HawaiiHTA and all the folks on Hawaii.Alltop.Com ...you'll definitely make the most of your trip this way!

I still have yet to try a malasada from Leonard's but everyone keeps talking about it so I must try that soon!

omg drew, you have a strong soul and awesome outlook in light of a really messed up situation. :(

you're in my thoughts and hell yea, i'm going to #blamedrewscancer the next time i'm on PMS. which is like, everyday.

anything i can do to help you raise awareness, just let me know. you were such a nice person to get stuck on a 16 hour bus ride to vegas with.

i'm going to follow along as you recover and lots of people will be better from your willingness to share the experience.

sorry. i don't believe social media = giving up control of your brand. there are ways to put up a Twitter feed and filter.

yea, it's not transparency. but i think we're all losing a bit of common sense to the social media bubble.

I suppose the cute social media thing to do would be to create a video reply with a song apologizing for his guitar. But that would take up too much time and budget and nicely encourage others to follow with their grievances knowing UA replies to social media rants.

I'd ignore it. The way they have. And focus on raising the overall level of their customer experience. (which they're probably not)

How would you have handled it? What's your version of "surrounding bad vibes with love?"

Most people who care about using Twitter or Facebook in China can access it just fine via VPN.

FYI -- Chinese people don't use Twitter or Facebook and the people who usually whine about it being blocked obviously don't know how to get around it so they whine.

hello yeah relax,

comments are well...comments. wasn't my intention to use this as a forum to discuss a complex issue such as censorship in China but you did a nice job. good for you. hope it got through.

to clarify. this post by Mashable was made possible because someone i knew caught it in my Facebook stream. shared it in theirs, it caught the attention of Ben who then asked person if they could email me and ask about it.

seeing as how i wasn't maggie and wasn't on the ground in Beijing and do not profess expertise in the manner you do in understanding China inside out on censorship issues, i kindly directed him to my friend Kaiser Kuo instead ...who often speaks on this very topic as he has done many times to an audience of westerners who have pre-conceived notions of China.

but wanting to get the story out asap -- even though by the time this story was written it had been a whole day already since event happened and i was hoping an extra half hour to check in and get an insider perspective would be cool -- it was posted anyways.

fyi - thank you for sharing your insights on the internet in China generally improving. i've also observed as much in the 15 years since i've been coming to China.

i don't see what the big deal is. maybe i look at it differently as i'm not an early adopter who comes from the tech sector. i have a retailer/consumer mindset when approaching this stuff because ultimately it doesn't matter what the geek purists say. once things hit mainstream -- as they should -- opinions on this comment board won't matter if there's serious money to be made.

i see ad.ly and other in stream advertising no differently than a commercial inserted into a tv show.

honestly, one tweet a day by someone i'm following is no big deal ...at least for me because i've curated my following list and know the folks enough to not freak out if they're trying to monetize the time they spend sharing info, etc with me.

and what's the difference between something like ad.ly and say ...chris pirillo's tweets. he inserts the equivalent of his own ads and affiliate links in between his tweets. i haven't unfollowed him.

lastly, it's also worth noting that ad.ly lets you donate your revenue to charity. as i asked you earlier, would you unfollow if i allowed offer from brand X with a % of proceeds going to a cause i supported? again. curious.

i'm partial to wanting to see where this goes and therefore giving it a fair shot to evolve before shooting it down with limited knowledge and experience with it beyond a simple sign up.

again, maybe i look at it differently b/c i'm not from silicon valley. hey, spent 5 years in the tv shopping industry. infomercials and suzanne somers selling cubic zirconia on tv may not appeal to most people, but there are folks watching and buying that crap to the tune of billions of dollars a year.

i always appreciate your opinions as someone who sees this stuff launch and evolve, but just because a few early adopter techies think it sucks, it doesn't mean it's not going to work. i think it's too early to slam.
